This is not to be confused with market 28 which is where tourists go to get T-shirts and trinkets. This is market 23 where the locals go shopping and eat. It is a walk through market with vegetables, fruits, and meats. there is clothing and jewelry and other household items to shop for as well. There are lots of local small street food areas and mini restaurants. I did not see many tourists here as it is not a typical tourist attraction. You should be aware that there is no air condition any of the buildings and no public restrooms that I could find. However, there is a pay bathroom that you can use for five pesos. They give you about 10 to 12 squares of toilet paper when you pay to get in. You will need to ask directions to be able to find this, so knowing the word banos (bathroom in Spanish)is very helpful. 😄 It was certainly an adventure to tour the Market 23!

Simply the best market in Cancun! It is small, friendly, and prices are fair and service genuine. Mostly locals. Very few tourists. After price comparing across markets, this is the best. Great meals and food. Basically no pressure sales, in fact, most vendors seem shy of tourists. So refreshing, relaxing. We will be back! Viva Mexico!

This is where the locals shop near downtown Cancun. Really interesting place and lots of cheap or decent priced items. Prices are usually in pesos and it’s probably better if you have local currency.

Free parking This place is not big but fun. It is like a produce market lots of vendors selling local stuff such as meat, searfood, fruits. Also have several food vendors. If you want to know how local lives here is the place

If you spending time in Cancun, I HIGHLY recommend you visit this authentic Mexican market. The food is fantastic, and the shops are incredible. Also a great way to get away from the highly inflated Hotel Zone prices. You can buy higher quality gear in Market 23 for a fraction of the price, enjoy some authentic food, drink coconut water from a freshly cracked coconut, and meet many friendly vendors. Also amazing coffee.

A local market where you will find a wide selection of local vegetables and fruits as well as souvenirs from Mexico. And in the middle of the market you will find a local food point with amazing Torta for only 60 pesos. I would highly recommend

I like this place. You can find pretty much everything. I‘ve forgot what the dish‘s name was I had but it was delicious. In the tortilla was either bean or potatoes and above it guacamole and nopal. Must try! And the fruit and veggie variety is great. Of course all kind of stuff for the día de los muertos, like awesome artcraft with sweets for the decoration but also eatable. I had to get it all and great my first altar for these special days.

This is the smaller open air market. Lots of souvenirs, good prices. Try the local cheese store and its salsa.

Even if it is small it has a little bit of everything. Candy stores allow wholesale or retail sale. Daily groceries of course, but also daily goodies and toys for parties and flowerpots are available. Great tortilla shops are there too! Fresh cheese and dry fish are highly recommended. Try to go during weekdays as weekends could get very busy.

Love this market. The most authentic market. Traditional foods, clothing, and prices are modest. A must do for an authentic experience.

Stopped here three times this trip. Food choices are good. This is where the locals shop, but there's plenty of trinkets and souvenirs for tourists.

This is the better of the two main markets (Market 23 and 28). The prices are much more reasonable and far less pressure from vendors. Locals shop here so that buffers things out. Not much negotiation at this market but again the prices are pretty consistent and lower than Market 28.

Best place to buy anything , very local market where local people come to sell their goods. Need some cleaning and maintenance, but is the only place it feels like a real mexico. Very cheap to buy anything. People there only speak Spanish and some Maya but they will do their best to communicate in English. Bring Mexican currency (pesos).

I went there when just half of the shops were open so hard to criticize the whole, however it was small sized outside mall that had not much seducing my eyes. Seemed like it specialized for kids party stuff.

Great place to experience a local market, go in the morning. Loved the local handmade goods, compared to market 28- too many China made products. Best part we didn't get harrassed to buy goods every few minutes.

Very cool local market. Prices easy better than on the other more touristic markets.

  • 5/5 Brian T. 10 months ago on Google
The first thing you notice is this is where the locals shop for meat, fish, vegetables, sweets and other things. The vendors won't harass you as you walk by to come in like they do at Mercado 28 - a refreshing change. You won't find jewlery here because tourists don't come here, so keep that in mind when you visit.

The best and oldest Mercado in Cancun. Don't confuse it with Mercado 28 which is just more tourist junk. You can find the same stuff, usually cheaper at Mercado 23.

I've lived in Cancún for years. This is our "go to" for fresh fruit and vegetables. Finding the foods from the Caribbean (yuca, málaga, ají) is a problem in the supermarkets. When they have something it is lower quality or old and dry. Here everything is fresh. The meat is clean and full of flavor. Anything else you need is here, too, from candy to a wedding dress or quincenera. An American is going to be overwhelmed if they aren't familiar with markets in Latin America. If you don't speak Spanish expect to pay more. The honey we bought today is absolutely delicious. 110 pesos for a liter fresh from the abiery.

Many different meat sellers. One impressive fruit/vegetable seller. I wasn't even looking for veggies. Many different dining options. More tourist-souvenir shops than you will need.

If you’re interested in shopping for souvenirs without being harassed by store owners, this market is for you! Lots of authentic gifts to bring back to your loved ones. Locals shop here. Very little pressure to buy from each little store. Safe atmosphere. Prices are significantly cheaper than Market 28 and the Hotel Zone… save yourself from that nightmare!

This was a nice market. Lots of stalls and souvenirs. Other reviews said they were pushy to sell but I didn't experience that, only a couple were insistent, but they weren't rude. Had lunch at one of the many food places and it was good. Bought a few things and would recommend to go see if on Cancun!

We stopped here because we did not want to go to tourist market 28. Granted we speak Spanish, and didn't look like tourist at the time. This isn't for the faint of heart or complete non Spanish speakers. We saw some tourists but they came and went quickly. Some of the venders and spots can be pushy with you don't speak Spanish, and/or look out of place. Just a fair warning. Otherwise it isn't that bad. I will say the food was amazing, as we got food from a small corner spot. However, everything is cash only and I had swapped to Pesos the day before. The food was incredibly good, incredibly cheap and enjoyable, they were quick to make it and didn't skimp on quantity of meat. Everything was made to order and came decently quick. The tables are shared so you may be asked to sit with a random party due to limited space. We also got chicharrones to eat with guac at the hotel lol it was around $3 usd in pesos for 1/2lb lol Also around the corner from the market we got a coco frio (fresh cut open coconut) for like $2.50 for a decent sized and filled to brim with water. It was amazing.

One of the very few authentic places in Cancun. This is a place where locals shop and is full of vibrant colors. Must try the menu of the day in one of the eateries.

This place is an open market where you can find everything from vegetables to clothes, plus tourist souvenirs. Several places to eat, market style, mainly tacos and traditional Mexican food. The market is very clean. Don't try to haggle the prices given, you may offend the seller.

great meat and veg market. not a tourist spot go to market 28 if you want gifts. wear a face mask if you do to show respect for the locals. location still great for meat and cheese at 4 brothers.

Easy parking, dilapidated market, warm people, genuine Mexico. Worth a visit to absorb the ambience of the less entitled Cancun.

Oldest market in town. There's absolutely everything there! Including some of the best sandwiches in town at a place called "El paisano del 23" also found big pumpkin for my Christmas pies and it was late November. If you want the real downtown experience, this is it not to mention fresh catch of the day as well. 5*.

Traditional market, authentic non touristy experience. We ate a restaurant there and it was one of the best meals we had in Cancun. Don't be scared, everyone was really nice.

Very happy with my visit here( Caveat for those have been to Peru and Columbia farmers market- this is not as colorful, with exotic fruits like those two South American countries). Like the fact that is a place where locals go, and it has a mix of touristy souvenirs, fresh produce and local eateries alike.

We decided jump on the local bus system, and headed over to the market 23 to check it out. It was very easy to find with the use of our Google maps. This market is an outdoor market that has just about everything that you could imagine. We felt like it was just okay, and we kind of felt like it was not really worth our time or pesos. We only ended up buying a couple of cold drinks, sense we didn't really feel comfortable eating any of the local vendor food options. This market did have some souvenirs for the travelers that maybe here on vacation or just visiting the Cancun area.

Stopped at the candy store. All you need to fill an stocking or a piñata. Lots of quality little shops here. Not as pushy as at market 28.

The best prices for the same stuff as in the other areas for tourists - just cheaper! This is the place where locals shop...also, inside of the market there are very affordable restaurants where locals tend to eat as well.
