Den Anker is a beautiful place with a great vibe near the Clock Tower and has an excellent view of the Harbour, unfortunately that is all it has to offer. The service was nothing to write home about, unfortunately the waffles and not that great either as they are quite hard and the worst part is the ice cream is served on the side with the cream being put on top, you have no choice of sauces but the plain syrup they give you. Then as far as cleanliness goes I would never go back again as I went to the bathroom and one of the kitchen staff was the urinal with his apron still on, when I mentioned this to the manager he had nothing much to say or apologize for, so I would not be going back to Den Anker again.

We went there for brunch. They had a nice breakfast special before 11. Egg Benedict with a mimosa for R100 or waffle with bacon and a mimosa for R100. The eggs Benedict was delicious and I had the creme Burlee for dessert and it was amazing. The used vanilla bean which makes the taste so much better. My friend had the burger which was yummy and the salmon was done to perfection. The mash was nice a creamy and smooth, The waffles were good and the chocolate mousse. The pear brownie dessert was average. I really think they need more umbrellas because the sun got way too much

Den Anker has a great variety of beer, paired with some great tapas makes for a great outing. Highly recommend the mussels (they also have bottomless mussels on Mondays). Great value for money and frequent specials on offering (check out their FB page for amazing specials). Friendly and efficient staff! Shout out to the kitchen which manages to get the food out fast even when the restaurant is at full capacity!

Post whisky tasting dinner this evening. Our second visit to Den Anker. The restaurant was quite full so we sat at the bar for a few minutes before being shown to our table outside on a beautiful Cape Town evening. I ordered cheese croquettes whilst at the bar... very delicious. For mains I had the sirloin. It's served with fries (alot of them) and a salad. The steak was cooked to perfection, and had a nice crispy char which I love. I did have to add a touch of salt to it though. My wife had the mussels, which are plentiful and super delicious. They have lots of specials, like 2 glasses of Jordan Sauv Blanc for R75 which she ordered. Despite being full the service was really good.

I had an awesome fish & chips, and two really good beers from the great selection available. Both the location, and atmosphere of this restaurant, was fabulous. The service here was very efficient, and super professional . . .

I had excellent fish and chips at Den Anker tonight. The salad was fresh and the fish cooked to perfection. The food arrived quickly and service was efficient. The views from the surrounding V&A waterfront are beautiful too.

Popular place on the pier with an outdoor patio as well as indoor dining with a nice wooden interior. Very simple and elegant menu. There is a bar in the middle of the inside restaurant which allows for just hanging out and having a drink at the bar.

This restaurant left me completely amazed by the entire experience. From the amazing service, to the mouth watering food that took me a while to grasp how affordable it was, to lastly the breath taking view. I would 100% recommend this restaurant. The only thing that I had a problem with was the mussels would have been amazing with some bread to soak up the sauce. Other than that, the food blew me away with the amazing quality and portion sizes. I had the salmon terrine starter and for my main I had the mussel starter portion. At first I doubted going for the starter mussels instead of the main but was glad about the choice when it arrived. I still cannot believe how big the portion of mussels was and for just over R100. A big recommendation would be to order the bitterballen, we had to order two portions because of how good they were (so good I forgot to take a photo of them) and the cheese croquettes which were incredibly crisp on the outside but so soft and packed with cheese on the inside. I will definitely be going back again.

Had a 5 star experience at Den Anker. We started off with cheese croquettes, tempura prawns and bitterballen. The bitterballen is a bit of acquired taste. For the main, we enjoyed a glass of white wine with fish and a glass of red wine with sirloin steak and a side of fritters. We also enjoyed mussels steamed in beer, parsley and garlic butter. The mixed berry beer is easy to drink and perfect for the summer.

We love going here. Great atmosphere, and amazing beer. The Wagyu burgers are on point, as well as the Val Au Vent. The beetroot with salmon patee starter is also a must have!!!

This was my first time at this restaurant. The mussels were fresh but most still had the beard in them, it needed to be cleaned before preparation, so it wasn't as good as I expected due to those hairy bits that stuck in my teeth. Unpleasant. The chateaubriand was excellent, well prepared & delicious! The tiger prawns main is a small portion yet steeply priced. If you're hungry, rather opt for something else from the menu. The service was good & the setting is beautiful, quite romantic.

Probably some of the best food we’ve had on our trip! The den anklet steak was great, the gnocchi had tons of flavor and the vol au vent was amazing. We are definitely going to be coming back!

As a Belgian, I'm quite ashamed of knowing this place. I was literally feeling invisible, waiting for someone to take my order. I left after a moment, nobody cared... I'm sorry to say it was my worst experience in Cape Town.

I thought I would try out Den Anker for the first time and boy, was I disappointed. The waitress showed us to our table and we sat down at approximately 17:23. Normally the waiters would hand you the menus and give you about a minute or two to order drinks but this did not happen. At 17:33 - 10 MINUTES LATER - we were still not helped and we decided to leave and no one even approached us. While I find that the customer service during this global pandemic has generally deteriorated at most restaurants, this was by far my worst experience at a restaurant.

My son recommended the fish and chips at Den Anker, insisting it's the best ever. We were not disappointed. Light and crispy, not oily at all. We don't drink alcohol but I believe the beer tasting is an experience. This is not a cheap Fish and Chips but well worth it. We had the rock shandy - so refreshing. Great friendly service. Our food was served very quickly as well. We sat outside and enjoyed the beautiful views of Table Mountain and Lion's Head.

I had the pork belly with green beans and mash. It was done to perfection. I enjoyed the beer tasting tray. The beer selection is fantastic and what you would pay all over. The meals aren't the best priced but I believe for the Waterfront it's well priced.

One of the best view on Table Mountain from the Waterfront. This restaurant is perfect for a lunch on the terrace or on an aperitivo. They have great bread and very good vegetarian options.

Stunning location. If it's warm, make sure you get an outside seat. You might get a a visit from a seagull. We enjoyed small meals and shared the mussel pot, steak tartare which were excellent but possibly the freshest and most delicious starter has to be their prawn tempura.

We were in Cape Town and visited our favorite place at the V&A Waterfront - Den Anker. We arrived at around 6:30 the day we arrived and had forgotten about the sun only going down at about 8pm in Cape Town. We were seated outside and were cooked to a crisp as we were seated in full sun. That aside, our food was outstanding and the views even better. We had seagulls for company which was amazing and we watched the sun go down. We had the fish and chips and mussels. All amazing! Can’t wait to be back in March to visit Den Anker again.

Our food was not good and our server was a bit rude. He only became nice at the end when we were going to pay ( wanted a decent tip , I assume). I had mussels, they were cooked in beer, but had no flavor at all and a bucket of mostly empty shells.

My friend and I went for a lovely early dinner at Den Anker and they did not disappoint. We decided to get the cherry beer which was delicious and selected the specials menu. The food was amazing and the the price you pay (especially in the Waterfront) is well worth it. The service was friendly and attentive and the views from the restaurant are amazing. Would definitely bring my Dad here for the beer. Great👌🏻

A really beautiful restaurant at The Waterfront in an ideal position for lovely views of table mountain. The food was delicious and service was great. We were a very large group and the charge was surprisingly cheap so really great value as well.

Lovely food and attentive service. We had just arrived in Cape Town on Tuesday night and fancied a meal in a relaxed atmosphere. We first headed to another restaurant but looking across the harbour at Den Anker it looked far more active so decided to give it a try. The food is hybrid-French style, with moules, fish soup, chateaubriand. We ordered the chateaubriand and fish soup. Steaks were perfect (although a little too much sauce for my taste - a little side-pot of sauce would have been better), and I loved the fish soup which was packed with flavour. We enjoyed ourselves so much we were the last to leave and the restaurant happily left us alone. I’d thoroughly recommend.

Nice place, good service, bad food. ordered a tuna medium rare, got it well done with the flexibility of a shoe sole. gnocchi were tasteless, salad not even salted. I remember the restaurant from 7 years ago, seems it went down the drain. sorry for it.

I thought this would be a touristy food place, but I was very impressed with the quality of food and drinks. The grilled shrimp in the garlic butter sauce was straight up amazing. They have an excellent selection of Belgian beers, including my favorite Belgian triples, and a lot of other choices. I will definitely come back here.

Great atmosphere and setting. Even though Table Mountain was covered in cloud, what a beautiful setting. We did not have a reservation but reception accommodated us. Thanks! Service was excellent 👌. The mussels were absolutely devine. 💯 Thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Will be back.

Stunning view of harbor and mountains. The food was amazing and the service was great. Definitely warrents another visit next time I am in CT. The pea and tender broccoli stem risotto was fantastic, perfectly cooked through and flavourful.

The restaurant is beautiful and the view even more. We had a starter with steak and a main with Kudu. Both were a bit over cooked. Tasty, but over cooked. The mussles were very close to not fully cooked. Everything else was great. Dessert was more than worth it!

I'm so tired of restaurants not catering for vegetarians. It feels like we're being punished for loving animals and not wanting to eat meat. It's 2021, and I think change is long overdue. I went to Den Anker for dinner last night and there was one, only one vegetarian main meal on the menu! When I spoke to the waiter about it she did inform me that there is another option available, off menu, but I had to complain first to get that info. The starters and sides are also mostly meat. It's just not good enough. The chips and cheese croquettes I ended up ordering was good, service was good, view beautiful. If there were more good veggie options it would've been a 5 star review. But, seriously, ONE option on the menu? Beyond ridiculous.

Inside is sober. Staff very friendly and helpful. Bitterballen not what I expected, not the Dutch taste, not a nice crispy crust and not served piping hot as it should be.

  • 2/5 Heidi N. 3 years ago on Google
I ordered a cocktail off of their menu, and instead of them telling me they did not have that cocktail anymore, they just made a different one and expected me to drink it, and it was completely different to what I ordered. Then my main meal arrived, the Butternut, chickpea and sweet potato curry. However, there were no chickpeas at all. Not one. And there was no flavour at all, I had to ask for salt twice. The only good thing about this experience is that the manager was helpful and got the curry remade with chickpeas for me. Another problem that happened was when we received the bill and they had added a meal to the bill we had not even ordered at all. Disappointing food experience.

So, I tried the Den Anker ‘Date Night’ special recently, and it is a really good value for money deal – not surprising since Den Anker is known for their quality offers and seafood. I enjoyed great mussels, chips, and authentic Belgian food. It is always a pleasure to return there and savour a meal. They maintain a stellar standard of service, food, and the entire dining experience from booking to bill – this rings true even after spending nearly a year away from the restaurant due to work commitments. You need to check out their little outside garden if you pop in for a bite! It is so cute, and lovely to sit back in, and you have one of the best views of the city from Den Anker too. This is definitely a favourite of mine within the Waterfront.

Just beautiful spot looking up to the mountain over the little post quay side. Then the Belgian food and beers, to die for. Exceptionally reasonable price wise and super service. Thank you. You guys deserve Good luck in these tough times.

Great selection of Belgian (including Abbey) beers. I think their bistro style food is better than their restaurant food. We usually end up rather sharing a selection of some of their smaller plates, rather than going for the full dinner. Think that's where Den Anker stands out. Try their bitterballen, cheese croquettes, steak and Bearnaise sauce or tempura prawns. I've also had their steak, but there are many better steak houses. If you want to try something different and really good, try the rabbit stew!

Very nice food in a wonderfull location. If you like belgian food this is the place. If you haven't tried it, this could be a good beginning. Starting with a goat cheese, figs and ham pastry can be an option. We had them mussels and finally the "Dame blanche" (vanilla ice cream with chocolate fudge and whipped cream). Everything was excellent, great attention and they took care of the details. I'll repeat for sure!

Wow! Blown away by my experience here. I had the strawberry waffles special. R100 for two including honey and cream and ice cream. A real deal. The view is fantastic, I watched the Cape Fur Seals playing in the harbor, and the luxury boats coming in and out. Try out the beers at lunch time as well, they've got some amazing specialities. These are my photographs from my morning with them. Yum.🍓🧇🍯
