Clean and well taking care. Service is kind and effective. Food is very very good. I dont give 5 stars because we booked a full week and they where making maintenance of the pool, they should say the guests before going, i booked because of the pool, this is not professional.

Pestana Trópico is a very nice resort located in a beautiful area, but there are still some imperfections. A brightness problem : the room was certainly spacious , but dark , because of a small window, so you have to keep the light on during the whole day . When you turn on the light in the bathroom, it becomes very noisy because of the ceiling fan, BUT THE STAFF is simply great : even if many of them don't master foreign languages, they do their best to help you.

I wish I could give this hotel four or even five stars, but sadly it wouldn't deserve them. We spent 10 nights here in December 2023. The hotel is in desperate need of renovation. Whilst the location is as good as it gets in Praia, as soon as you set foot in the gloomy lobby, your heart sinks. The rooms remind me of caves - dark furniture, small windows, but worst of all minimal lighting. In a balcony room one has to leave the door open to get natural light! TV has few channels, no BBC or TVE (most guest seemed to be French, there is France24 TV but only in English!). The beds in the room are good, but the sunbeds by the pool are very uncomfortable, few have shade, and most were "claimed" by guests who put towels and books on them early in the morning, but then often didn't occupy them. The breakfast has reasonable selection, but the two tempramental coffee machines are overwhelmed when the hotel is full (our second week), and most of the waiting staff (one honourable exception) are less than welcoming or helpful. The hotel seemed to be understaffed in general, and none of those working ever looked happy. On the plus side, the rooms are reasonably priced and the public bus to the city plateau stops right outside. I might expect underinvestment in an independent hotel (perhaps this one is franchised?), but Pestana is a chain with several flagship hotels, and I expected better.

First I would like to thank the staff as they were very friendly, and asked if we need anything. Location was great, as the local beach is near by. The hotel has his own restaurant, food was excellent and even the breakfast. There are some restaurant nearby which can be walking distance or you can also take a taxi in front of the hotel. Had an executive room, but for what I paid it was very disappointing. Inside the shower, there are moulds on the joints. Floor was not very clean, similar with the sink. No glass in the room, had to go to the bar to get some. Very disappointed with that. And when I left someone but their bills on my room.

The welcome was friendly and everyone was very helpful. Location is fine with a good public beach nearby, pool is good. The room was also fine although only one towel for two people even after asking for another. We only stayed one night due to a flight delay. No food available in the restaurant due to a gas shortage although it could be ordered in from elsewhere.

Tropico is my preferred choice for various reasons. The staff are friendly and easy to engage with, breakfast is by far the best I’ve had, and overall the hotel is kept in pristine condition. The location is ideal given its proximity to the beach, and downtown. Highly recommended

Great place to be in Praia! My boyfriend and I came for a few days and we had a great time at Tropico Hotel. We needed to work, and the relax atmosphere and the good internet connection made it easy and enjoyable. Food was also very nice! We recommend it!!!!!

Great hotel, conveniently located in the safer part of Praia, very close to the Prainha and Quebra Canela beaches. Plateau is a bit further away but also easily reachable. The rooms are spacious and tidy with a nice big balcony and a spacious bathroom with large shower. The Pool has a great size and there is enough space for sunbathing without it being too crowded. The breakfast was good and we also had dinner once at the Creole Restaurant and liked the food. The best was the staff and the friendly service. Everyone at this hotel was so incredibly friendly and really made our stay feel so warm and pleasant. All the staff went above and beyond to make us feel welcomed. We specially thank Carlos from reception who has been super helpful and supportive along our entire stay and even beyond. We will surely choose Pestana Tropico again should we ever come back to Cape Verde!

STAY FAR AWAY- NOT A 4* - OUTDATED AND IN HIGH NEED FOR REPARATIONS- VERY BAD VALUE FOR MONEY Really nothing that I liked - very bad experience I usually don’t write reviews although I travel a lot (min. 10 times per year) but I had to do this one Literally everything went wrong: - very rude staff at breakfast and the supervisor (woman) at reception, she asked why didn’t we do an inspection of the room and report it to the receptionist while another, a day earlier, said they wouldn’t have had another room because of some big group - very uncomfortable bed and pillows, almost no sleep for 3 nights - the bathroom door was not closing : horrible - our terrace was next to some works which made it very unpleasant to use the terrace - no towels for the pool…never had this experience with a 4 stars hotel - nobody at the pool to ask if you need a drink or anything - my husband asked for an iron two days in the row and was not possible and no follow up from the receptionist, only solved after discussing with a manager - again, IT’S NOT WORTH THE PRICE, I would say is just a very low 3 stars, I REALLY WISH I WOULD HAVE CHOSEN SOMETHING ELSE

Perfect stay in Praia, Santiago! Staff is top notch in sympathy and attentiveness. Food is delicious and always up to standard. 100% recommend! Will definitely be coming back!

Highly recommend the Pestana Tropico in Praia -- we had a great stay with the hotel as our homebase for exploring Santiago. Staff is attentive and helpful, breakfast spread is consistently huge, beach proximity is unmatched, and the gym is modest but gets the job done. Thanks for a great stay!

I have plenty of things to say about our stay in this hotel. Positive - Location: You are close to the airport, the beach, the old town (20 min by car), and the city center (about 15 min by foot but it's uphill at some point). - The hotel itself is beautiful. We really liked the pool area with the restaurant. - Rooms are big. - Buffet breakfast was good. Lots of options. - The cleaning service was excellent. They left everything spotless in the room. - It was nice to have a restaurant in the hotel. We ate there every day. They have a lot of options, vegetarian and vegan included. They are also flexible to adapt a dish if you request it. - That last point takes me to a negative/positive point about the restaurant and the hotel. One night, my boyfriend ate fish at the restaurant and threw up all night (it's not because the fish was bad or anything, but if it's too hot, avoid dishes with fish in it to be safe). We talked to the receptionist and manager in the morning, and they were excellent at taking care of him. A driver took us to a clinic nearby and explained everything to the receptionist there. The hotel immediately reimbursed us for the consultation and shot my boyfriend got at the clinic. They checked on him all day and sent him tea and food free of charge. We truly appreciated their gesture. They also offered us the ride to the airport for free and the restaurant adapted some dishes for him to eat them. Negatives - Some things are a little bit outdated (they are under renovation, so I think it is not that negative). - The room was big but not very functional or comfortable. For example, we had two twin beds put together, they were not very comfortable. There wasn't a coffee machine or kettle. There was a desk, but the big space could be used differently, in my opinion. - The pool was not very clean. We had the feeling it was never cleaned during the time we were there. - Staff were not very welcoming. Some people at the reception, yes, but most of them would barely answer questions or requests. Same with the restaurant. Sometimes, they were a little bit rude. Never a smile. The receptionist that was there the morning my boyfriend was sick and the manager were incredibly nice, though. Overall, it was a good experience. I wouldn't recommend staying for too long in Praia, though. Unless your plan is to visit museums or historical places, there isn't much to do. But this hotel is a very good option!

I had a wonderful stay at the hotel. It is very close to the city centre. The staff is great and helped us a lot, both with sorting out a car rental situation an helping us to find another place where we could rent a car and by letting us have a late shower before catching our flight, even though late check-outs were no longer possible due to full booking. The salt water pool is both good and the area around the pool is nice to look at. The only downsides were the fact that water ran out of the shower and that the breakfast buffet didn't have any variation over the different days we spent there.

Lovely hotel with everything you need for a great stay in Praia. Wonderful location next to a small, but charming beach. Kind and helpful staff. Amazing breakfast spread and most delicious caipirinhas I've had outside of Brazil.

Its a clean, bright and kind a modern hotel. It has a nice outside swimming pool for the kids. We had ( simple) breakfast everyday and had diner once very good. But they should try to be more friendly.

Hotel is nice, but it is starting to show some wear and tear. Service is par. Reservation included airport transfer, but multiple attempts via calls and emails to request the service went ignored. The hotel nightly rate of approximately $200 per night is very expensive and not reflective of the country, state of hotel, and service. Do not recommend.

Beautiful hotel and great staff, especially Becky from the reception! One note: I really feel like a nice hotel like this should replace water every day (or at least sell bottles of water since there are no stores around). I also wish there were coffee machines in the rooms or free coffee in the lobby

This place is just perfect, and the natural elegance and spirit of hospitality of the Cape Verdeans add a special vibe to it. The only downside, if any, is the presence of mostly graceless, French tourists all over the place… For the rest: • have a glass of local “grogue velho” at the end of your meal: you’ll be peacefully relaxed (and give some to your children, too: they’ll hopefully stop screaming like monkeys); • also, please, do tip the local staff: they are amazing professionals, they get a monthly salary that is probably just twice the price of a night you spend here, and you won’t get broke for leaving just 200 ECV (2 € / 2 $) for each service; • one last thing, for customers complaining about the staff “not smiling” enough: this is my 14th year in Cape Verde, and waiters do smile very rarely. People from Santiago, in particular, have a very humble and respectful attitude (it happens, sometimes, that they smile to me when I start to speak their local kriolu language - worked here, made efforts to learn portuguese and kriolu - but you don’t expect to approach their culture yourself, during the few days you spend here, hanging around the pool and the bar counter, do you?). And even if they don’t smile at all, in any case, remember: this is not Disneyland.

Wow, this hotel is just amazing. It super well located, at the coast, between the city center (Plateau) and the Praia Shopping. All it's services and employees are excellent and we were treated very very well at our stay. It has a nice pool, a gym, bar with big TV for soccer games/news, nice restaurant and taxis 24/7 at the door of the hotel. The food is just amazing.

The staff is very friendly and the hotel is really clean and nicely decorated. The pool is great, but be aware that it's salt water with a double high salt concentration as in the sea. Unfortunately, in a city where the local people like to have loud music all night long, the hotel should have better windows and thicker walls to reduce the party noise. Praia is a city which never sleeps, and so are the guests who have a room at pestana tropico, facing the direction to the city. Another issue is that the restaurant really isn't worth the money. What is a great feature is the free airport shuttle. However, if you make a reservertion for the airport shuttle by email, you don't get any reply (happened to us and other guests). You need to call the reception a day in advance to be sure the shuttle will be at the airport.

The Internet service is excellent, the rooms (especially the bathroom) are a bit tired. Breakfast is repetitive but good, restaurant and bar proposes good quality and variety. Overall is a good hotel. Couldn’t get adjusted to the seawater pool, too much for my taste.

We had the Classic Suite for 6 nights. Good location. Hotel's facilities were very dated, barely maintained, and desperately in need of a major renovation to be qualified for the 4-star category. Service was good; though quality of room cleaning was noticeably inconsistent from day to day. Our suite was spacious, has nice ocean views, but with very basic furnishing and not much attention given to the decoration. Bathroom was dark and some of the facilities were broken and never got fixed during our stay, even though I reported the problems to the front desk on our first day. Overall, the stay was just ok, but a big disappointment for a 4-star Pestana hotel.

  • 2/5 Chiel te L. 1 year ago on Google
First of all, a compliment to the staff, they were very friendly and helpful. The location was also convenient. Unfortunately, there were also some things that were disappointing. From a four-star hotel, you should really expect more. The entire hotel feels worn out. This hotel is really in need of major maintenance. Both in the general areas and in the rooms. In our Isle suite, lamps were broken, a closet broken, a sliding door broken and the furniture was worn. This is really not acceptable for €194 a night. Furthermore, the gym (if it is not locked and the key is not lost) is downright dangerous. Equipment is not maintained and dumbbells literally fall apart (with a chance of injury). The restaurant is okay. Although one night we got sick from the food, as did other guests who also reported this the following day. Prior to our visit, I contacted the hotel several times by email. Emails were partially or not responded to. This made communication difficult. Finally, I tried to discuss with the staff the possibility of changing rooms. But this communication was also difficult. Partly because not every front-office employee speaks English well (and I don't speak Portuguese). In short, first and last time Pestana hotel for us.

The Pestana Trópico is a hotel located on theIlha de Santiago in Cabo Verde only 10 minutes from the historic centre, the neighbourhood of Plateau. It has a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere and is located in one of the most posh residential neighbourhoods of the city, close to the business, financial, educational and cultural centre of Cape Verde, with a dazzling view of the ocean. You can enjoy an outdoor salt water pool, fitness room and relax on the terrace located in the hotel's garden. If you so need, the hotel will arrange a free airport transfer, upon request. If you would like, you are welcome to park your vehicle in our private car park. For dining, the hotel offers a restaurant and a bar. The rooms in this Praia hotel are comfortable and feature contemporary decor, each with an LCD TV and free Wi-Fi.

Friendly staff, quiet, clean and safe. But...they don't seem to understand the tourism business. Bathrooms have no wash cloths, hotel has no store so if you don't have shaving cream, sun screen etc. you will not be able to buy it at the hotel. No bar soap, they use wall mounted liquid dispensers that take a lot of effort to get a little bit of soap out of. And When I saw wall-mounted I mean it, you cannot remove bottle from wall to pour out the soap so you are left pumping away for a little bit of soap just to wash your butt with your bare hand. They have room service but don't leave menus in the room, how to know what to order? There are no clocks in the room and the time on the television set is set to Portugal -- a 2-hour difference. The chairs by the pool do not have cushions but they are available, you just have to find them and lug 'em to the chairs yourself. The included breakfast only served hotdogs as breakfast meat. Now, as an American, we like breakfast meat, if a continental breakfast is your thing then you'll love the fruit and pastries. Truth be told, this hotel would be classified as a motel in the Bronx, USA. Would I ever return? No.
