I give them a 2 star rating, because they claim they are a 4 star hotel and it's R4000 per night. I think you literally pay for the location close to the Waterfront. In any other setting a solid 3 star hotel + - Great location - Staff friendly except for cleaners - - Aircon's noisy and don't work during load shedding. I slept 4 hours a night due to heat - Cleaning staff (or at least mine) not very friendly. I slept till 09:30 one morning as I could only fall asleep 02:30 when load shedding ended. Cleaners actually woke me. I asked the lady if she can give me 30 min to freshen up and I would leave. She said no - she needs a specific time. I said 11:00. When I got back to the hotel at 13:00 it wasn't cleaned yet. - You can't shower under the shower head as the soap tray is below it (head height). I think I head my head 6 times. Friends from the trip experienced the same. Who designed it!? - When you close the curtain it closes over the aircon (again who designs this?). I never ever ever complain as I'm in the service business and have a ton of grace for the industry, but for R4000 per night. Nope.

I have to agree with some of the reviewers, this hotel was underwhelming. The room looked like it needed an overhaul, carpet ancient, air conditioner was one of those that leaked water inside and very noisy. The staff weren’t particularly pleasant either. The breakfast on the other hand was quite good. By the way, they have a sister hotel right opposite called Commodore which has a gym and slightly bigger pool. May give that one a try when back in CT.

Great service. Rooms are tidy and clean. The location is okay but it can become very busy at times.

If this hotel was listed as 3 star, I would give a higher rating. Most 4 star services are actually next door. If you need a concierge, wait a few hours for them to get someone from next door. Gym, next door, etc. The rooms need to be refreshed. They are small, okay, it's an old building and it has a great location, but the room should be top notch to make up for that. Also, they are updating slowly and room by room. One of our rooms had a problem with the old key reader, and the locks didn't work or demagnetized the both keys at least 4-5 times in as many days. A few times waiting for someone to come from next door and fix again took over an hour and each time they blamed us for doing something wrong. Really? This hotel is fine, stay here for location, but expect a very basic 3 star experience. from here we went to another Legacy 4 star, and it was clear that the difference was vast. That said, staff in restaurant are great. Very friendly.

We spent four nights at the Portswood Hotel and enjoyed our stay. The room was large and comfortable however could have had more storage space for luggage. The bathroom was clean and open. The room was a little dark with only two small windows and no ceiling lighting meaning we were turning all the lamps on every time we were in the room. It is located in the V&A waterfront with an easy walk to all the restaurants and bars you'll need.

The room itself: the rug in the room feels gross like it has billions of sticky germs in the rug. The shower head is positioned poorly. Wifi was an ordeal; the code provided didn’t work and rather then just give me a new code the desk clerk wasted an HOUR of my time troubleshooting. Sitting in the bar is painfully loud. Why on gods earth they blast music while also having the Television at high levels is beyond me. Bartender couldn’t figure out how to make an old fashioned. He literally just gave me a shot of whiskey and only managed to get me a single cube after I persisted.

We enjoyed our stay at the Portswood and found the staff and location excellent. An excellent breakfast to start your day and a very close walk to the Waterfront Complex. Would highly recommend as a jump off point to explore Cape Town

Stayed for 2 nights in September. Hotel has a decent breakfast buffet, with a variety of fruits, yogurt, breads and pastries. The eggs are made to order. My room was on the third floor, with a view of the main entrance, parking garage and side view of the mountains. Clean bathroom. Two bottles of water, water kettle, instant coffee and tea bags were also available in the room. There is also a small desk/workstation with power cord adapter and usb charging port. Unfortunately, US travellers will need to bring their own adapter because the universal adapt suits UK, Australia, Asia but not US. Close to the aquarium, the Watershed, shopping mall, dining. Security/patrols are seen everywhere.

Only went for dinner so can't speak to the rooms. Parking is covered if you eat at the restaurant, food was pleasant but nothing amazing. The waitress really made it though - Thanks Shirley.

Clean, spacious and comfortable rooms. Attentive and kind staff. And brilliant location. However, the Portswood Hotel is full of proud portraits of Dutch and British ships - without contextualising the horrors of their impact on the nation. Without the naval ‘theme’ it would have been great though.

A nice hotel especially for business trip. Located on a vibrant suburb near waterfront but yet it's quite calm on the inside. Very very clean, charming staff, nice coffee and healthy food... fairly cheap. They have a nice quiet lobby if you have a book to read or work with your laptop on a FREE WiFi 😊

Friendly staff at reception Lovely restaurant, not to busy. The Cape Malay food was great and big portions. We enjoyed the desserts. The Wednesday night 3 course meal looks a winner for R149. Very good service from our friendly waiter. Was awesome to get a free gift, a glass to celebrate the Hotel's 25th Anniversary. Also got complimentary parking. All in all, a lovely belated Wedding Anniversary dinner. It made up for the shocking Spa experience at The Commodore Hotel earlier. Well done Team.

This hotel was a really little gem eat the water ground. It’s location was excellent with a short walk to the V&A waterfront. The amenities were good and the breakfast was good with a person on hand to make you omelettes or fresh fried eggs. The room was nice and they have a turn down service where they supply your room with fresh bottled water and a chocolate. Really nice and enjoyable stay.

I had the pleasure of staying at the Portswood in June of 2019 and was thoroughly satisfied. My initial stay was 4 nights on arrival in Cape Town and one night several weeks later before returning to Canada. The on site restaurant is very good, the breakfast buffet is excellent and the rooms are clean. The V&A is a lovely part of town, safe with lots to do. I'll look to them first on my next visit. Wonderful staff as well.

Hotel room is OK i guess. The staff was nice and attentive. The room was ok but had issues. The bed was hard as a rock. The bath room sink was prone to clogging. The ac system worked well enough to keep the room comfortable. The TV was nice. There was a refrigerator and it worked well to keep drinks cold. I did not utilize the hotels room service but instead called uber eats.

Fantastic location!! 2 minute walk to the waterfront. Comfortable room, excellent beds, well appointed bathroom. Only 1 lift, but it was never an issue. We never waited for it. The bar and bar staff were great fun with an excellent range of cocktails and specialist Gins. The breakfast buffet was outstanding, with beautiful, freshly cooked meals. One of the best I’ve tasted. Definitely recommend this hotel with staff that actually look after all your needs. Everyone had a smile and a hello.

I came with a friend who won a holiday. So we did not choose this Hotel. However, we were so impressed. The staff was so friendly and helpful. They treated us like royalty. Everything was clean. The food was delicious. The staff went out of their way to assist us when we had a question. Well done Portswood Hotel. I will definitely visit you again...
