We had a very good and interesting guided tour with the guide up at the castle today. It was super 😊👋👍 thank you very much to the young man from Praia (Bruno). Greetings from Germany, Ralf

A must see, but get there before it closes. Not sure why they charge locals. A somber reminder of the islands past… and present… it’s still operated by the Spanish corporation 🤷🏽‍♂️

There are two ways to get the amazing view from the fortress. You can go around it, and no need to buy tickets or buy national/ international tickets to visit inside, caves and a nice story of cidade velha. The less positive thing is that people might not speak English to explain the story and what you will see, so you will be mostly looking at things...

Worth a visit. When you arrive you get a small introduction or the history, after you discover the place yourself. Amazing view as a bonus!

We did not go inside as we did not have time. On the outside the best kept fort I have seen, great views well worth a visit

Medieval fortress, cannons, you can buy water and go to WC. The stairs are in good condition. The stairs are not difficult for the healthy elderly. In the middle of the stairs there is a beautiful bar .

Scenic and breath taking views. Too less information offered for entrance ticket price of 5 Euro per person when you walk around. But you receive a paper flyer in advance.

Beautiful view. Would be better if more historical info was provided without having to pay for a guide, or having to scan a QR code for a brief explanation.

Small fee to enter (€5 pp). OK for a 20 min stop and take a couple of good pictures.

This 16th century Fort has been largely rebuilt. You can arrive by car or walk up the path from the ruins of the cathedral. Opposite the gate into the Fort is a visitor centre. A guided tour costs 500 escudos per adult. It was built with slave labour between 1587 and 1593, to ward off pirate attacks. Up to 160 solders were stationed here. Water came from the plateu behind the fort, via an aqueduct which filled the sistern in the centre of the fort.

Definitely a piece of history however I am not sure if it is worthy traveling from Praia just to see this place.

Well restored Fort. Just needs a small museum with better information.

Re-built fortification. Some information on cidade velha and function of the fortress. No information on slave trade.

Forte Real de São Filipe is a 16th century fortress in the city of Cidade Velha in the south of the island of Santiago, Cape Verde. It is located on a plateau above the town centre, 120 meters above sea level. The historic centre of Cidade Velha is an UNESCO World Heritage site since June 2009.The fort was part of a system of defence for the city, which also included six smaller forts on the coast and a wall along the port.

Wonderful, it was an exhilarating experience . The tour guide had a good knowledge of the environment, the people and their culture. Seafood was interesting.
