This beautiful, quaint Cafe is a perfect gem of an eatery located in the city bowl on Waterkant Street. A true bistro in every sense of the word, Hemelhuijs embodies elegance and tranquility. The café has indoor and outdoor dining; because it's located on a small, quiet street, outdoor dining is a pleasure. Indoors, the decor is a mixture of classic and modern and the atmosphere is buzzy. The food is delicious. They have a simple menu with just enough options, but the flavors and combinations used are delightful. They serve a Vietnamese coffee - with condense milk - which is one of the best coffees I have had in a while. The service is excellent, we had a wonderful server who was very attentive to detail and personable. I will definitely be back!

I tried their version of eggs benedict, deliciously laid on a soft brioche bun. Full of flavour. The interior is simple and cool, makes a very good relaxed and interesting ambience. I look forward to try lunch options too.

Great Coffee and Tea! It has an great service and a nice outside area. Nevertheless the street its located at is not really charming, but they are making the best out of it.

The food is average but the waiting times are VERY LONG for strangely small portions. Waiting staff are so rude and arrogant. People who order the same thing but arrived after you get food first? Not a good experience. Highly disappointed.

This is a 'haven' where you can treat all your senses! They are specialists at great coffee and well prepared, tasty dishes. All served efficiently in a very relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

Lovely restaurant with beautiful decor and excellent beverages. The food we ordered was a bit bland and not well-seasoned, unfortunately, and the service was surprisingly slow. We were the only people there initially and breakfast took well over an hour. The menu is also kind of confusing, and our server wasn't particularly helpful.

Wow - friends had been recommending this place for some time. I had a.combo of breakfast and lunch and it was fantastic. Vietnamese coffee was perfect and the bockwurstndish was perfect. I really enjoyed the toast, cream and jam on the side. A+++++

Small portions. Exceptionally long waiting times. Exceptionally RACIST & RUDE waiting staff. Can’t recommend. Has a cool ceiling but not even the average tasting food makes up for being treated like it’s 1950.

Great breakfast place. Service was good. Food tasted fantastic. Especially the Crepes is worth trying: one of the best Crepes Suzette we ever had.

I was going to give 4 stars b/c the wait for the food is quite long, but when the food arrived it was impossible not to give 5 stars!! It is that good. And to their credit they did warn of a 30 min wait for the food. Everything here is top shelf and made with love and care. That shows in everything from the decor to the drinks. And right down to the side of fries and even the house bread - all was really really good. So is it worth the wait? You betcha. And then some.

We have had breakfast at this place several times and everything was delicious. Cozy interior, polite and professional service, many pleasant little things in the design. The food is delicious, some dishes are original, like the specialty coffee. The restaurant is located in the center, but on a quiet street that looks very European. Great place for a long and leisurely breakfast. Maybe for lunch or dinner, we just haven't tried it.

Attentive staff. Drinks were served quickly with a good selection available. The tongue was beautifully cooked but could do with bread or crostini served with. The only disappointment was unfortunately the mosbolletjie… The bread we received was definitely not but rather a yeast leavened brioche of sorts. Apart from this overall a good treat!

A Cape town institution that still has an exceptional standard. We live the bruch menu and cocktails. Decor and service on point. They also have a few South African inspired dishes.

We were lucky enough to have Sunday brunch in this beautiful artistic place. You need to make a reservation before you go. The food is great. What made the food experience here unique is serving simple dishes yet very high quality ingredients. I recommend “home made potato rosti” it is a very light and yummy dish. Don’t leave without trying “toasted mosbolletjie” with cream and apricot jam! It is one of a kind. The signature drink here is “vietnamese coffee”. It has the right amount of condensed milk if you need a little sweetness in your life 🎼😉. The service is as perfect as everything else in this beautiful place.

Wonderful lunch spot. The food is amazing. It’s a small restaurant, so it gets really full during lunch hours and the waiting time is too long. But the meals are fresh and light and original. I will definitely go there again.

Wow, wow, wow! You can taste the love in the food! Amazing options, flavours and presentation. The pineapple combo juice was so refreshing too. Excellent service from Philicitine and team, from the moment we stepped in until we left. What a wonderful find, we will be back!

It's a hidden gem... my 1st impression when I walked, was this is fancy as the tables are neatly set up with glasses, knives, fork and beautiful proteas as a center piece. The decor and style gives an impression of a lavish feel, with lavish food prices... which not the case, it is a bit pricier than most places but its worth it. My friends and I just walked in and there were a few reserved seats, thinking we will need to sit outside, which wasn't something we wanted. However, the manager or I think she was be the hostess, just removed the reserved sign to accommodate us. Which was really great. I felt a bit under dressed with sneakers and a cap, as we had just come from a 6km walk. Seeing people dressed up that early, was quiet something but not once did I feel like I didn't belong there, just because of how I was dressed. I was fascinated by the decor and the ceiling flowers. Floatimf shelves and some porcelain piece against the wall. So beautiful... We were served with friendliness and a very attentive waitress... I was super impressed with my food. I don't usually go for artichokes but it was delicious. My poached eggs were perfect but what top it for me was their mosbolletjie toast. I had to order another slice it was so good.. my friends also enjoyed their food, we were even impressed with the design of one of the plates. 1 critic... the restaurant is quite small and there was a moment I felt uncomfortable because I think there were too many waiters for such a small place. When they not attending to the tables, they all gather in the corner, like sardines in a tin, just watching all the patrons. It was funny but it felt weird even though I know they just keeping an eye out for wehe they are needed but it felt like i was stared at.. It is definitely a place I will recommend and also will return for maybe lunch next time

My Birthday on Monday 16th October 2023 was our last day in beautiful Cape Town and we found this absolute gem of a place to have my Birthday Breakfast. Just wish we had discovered earlier :) Superb food with great staff who were all very welcoming and friendly. Highly recommended - you will not be disappointed!

Quaint establishment with beautiful interiors. Hemelhuijs has some splendid menu options. The starter veg wrap is quite memorable as well as their prawn dumplings. Restrooms are located in another area close to the car park. The experience was dampened with the service staff that get very impatient close to closing time which is 4pm.

Gorgeous little place tucked away in a side street in town. Small and cosy with friendly staff. Perfect for brunch.

The most beautiful restaurant with the tastiest food. The decor changes every few months and every time I eat there, I'm astonished by the attention to detail and craftsmanship. The staff are always very professional and the food is delicious. I also HIGHLY recommend this as a fabulous place to take friends/family visiting from overseas as they strike the perfect balance between having some tongue-in-cheek local cuisine (ie. their iconic "mosbolletjies") and non-touristy sophistication. By far my favourite city spot for a predictably excellent lunch to be inspired by an unpredictable new wall colour or ceiling installation.

Been returning for breakfast here since it opened. It’s the best breakfast in the Western Cape :) I usually get the Eggs Benedict with avo and bacon. The bread it comes on is delicious.

Horrible food. Friendly female waitress. Small menu but trout was sold out. Ordered grilled cauliflower. It was cold and drenched in olive oil. Next was veal. It came in thin slices, way overcooked, tough, oily and sour. Grilled chicken was super dry and tough. Left all on the table. Manager nor chef didn't bother to come to the table. The friendly waitress apologized instead and forfeit payment. Left a tip for the service. Absolutely do not understand the positive reviews of this place.

Our table of 7 all loved the breakfast options we had and we also shared the mosbolletjies, mieliepap and strawberries and yoghurt. Divine food, small and intimate environment and very friendly waiters. The mieliepap (tasteewheat) was a highlight. Definitely worth a visit!

I'm not sure where to begin on how scintillating and mouth watering their food is. Especially the eggs Benedict. I have been having it since they have opened the restaurant. I have never eaten anything else, no matter what time of the day (I have sampled dishes from others). The service is ridiculously good every single time and the owner and staff always remember me and my standard Eggs Benedict order order!

Gorgeous and chic place for brunch! I came here for a quick bite when I visited Cape Town and it was absolutely wonderful. Also, for the price, I was taken back because of the amazing service and quality of the food (comparing to North America, it would cost me an arm and a leg to dine in such a fancy place), I paid with tips 36CAD for an entree, a cocktail and a main course! Will definitely come visit again next time I'm in town!
