The
First
World
War
broke
out
in
1914,
affecting
all
of
Europe,
and
Portugal
was
not
spared.
In
1916
AD,
the
guardian
angel
of
Portugal
made
preparations
for
the
visit
of
the
Virgin
Mary
in
a
small
town
60
kilometers
northeast
of
Lisbon,
the
capital
of
Portugal.
There
were
three
children
at
that
time:
six-year-old
Jacinda,
her
eight-year-old
brother
Francis,
and
nine-year-old
cousin
Lucia,
who
were
guarding
the
sheep
on
Lucia's
father's
prairie.
It
was
raining,
so
the
three
children
hid
in
a
nearby
cave.
Although
they
were
sheltered
from
the
rain,
they
could
still
clearly
see
the
sheep
not
far
away.
At
noon,
the
children
had
lunch
and
prayed
the
rosary,
and
everything
was
just
as
usual,
just
like
the
villagers
a
few
miles
away.
The
children
chanted
in
a
very
special
way.
In

to
save
time
for
fun,
they

chanted

beads

the
"Hail

young
man
wearing

shining
robe
standing
in

to

"Do
not
be
afraid,
I
am
the
Messenger
of
Peace,
please
pray
with
me."

he

speaking,
he
knelt
down
and
bowed
his
head
on
the
ground.
The
children
also
knelt
down
and
recited
three
times
after
him:
"Oh!
God,
I
believe
in
you,
I
worship
you,
I
look
to
you,
and
I
love
you.
Please
forgive
those
who
do
not
believe
in
you,
do
not
respect
you,
do
not
look
up
to
you,
and
do
not
love
you."
He
stood
up
and
smiled
and
said:
"Pray
like
this,
and
Jesus
and
the
Blessed
Mother
will
listen
to
you."
After
saying
that
he
disappeared.
The
three
children
were
amazed
and
in
awe.
Although
they
had
no
obligation
to
keep
this
secret,
the
holy
and
beautiful
atmosphere
at
that
time
made
them
really
not
want
to
reveal
it
to
anyone.
As
the
summer
slowly
passed,
the
angel
appeared
again.
The
weather
was
particularly
hot
that
day.
The
three
shepherd
boys
left
the
pasture
and
returned
to
the
well
among
the
trees
in
the
backyard
of
Lucia's
house.
Suddenly,
the
angel
stood
in
front
of
them:
"Pray
a
lot.
The
Sacred
Heart
of
Jesus
and
the
Sacred
Heart
of
Mary
have
something
to
tell
you.
Dedicate
your
prayers
and
sacrifices
to
God!"
Lucia
found
herself
asking:
"How
will
the
sacrifice
be
made?"
“Offer
everything
you
do
to
God
as
expiation
for
sins
that
offend
God,
and
as
a
petition
to
God
for
the
repentance
of
sinners.
And
in
this
way
also
for
us
I
am
the
guardian
angel
of
Portugal.
You
must
accept
and
bear
the
pain
God
inflicts
on
you
with
a
submissive
heart."
After
that,
he
left,
leaving
behind
these
three
deeply
moved
children.
Autumn
has
come,
children
are
still
shepherding
sheep
on
the
hillside
grass,
and
the
angel
visits
for
the
third
time.
When
he
appeared
this
time,
he
held
the
Holy
Grail
in
one
hand
and
the
Holy
Body
in
the
other.
The
Holy
Body
dripped
blood
into
the
Holy
Grail.
Then
the
Holy
Grail
and
the
Holy
Body
hung
high
in
the
air,
while
the
angel
prostrated
on
the
ground
and
chanted
three
times:
"The
Most
Holy
Trinity:
Father,
Son,
and
Holy
Spirit,
I
deeply
admire
you.
Now
I
give
the
most
precious
body
and
blood
of
all
the
tabernacles
in
the
world,
and
the
soul
of
Jesus
Christ
to
you.
Divinity
is
presented
to
you
in
reparation
for
the
indifference,
insult
and
blasphemy
that
has
been
done
to
God
by
the
world.
Through
the
infinite
merits
of
the
Sacred
Heart
of
Jesus
and
of
the
Immaculate
Heart
of
Mary,
grant
to
you
the
conversion
of
sinners.”
After
speaking,
he
stood
up,
gave
the
Holy
Communion
in
his
hand
to
Lucia,
and
gave
the
Holy
Grail
in
the
other
hand
to
Jacinda
and
Francis
to
drink
from,
and
said:
"Please
respectfully
receive
the
Holy
Body
and
Holy
Grail
of
Jesus
Christ.
blood,
as
an
atonement
for
the
sins
of
sinners,
as
a
comfort
to
your
God."
And
he
went
away.
As
time
passed
day
by
day,
the
children
thought
of
this
messenger
of
peace
from
time
to
time.
They
looked
forward
to,
prayed
for,
and
hoped
for
his
coming
again,
but
he
never
came
again.
The
two
prayers
he
taught
have
remained
vivid
in
the
children's
minds.
They
carefully
followed
the
instructions
of
the
angels:
make
sacrifices
more
often
and
pray
always.
