Maybe it's because we arrived at 8:45. Near the closing time (in fact, our friends have ordered us in advance) the waiter's attitude is very poor and there is no service at all. We have ramen. The noodles are not elastic and the soup is salty. It can be said that it is not worth the price at all. The conclusion is that the cost is expensive, the service attitude is poor, and the decoration is average!

The smattering of Japanese paraphernalia doesn't necessarily scream "This is a Japanese restaurant!" But the authentic Japanese flavours certainly do. (And, besides, nothing cures the lingering remnants of last night's hangover quite as effectively as a large bowl of quality Ramen.) The sushi portions leaving the kitchen were lush, and we will certainly make our way to Obi to sample the other offerings.

Still one of my favourite ramen places in Cape Town. You cannot go wrong visiting Obi. The ramen is always consistent and delicious. The sushi, especially the nigiri is served in generous and super fresh portions. I’ve been to most of Papa San’s restaurants and cannot fault the food or experience.

The sushi is better than any I’ve had before. I think this is authentic Japanese-style sushi because it’s very different than what you usually get. Great quality ingredients and a variety of raw fish. It seems expensive when you look at the menu but the portions are decent and it’s definitely worth it.

Obi is my favourite Japanese restaurant in Cape Town. There are other great sushi places in CT , but Obi has a freshness difficult to find anywhere else. The location is also the closest to a restaurant in Tokyo, very minimal, just great food.

Good Japanese restaurant with a large selection of Sushi dishes, especially Inside Out Rolls. Prices are reasonable. The restaurant is minimalistic and very clean. Staff are friendly and efficient.

Hi there, Id like to point out that the staff was really friendly and fast. But i dont get the hype either. As said before the Sushi is good but not great. Especially the Salmon tempura was very disappointing. It Tasted nothing like we are used to From other places. Maybe er were just there in the wrong evening. The vegetable Inside out was great! The prawn Inside out had very little protein and lots of Rice. The Taste was okay. I expected a little more for the price and the Ratings. BR Matthias

First visit to Obi, after hearing so much about it and its proprietor (Papa-San). We ordered the set menu and a nice bottle of white wine. Warm sake with desert. We arrived after 8pm on a weekend but well before closing time and ordered promptly. Unfortunately, we had the feeling that service was rushed and that we were being forced out the door. Not particularly pleasant, as noted by other reviews. The only time the waitress showed any warmth was when she saw her tip. Fortunately, the food was fantastic and portions generous. In particular, the sushi (boat!) was fantastic and definitely worth the visit. Desert was yum and paired nicely with warm sake. Recommended for the food. Come EARLY.

Very high quality Japanese they serve. Good circumstance in the restaurant makes you heal. Especially Tenpura and sushi menu are the high quality than them eating in Japan. Japanese owner will be welcome you warm hospitality

Went there for dinner on 14 January 2023. Called them at 6h45pm to make sure that they're not fully booked if we were to pitch up. The lady on the phone advised me that they are fully booked and I could perhaps provide my details to be placed on the waiting list as there was already one table on the waiting list. This was fine as I was aware that they might be busy. I told her I'll call at 7h30 pm to find out whether a table might have opened up and she assured me that all is in order. I called at 7h12pm to ask again whether a table might have opened up because according to their website they close at 8pm. I was informed that the kitchen closes at 9pm and if I were to be there "now" I can be seated. We were 15 minutes away and I told her I'll see her in 10 minutes. She was very polite and understanding. We were a table of 4. When we got there there were 4 tables available and we got seated. At first it seemed that it was unnecessary for her to have told me that they are full seeing as there were 4 tables available of which 2 could easily sit 6 people, however after a few minutes (like 30/45 minutes) in those tables were indeed taken. The section of the restaurant was indeed full and busy. We sat down and our waitress was friendly, helpful, interactive and made us feel at ease. The service was great as our drinks arrived swiftly. After we provided our food order the food came swiftly as well. The service was amazing. The food was enjoyable and worth it (I had the standard shushi). We were stuffed. The plum Sake is a must. Papa San makes excellent sushi.

My husband and I went to Obi date night as I was feeling for sushi. The atmosphere and decor is really nice and cozy and the place is spacious. The food was really good. We were served complimentary fried tuna balls with a really tasty mayo and we ha. Miso for started which was nice and salty. For mains we had the dragon rolls and Obi salmon which we really enjoyed. The fish was very fresh and if you like avo you will enjoy the dragon rolls. We also tried dessert and it had the best matcha ice cream we’ve ever had. Our downside was that the seaweed in the sushi was a little chewy and left you with a stringy piece in your mouth once all the sushi was gone. There is only one dessert item on the menu so don’t bank on a selection although the one item is very nice. The sushi comes in plates of 8 pieces, we usually prefer smaller portions so we can try more. Overall we had a lovely evening. Service was good and the place is an area of Long Street that isn’t too busy so we got a parking spot close by.

Tried Obi out for the first time this evening. What a great experience. Ordered the Salmon Tempura & Ninja Rolls - it was incredible! So good in fact that I ordered a second round. Will definitely be back very soon !!

Great service, and perfectly safe to visit during COVID19. Menus are online and no physical contact is made other than the food. Would definitely be going back for the amazing Ramen.

Always greeted with a smile, even if it's behind a mask. 100% up to hygiene standards and the meal was delicious as usual. Thanks to the wonderful staff for a great meal and dinning out experience even during this crazy pandemic, it has not been easy on the restaurant industry.

We only came here for a quick bite (sushi). I prefer my sushi rice a bit stickier and bit sweeter, bit still enjoyed it. Service is quick and friendly.

I felt like a new person coming out if the restaurant. The food is so homey and the chef is super friendly as well as the staff. I'm super excited to find a Japanese restaurant that has amazing foods!

Been coming here for several years when visiting Cape Town, as much as 3-4x a week for months at a time. Love Papa San and his energy. This was my first time back since 2019 and the food quality has definitely diminished. I ordered a Rainbow Roll and Kamikaze roll. There was practically no fish in either roll as they stuffed it with more vegetables. I decided to give some honest feedback to the waitress who knew me from all the previous times I’ve eaten here and supported this restaurant and she said she’d relay it to the chef - however they made zero attempts to make it right or comment further This is the last time I will eat here.

Great sushi. Great service. Yes a little loud due to limited sound absorption surfaces, but worth it for the first two

  • 5/5 Yen 2 years ago on Google
Beware! Huge portions! And great value! Food was very fresh and consistent. Salmon sashimi melted like butter. Great service. The venue may need a bit of acoustic engineering as the sound reverberates everywhere and can get fatiguing.

Very vibey. A bit noisy when full. The owner is super friendly. Food was unbelievably fast - not sure how they do it! Fish quality is amazing as is the finished sushi product. Thoroughly enjoyed. Waitress wasn't particularly knowledgeable or very efficient and left us half way through and we ended up with another lady who seemed to take us over (without any communication. Not sure if this is normal but it was a bit weird). I really enjoyed the coconut Panna cotta with match green tea ice cream. So light, refreshing and strangely tasty!

I tried their sushi and can say it's very good! Their pieces are quite big as well and they are generous with their salmon! I'm usually not a fan of maki but tried their daikon maki and it was delicious!! I would say they are on the pricey side though... however they do have some lunch specials.

  • 3/5 Stu S. 1 year ago on Google
Honestly, I don’t see what the hype is about. It was a push to give this place 3 stars. The sushi cuts are thin, it’s all rice. Hand rolls are pure rice with little protein, no avo, oddly shaped. It’s expensive compared to other restaurants of this quality in this price bracket.

Had an absolutely brilliant first experience here. The waitress was incredibly friendly and helpful, the atmosphere was relaxed and the food was outstanding. The Udon broth was delicious, the sushi was lovingly prepared and the vegetable tempura was excellent. If you love Japanese food (or Asian food in general) Obi must be on your list in Cape Town.

Fantastic. Plum sake pairs well with Nigiri.

  • 5/5 Brandon W. 3 years ago on Google
The best sushi in Cape Town bar none. This is my personal choice for exceptional quality sushi at a very good price. The presentation of the sushi, the taste, the size of the sushi, the quality is of the highest order and is world class. Expect to pay from $18 per person for a great experience.

  • 3/5 Michelle Anne K. 3 years ago on Google
The only Bento box experience I could find in cpt and it was so average..I was so disappointed. The miso soup is great but that's it. The best sushi place for me is still active sushi in Bree. Sorry guys. It just wasn't there for me.

  • 5/5 Michele M. 3 years ago on Google
Great service, unique sushi - definitely a nice break from your usual sushi spot if you're looking for a but more of an upmarket but not pretentious setting.

  • 5/5 Alastair M. 3 years ago on Google
So good. I'm one of those people who does not like average tuna, good tuna is amazing, average tuna is not worth the money. If you love sushi, this place servers amazing tuna and salmon. The set menu for two really covered arrange if tastes, from miso soup, veg tempura, sushi and ice cream, perfect for a date night

Average quality sushi, place smells like fish oil and it’s quite hot and stuffy inside with no central cooling. No fashion sandwiches, they serve uncut makis as hand rolls and they always give you the corners of the rolls with the sushi.

Ordered the kaiseki menu, which is perfect for 2 to share(great date night option). Sushi is genuinely authentic: fresh tuna, sea brim, nigiri actually covers it's rice bed. Highlight was easily the matcha ice- cream and coconut panacotta, and we added the shogun roll to our mains which is the best tasting thing I've had in months. Definitely going again.
