Koh Dach - a.k.a. Silk Island – is just a short drive from downtown Phnom Penh, but it is also a world away from the city’s hustle and bustle. The breezy island is not only a great place to spend a few hours, it’s also a fun way to learn about Cambodia’s silk weaving history, have a picnic or even go for a dip. And the people who live and work here also smile and wave, a rare but welcome contrast to life in the big city these days. Entry to the island is free but there's a small ferry toll to get you across The Mekong River and a $1 entrance fee if you visit the silk farm. There are little huts and picnic tables lining the river and kiosks everywhere, selling cold drinks and snacks. And of course you can buy all kinds of silk goodies, from colorful skirts to scarves to you name it. Getting there, however, proved to be a bit of a challenge. The GrabApp (which almost everyone uses to book tuk-tuks) would not accept a booking. I tried last week and again this morning but, for whatever reason, you can't use GrabApp to book your ride. As luck would have it, I ran into a fantastic tour guide and rikshaw driver (Mr. Vanna) while I was visiting Wat Ounalom this morning, and he drove me to - and onto the ferry, across the river and around the island for $35, stopping at various points of interest. We had a blast. Note: you can also tour the island by renting a bicycle. The road around the island is about 40km, and passes sleepy villages and pagodas, paddies and farms. As I am not the sporty type, I opted instead for the rikshaw. Up to you! Long story short - you may need to book a private tuk-tuk to get there, but it is definitely worth the trip. Based on my experience today, and assuming you'd like to see all of the island, I would suggest allowing about 2 hours, maybe 3 if you're going to stop somewhere to eat. Like so many places around the world, Silk Island took a major hit during Covid. If you're looking for a fun way to spend a few hours, get some fresh air and do some souvenir shopping, Silk Island should be on your bucket list. The locals who live and work there will appreciate your visit. And finally, a special shout out to my driver and guide, Mr. Vanna, (see photos below) who made the trip so easy and enjoyable!

It was interesting to see how silkworms make silk and how the silk is weaved. However, I really found this place bit of a waste of time. Sadly the high quality silk we are looking for is not on this island and or maybe it is taken off the island. The people were very friendly and hospitable. Except for a few kids that flipped us the bird for no reason. Can't really highly recommend it.

We wanted to visit the Island and tried to find some information online about how to go there. All TukTuk prices changed a lot, so we decided to go by ourselves - and we didn't want that day to play the game you offer this, I offer you this..- From the night market, we took a TukTuk using PassApp until the "Silk Island Ferry" (12.000 Real) and then paid the ferry (500 real per person). After paying, there were some tuktuks offering the silk Island tour, and we negotiated one for 10USD (go to the island, small tour around it, and back to the ferry). In the Silk Farm we had to pay 2USD entry per person (8000Real). A tour guide showed us the process and gave us a small farm tour. It was nice. Then we arrived at the shop of course, the prices for silk scarves are around 70USD (for being on the same farm, expensive) and cotton ones with some Silk for 25/30USD. We didn't buy anything, but we spend some money there (they have a small box to spend money for the women working there). At the end, the tour guide wanted some tip. So the 2USD entry could be more expensive as it is :) Then we went with the TukTuk guy to the school's island. We could see a Pagoda in there and walk a bit around it. Afterwards we visit other Pagoda and then went back to the ferry. He left us there, we paid then again 500 Real per person to cross and then took a TukTuk using PassApp (10000 Real) To conclude, doing it by ourselves was around ~18/19 USD (2people) Days later I went to the Artisans Angkor Shop. Mostly the same silk scarf I saw on the island 20 USD. Make your own conclusions. So you can do it by yourself without booking a tour, or renting a motorcycle. It's a thing you do not need to visit, but it's a nice to see. If you have some extra time in the city, you can do it, if you don't, you do not miss too much.

A perfect day trip from Phnom Penh. It's interesting to see the rural life just few kilometres away from the bustling city. This place is eco friendly, sustainable and provides a better understanding of silk making process. They have ample spaces on the riverbank to chill, drink and dining from the restaurant :) If you are interested you can purchase the silk scarfs that are produced by themselves. The entrance fee is $1 each. The most convenient way reach here is by tuk tuk. We paid $25 for a return trip from PP and a dollar extra for the local ferry ⛴ to cross two of us including the tuk tuk.

Tourist scam without any interesting information ir things to see. Its a small village like any other. They have a school and temples like all others as well. If you have never seen silk worms and how they make silk and weave it then it is ok, but probably you are still better of looking a documentary on youtube. The ferry is 500 KHR per person, the tuktuk on the Island for a roundtrip can be as low as 2 USD. The entry to the community is 2 USD per Person, which is just way to much for what you get!

A very well organised tour. I saw the cultivation and total process of making a silk scarf. Very informative. And got to see the village on the island and interact with the community. I bought 3 silk scarves of different thickness and colours and pattern. They were very well priced. Highly recommend it. If you want a silk scarf for a souvenir or gift, this is the place to go. Men and ladies styles available.

Live experience of silk making in a traditional way! Kids enjoyed a lot & was been very much enthusiastic to learn about the full cycle of silk cloth making & completed by shopping the end product from souvenir shop. Worth for a half day trip as very nearby & convenient from Capital city of Phnom Penh. Entry Fee $2/adult, children below 10y free entry.

The island itself is a great, green getaway from the noise and air pollution of the city and it's a short tuktuk and ferry ride away. If you're walking, the ferry costs only 500riel. The Silk Island official tourist centre is very interesting, especially if you're willing to pay a guide $1 per person, over and above the $1 per person entry fee. We were given a full explanation of the process of silk making from beginning to end by our guide, who was very friendly. Come prepared with enough pocket money if you want to get a real silk Khmer scarf. They cost anywhere from $5 to $45 each. Definitely worth it if you have the dough handy. I was quite disappointed at the animals in tiny cages, like the alligators and the monkeys. There were some huge fish they call Dragon fish, also in a very small pond. I'll definitely go back there, though, even if it's just for a long run in the fresh air and greenery... I've heard there is another silk weaving village that is less touristy. I'll check that one out next time. 😁

Our Touk Touk driver took us to the silkworm farm and we had a wonderful hour and a half there. The guide(sorry forgot his name) showed us the life cycle of the silkworm, we watched the women weaving the beautiful silk fabric and bought several gorgeous scarves. Well worth a visit

The beauty of Silk Island is simply breathtaking. I have been fortunate enough to make annual visits to this paradise for the past eight years. To truly appreciate its splendour, I suggest exploring early in the morning by bike. Additionally, there are numerous spots to pause and indulge in refreshing beverages and delectable cuisine.

Great trip by boat to the island and then by tuk tuk around the island. Lucky to have had good guides. Being low season we were the only tourists on the boat and on the island. Silk production process is fascinating, highly skillful and labour intensive.

Very nice day in Silk Island outside the city chaos, this calm place was a very nice visit to learn about silk and traditional methods of producing fabrics. A comment though I would like to make is in regards to the caged animals including two crocodiles, exotic birds and big fishes, amongst others. It is sad to see animals in cages like that instead in the wild, I hope they understand that animals have feelings and that they deserve freedom ✨

A very short trip away from PP. Love this place for it is quiet. Educational on the silk making process. The greenery to lay back and relax. The prefect place for a day trip. The tour guide is tip based. He speaks English. The first four photos are just in one area. Highly recommend this place for quality family or alone time.

Silk Island is located approximately 10 kms from the heart of the city. The island has silk weaving community who do sericulture, extract silk from the worm. There exists cafeteria and lounge to order and have food at traditional silk community house. The island can be reached via ferry from the pick up point. Charges being 500 Cambodian Riels for one way. If you're from India, then this place may not be of great interest given the extensive silk clothing and industry.

We arrived at this center at about 11 am. There were not many people here at all. The cost is $1 a person to enter or 2500R if you are a local. There is moto parking on the inside to the left. There were not many people making silk either. Lots of places for photos. The few animals are ok. Keep in mind this is Cambodia so everyone needs to stop complaining about the poor condition of the cages etc... There are some big fishes too. The restaurants are towards the back. The workers are not very attentive so you need to work to get their attention. The food prices are decent. Dishes come in small or large. Beers are $1. It's relaxing to sit in the hammocks for a rest after eating.

I was here today (13 May 2023). Good place and the people in the park are friendly. Perfect getaway if you're into a country environment. I only hope they lower the volume or remove the booming loudspeaker. It is drowning the chirps of the birds and other sounds of nature. One more thing, there is a friendly doggo that wanted petting there. If you visit and see it. Give him a pat or a belly rub.

Great place to learn about the silk making process. Same price as the market for silk items but these are made by hand on an old style loom. You can see the workers making items in real time. Spend some money and show support. It's a nice taxi and ferry ride as well. A little slice of suburbs very close to the hustle and bustle of the city.

Was interesting to learn about how silk gets made on the island. Got to see the whole process laid out in front of us from caterpillar to full garments. The women making the garments were kinda fascinating to see. Didn't expect to have to pay our guide at the end however as I'm pretty sure we read it was free for the guide at the start. However, overall it was a nice outing.

The guide who showed me around the island was charming, delightful and very knowledgeable. However, it's really not worth the long drive out there across the bridge to see what they have. If it's part of a tour and you've already made plans, enjoy it but don't go out of your way. There's just a simple demonstration of how silk warms are raised. Killed spun into wool and a relatively expensive small gift shop. Nice but not worth the effort

Caught a boat here from the mainland and was glad our group of 30 did. Was mind blowing to see how silk items are made and makes you appreciate them a whole lot more. I’m sure prices of the ties, kids animal toys and scarves were overpriced but we didn’t mind paying to support the women and community. The nearby pagoda was nice, uncrowded and monks chanting was cool to see. Didn’t love seeing monkeys chained up…

We were approached by a Tuktuk driver and he brought us to a small family owned business. One woman spoke English and explained us the process. Very interesting We did not pay an entrance fee, however we ended up buying some scarfs and one tie. Probably overpriced, but this is one of the once in a lifetime experiences

The Ferry with buffet is good. Relax and you can take a look to the river side. Silk island is normal, but the gold silk is very pretty.

It's very difficult times for the weavers, even more so now because of Covid. My Khmer friend and I are trying to introduce their silk to the international market USA and UK at : silk-store-psah-company.site. Our prices are high but we will be lowering them now in an attempt make more sales. Shipping from Cambodia to US or UK for half KG is $80 alone. If anyone can help with shipping we can lower pricing even more.

We visited the Silk Centre (which is not actually on Silk Island!). Our guide was 'included' with the $1/person entrance fee and TOTALLY WORTH THAT and much more! He was very knowledgable, articulate, passionate about silk weaving. He ably answered all of our questions. After the tour we spent another half hour browing the shop and came away with may gorgeous pieces of silk!

Yesterday, during my recent visit (18 Dec 2023) to Silk Island, I had the pleasure of embarking on an incredibly informative tour, greatly enhanced by our knowledgeable guide. Her expertise and passion for silk-making transformed our experience from a simple visit into an educational journey. I highly recommend paying for the guide as she was very patient and answered a lot of my questions. As we navigated through the serene and cool environment of the island, our guide eloquently explained the intricate process of transforming silk into beautiful scarves and other items available for purchase. Her detailed descriptions and engaging storytelling made it easy to understand and appreciate the craftsmanship involved. The highlight of the tour was witnessing a live demonstration of the silk-making process. From observing the silk worms in their various stages - larva, eggs, and distinguishing between the female and male - it was a fascinating insight into a world I had little knowledge of before. The shaded pathways provided a comfortable atmosphere to stroll and absorb the rich cultural heritage of Silk Island. The hands-on demonstration added a tangible aspect to our learning, making the experience more memorable. I left Silk Island not only with a few exquisite silk products but also with a deeper understanding and appreciation for the skill and tradition behind silk-making. It’s a must-visit for anyone interested in textiles, culture, or just looking for a unique and educational experience.

The island looked pretty and enjoyable on the pictures but what a disappointment when we went to the « Koh Dach Tourism beach site » so much waste everywhere on the sand and in the water. You cannot walk one meter without having dozens of waste on your feet. The beach looks very dirty we didn’t stay long (maybe 5 minutes) So sad to see the beach like that (you have to pay 1$ to get there but it’s poorly maintained) We visited a place where you can learn about silk and traditional methods of producing fabrics. it was very interesting to learn how to make a silk scarf. The guide speaks English very well BUT the major problem are the caged animals : 2 crocodiles, lot of exotic birds (peacocks and toucans). The cage for the crocodiles is very small (barely enough room for the 2 crocodiles), the plan is to do a mini zoo… so sad Maybe we hadn’t see the nice things to do there but regarding what we have done. We wouldn’t recommend it

It is a good place with a fresh environment surrounded, we can enjoy and relax from working and seeing local people produce silk in a traditionally way. The food is also nice with acceptable prices. It is highly recommended if you would like to look forward to seeing places nearby Phnom Penh. Just spend some time on the weekend cross the ferry and enjoy life.

I went there not knowing what to expect. If you are coming from Phnom Penh city, I recommend you bring your own tuk tuk as there aren't many on the island. My tuk tuk driver took me on the barge across the river to the island and drove me to the site where silk is made. My tour guide was a young lady who explained everything to me. You can buy silk scarves and whatnot for US$15+. I highly recommend buying something there because it supports the women who make them. It's an exhausting process making things from scratch. My guide stopped going to school at Grade 7 because she had to help her mum financially. So any purchase and tips will help the people who work there.
