Incredible stay!!! Such a strong community bond - haven’t had an experience like this in a hostel within Canada ever! Also- photos DONT do this place justice - super clean and well kept! Will come back FOR SURE!

This hostel was incredibly cozy and clean, with everything needed for a comfortable stay. Moreover, the host family and staff were so friendly and helpful I immediately felt at ease. They even sat down with me to pin lots of great hikes/lookout points/restaurants in the area on maps for me. In the evenings we would sit by the fire, watch movies, chat, or listen to other guests play on some of the many musical instruments in the living room. I'm so glad I stayed here while visiting Cape Breton! Made my stay absolutely wonderful!

We were a group of 4 women age 40’s-65 in the area for the Three Peaks Challenge. We stayed for 3 nights, and could not have been happier with our stay. One night is definitely not enough to enjoy everything this hostel has to offer. We chose the 11 bunk room, and loved it. The hostel is spotless, and everything in it makes perfect sense! We made use of the indoor and outdoor kitchen. We met some great people, enjoyed wonderful free live music one night, and were made to feel so at home. Bricin, Patricia, Billie and Cash are the most beautiful family with an amazing vision. Be sure to visit Billie’s gallery, and purchase some of her and Cash’s artwork.

WOW what an awesome place! Great views of the highlands from the bell tower, and great hiking adventures nearby! Bricin, and Patricia are great hosts! They keep the accommodations very clean, and make sure all guests feel comfortable. Epic campfires, and views of the starlit sky at night. Make sure take a visit to the Church's attic for some music, and epic downhill skate history. I except to see you soon on Speakers Corner! - Eric

The most unique stay you'll find! It's not a trip to Nova Scotia without a stay at the highlands hostel. The Lyons family will welcome you as they're own and provide you with unforgettable experiences.

We had an excellent stay at the Highlands Hostel. Bricin and Patricia are excellent hosts. The church is beautiful, the bell tower is a one of a kind hang out spot, the jam room is incredible, and the RV outside is a funky spot to chill. They have tons of games and puzzles to enjoy. If you’re looking for a great place to stay while checking out Cape Breton, I highly recommend Highland Hostel.

Exception service above and beyond! Bricin, Patricia, and then entire crew was so hospitable and helpful. Bricin even helped us connect with a bike mechanic in the area who saved our trip by coming straight to the Hostel and working on our bikes. Highly recommend the place!

Where to start? We stayed only for one night, but this hostel is one you definitely remember! Amazing welcome by the owners, very great atmosphere, the discovery of baby hockey, very well maintained. If you go to Cape North, you have to stay there (and more than one night ^^)

Five star all the way! Great hosts, location and uniqueness! Love the building, very cool! Very clean and quiet after hours. As always, an interesting cross section of travelers and volunteers. Highly recommended for those of us who enjoy hostel living.

My friend and I spent two nights at the hostel and we can only echo what’s already been said. There’s a reason this place has so many 5 stars - incredibly clean, amazing location, homey environment, safe etc. The host family is exceptionally kind and hospitable and their great energy attracts lovely travellers and volunteers of all ages. Bricin planned an entire itinerary for us one day which allowed us to see some truly incredible local gems we otherwise would not have found. We recommend staying two nights to experience it all!

This was quite possibly the best hostel experience of my life. Where to begin? First, amazing location - right off the Cabot Trail, easy access to beaches and parks; and Peter was kind enough to drive me to and from a nearby bicycle rental place. Second, Bricin and Patricia (and kids) are kind and thoughtful hosts, great conversationalists, and fun people to be around. (And party with.) Ditto for the volunteers, Lynn and Courtney. Finally, the hostel itself is awesome - clean beds, full kitchen, and so on. I want to go back!!!!

Had an amazing time out there at the hostel. Really felt welcomed at the place by Bricin and Patricia. The location was fantastic as I could go to all the good spots while being in the center. The place was really clean and well maintained by the whole team including amazing volunteers like Lynn and Courtney! Would definitely visit again some time!!

This hostel was incredible! The hosts were super accommodating and welcoming. We had the private room, which was a great size for the 3 of us (could have fit 4), with a private bathroom. The hostel itself is super unique with a very cool vibe. I would definitely come back to this place and stay for longer :)

You absolutely need to stay here. This is the best hostel on the planet. Whether you're looking for family-friendly or vagabond skater vibe, the family running this place puts their soul into making it the best experience in so many ways. Being an old church, I was surprised to find it's also THE CLEANEST hostel I had ever been to. I will be coming back no doubt, and I know now why so many do.

Incredible and unique experience! We stayed in the private room - happy to have somewhere quiet to unwind after a long few days hiking, and we were thrilled to be able to mingle with the other guests! We built a fire and enjoyed some great conversations throughout the evening. The bell tower is a great plus. Lots of unexpected gems to explore throughout the property. Highly recommend!

What a comfy, welcoming stay, and a great Canadian hospitality and hostel setting that Bricin and Patricia and their kids have created. These are great peoples. I only stayed a night as a solo traveller, and right when I walked in was greeted by four happy folks and immediately felt welcomed. They helped me order food at a local resturant and had hidden gem hikes pinned on my map! Wanted to share these two just to show how they go above and beyond to make the stay comfortable. For anyone traveling solo or with friends this is the only place you should stay when traveling the Cabot Trail, even if you've never stayed at a hotel before this would be a great experience!

Probably the most charming and home-like hostel I have ever stayed in. You can feel the welcoming atmosphere as soon as you walk in. Everything was spotless, well organized and comfortable. My favourite part was just sitting in the common space spending time with the hosts, they are all lovely and exuberant people. 10/10 would definitely recommend and stay again. Patricia, Bricin, Billie and Cash, you guys really have created a special home, and thank you for sharing it with all of us!

Brilliant place to stay. A really quirky building with a clock tower where you can view the surrounds. Super clean and very comfortable. Bricin, Patricia, Billie and Cash were really welcoming and very knowledgeable on the area. Billie and Cash are amazing children and Yum yum (the cat) was beautiful, albeit a little standoffish! It really was a marvellous place to stay, I would thoroughly recommend it and would love to visit again

Stayed here two nights with my wife in the 11 people dormitory. The dorm is really nice and clean with reading light and an outlet. There were two washrooms to use which was great. The rest of the hostel was pretty awesome too with a kitchen to cook food and lots of places to hang out in the front yard and inside like the clock tower. Bricin and Patricia were really welcoming and gave tips on places to see. You can easily stay in this place for a long time!

Very cute and cozy hostel in an old church building which added a nice touch of character. The host family was very welcoming and fun to hang out with. The beds were comfy and clean, bathrooms spacious with all the essentials you need (towel, soap) and access to the kitchen. Would definitely stay here again!

Had a fantastic stay here back in the summer. Bryson's and Patricia's warm hospitality starts well-before you even arrive. When I told Patricia we were hoping to explore the area in the morning before check-in she sent back a super helpful email full of tips and suggestions. When we walked in the door Bryson immediately loaded up my phone's map with local sites that we used throughout our visit and I know I'll be looking at each time I'm in the area. Evening hospitality was top-notch good times.... cozy bonfire with great tunes, fun games and lots of laughs. Can't wait for the next stay!

I based our trip to Cape Breton on the staying here because it looked so cool! I called Patricia to ask about availability and suitability for our family of two adults and one 9-year-old over Thanksgiving. We stayed for two nights but wished for longer. We did all of the suggested hikes which are off the beaten path and amazing, they aren’t on any maps! Campfires, tunes and karaoke, great company! The people that stay here know they have lucked out. We will be back!

I Stayed with my partner in the private room and we had a phenomenal time. Firstly the layout of the hostel is one of the coolest I’ve ever seen, which includes an amazing view from the church bell tower. Secondly the host family was extremely welcoming and knowledgeable about the community as well as recommending the best hikes and activities. We were able to have the best of both worlds from early, peaceful nights to late night partying, karaoke, and drinks at the campfire. I would 100% return to the hostel.

Don’t even think about staying anywhere else when you come to Cape Breton, this is where you want to be. I would say it’s worth a trip to Cape Breton just to stay here. Absolutely phenomenal place. The owners are just the sweetest coolest people and the building is super cool. Whether you’re looking for a quiet nature getaway or to sing some karaoke: there’s such an amazing atmosphere here that and you’re nearly guaranteed to have the experience you want and to meet some very kind and interesting people. Thank you for a great stay and a memorable birthday.
