Lovely Hotel, Pub, Restaurant and and most of all the Staff! I stayed here on business for a month and had the best of times. I’ve broken down and given a brief description of each below. Hotel- I stayed in various rooms throughout my stay and couldn’t fault any of them. Very modern, clean, spacious, homely with everything you’d expect. Pub- The pub itself is set on two levels, but either side is full of character, charm and has a great friendly atmosphere. Restaurant- Throughout my stay I was fortunate to have tried most of the evening menu and was not once disappointed. The food was always served with a smile, full of taste, flavour and presentation and my compliments go to the team involved. That’s not forgetting the breakfast (It’s faultless). Staff- I was always greeted on arrival with a friendly, helpful and organised Becca who had everything ready. Ben, Becca and the whole team are an absolute credit to the whole establishment and without these charismatic, lovely people the place wouldn’t be what it was. I will be returning to Cardiff in the future and will look forward to seeing the Malsters Arms and team once again.

On a Christmas lunchtime we where refused a drink at the empty bar by very unfriendly young girl ! She was chatting with her friend and without Greeting us or saying Merry Christmas she shuttered at us “No you can’t stay at the bar and can’t have any drink and can’t sit anywhere we are fully booked “ then turn her back and carry on chatting!! Very disappointed and kind of feeling insulted by the rude attitude we left and took few photos of the empty Bar area which was clearly not fully booked! In fact they where not other tourists except us visiting ! We where at Christmas Day mass in the famous Llandaff Cathedral and since the Maltsters arms is on the way we just wanted to have a Christmas cheers at the bar and go ! Instead we got unfriendliness and attitude! Thank you Maltsters Arm but we can’t recommend the restaurant after this unpleasant Christmas experience!! We don’t know how the hotel staff is but if they had the same training like the girls at the bar we would not want to stay in !!!

We stayed here overnight from England. We were running late with 2kids under 5 in the back. We called ahead and were told that they closed at 11pm. Our Eta was 10.50 but we were low on fuel and in the middle of the fuel crisis. We asked how we can get in if we don't make it before 11pm as we needed to get petrol. The female manager advised us there was no alternative: no one was staying after 11pm, she could not guarantee anyone would be there, and we realised may have to find somewhere else to stay - or sleep in the car! With a 6month old that was not possible. I was forced to drive at speed and with panic, to get there on time. Turns out the pub still had staff there past 11.30pm.... The stress and upset it caused was horrendous. The only reason I didn't give 1 star is because the male manager in the morning was amazing and lovely. But despite that, I would not come back.

Very friendly pub. Food served all day every day and decent value for money. Serves Aspallscider on draught. Plenty of comfortable outdoor seating too.

The team were very good. Obviously new young member of staff took our food order. We did have to ask if we could order our food. Steak turned up but was sirloin rather than rib eye. This was confirmed by member staff who was very apologetic and offered to change it. I said it was ok and stayed with the sirloin. The streak was cooked perfectly and tender the chips were crispy and tasted great. I was brought a complementary drink - soda and lime which was thoughtful. When we went to pay the staff were further apologetic for the mix up. Atmosphere was lovely and relaxed and i liked the new soft chairs.

Lovely clean room, comfortable bed and the shower was wonderful. The restaurant however was not so wonderful. Initially, the staff weren't great. Not very attentive or helpful. We had arranged for a couple of friends to meet us there for a meal on the first night. We were told, as we were ordering that they had no steak, or lamb. We weren't informed of this before we ordered and one of our guests only eats steak. They weren't apologetic or tried to offer us any alternatives. We decided to eat elsewhere. We had breakfast there the 2 mornings and ate at the restaurant 1 evening. The food was not great at all. Very basic and not very well cooked or presented. Most of the food seemed to be microwaved pretty well though. I received my meal, but they had forgotten to order my husbands meal, so we then had to wait a further 10 minutes for his meal to arrive at the table. The cleanliness of the restaurant was questionable too. The children's high chairs were left with food debris and the carpet needed cleaning. The toilets weren't clean either. 1 staff member 'Emily' was fabulous though. Very friendly and nothing was too much trouble. I do believe she was the best thing about the restaurant. Despite this, we would stay here again, but we wouldn't use the restaurant or bar here.

Last weekend I took 6 of your bedrooms at a cost of over £800. I was told by my family that the rooms were lovely. We decided off the back of this took book in for a meal as our last experience with you was pretty poor, but we thought we would give the restaurant another chance! Unfortunately the standard of food and service was still very poor! I ordered two kids meals, the chicken tenders consisted of two very small pieces of chicken, a handful of chips with no peas / beans or salad?! The cheeseburger was apparently ‘OK.’ I ordered the mixed grill which consisted of a long steak - 1 inch wide by 6 inches long?! Very odd really, looked like an off cut of a bigger piece. The whole dish was absolutely swimming in fat which required me to put my napkin in the middle of the dish just to absorb it! The other main was fish and chips. The fish was utterly inedible and could be picked up like a piece of wood from the end of the tail! Completely unbelievable that the kitchen would actually even send it out to be served!! That dish was taken back to the kitchen where a new piece of fish was put back on the old plate 5 mins later!! So the peas and chips were pretty cold and pushed aside! Then after reminding the waiter that no one had brought the kids their garlic bread, it arrived after everyone had finished!! Truly disappointing experience, and very reminiscent of our last meal with you! I think That’s the last time eating there for us - the kitchen staff clearly lack experience and professionalism required for service! Additionally I was handed my steak knife across the table, with the waiter holding the blade with his fingers!! I also had to remind the waiter that he hadn’t brought our drinks after 10 minutes of just being sat there!! Overall very dissatisfied with the food! It is worth adding however the staff were very friendly!

My wife and I travelled to Cardiff from N Wales with our daughter so she could have a operation at the University Hospital of Wales. We booked to stay at the Maltsters Arms Hotel. I am disabled and on arrival we were treated like royalty by all off the staff. Our room was of the highest standard and the food was excellent in the hotel. We had to leave early as our daughter was discharged sooner than we had expected. The hotel manager Greg was so helpful and sorted out a refund for us. I can only say a huge thank you to Greg and all his staff and from my experience would recommend The Maltsters very highly. Once again thank you Greg and your team.

Friendly staff, food was delicious although there was a bit of a wait for it, but it was worth it. Very good value for money overall. Will definitely visit again.

Visited for the first time and won't return. Found the place to be somewhat run down and grubby. Very slow service. Wrong drinks order received. Took an additional 30 mins to receive correct order. Told to go to bar to order a second drink during our meal. Found our waiter to be dismissive and rude. Attempted to resolve issues whilst there with a senior member of staff, but they too were disinterested and wouldn't even listen to complaint. Gave up. I don't know, perhaps we caught them on bad day! Shame really as the food was tasty.

Perfect! Everything about my stay has been amazing. Esme who checked me in made me feel really welcome. The room was wonderful (Llandaff Cathedral); loads of room, plenty of places to put things, loads of plugs, lovely big bathroom and super comfy bed. The room had been left toasty and warm when I arrived and it was spotless. The parking is free for guests and the bar staff were friendly and accommodating. Food was great. I was staying for a girlfriends wedding and this was just right. Thank you!

What a beautiful place, warm and welcoming Staff where friendly food was great well presented (could have done with one more slice of chibatta bread 🤣🤣) But the only let down was no host on arrival and food was served by the chef!! Who I have to say was bubbly, friendly and couldn't do enough for us overall a 5*service Thank you ☺️

The team at that Malsters could not have been any nicer. We stayed for a two night work trip. Friendly welcome, helpful throughout the stay, food was freshly cooked and delicious. Location is ideal for visiting the centre. An enjoyable stay.

Came in for food and to do the quiz night this evening, and had a fantastic time. Was looked after by Kirsty (believe she’s a manager), who was incredible and attentive, and made me feel incredibly welcome. The quiz was great, fantastic host. Chris made the evening thoroughly enjoyable! Food was also cooked amazingly. Will definitely be returning next week!

Good meal last night. Bedroom very different with bath in the bedroom. Shower room through opaque glass 👓 doors new very good. Shame TV control went walk about! Headboard needs recovering as well the curtains need re-lining. Staff very pleasant ' except young lady told us we would have to move tables even if we hadn't finished our meal as the table was booked for 8pm. As luck has it we'd finished our meal before that time limit. Would we stay again? Not sure there were some good points as well as negative.

  • 5/5 Jaci S. 1 year ago on Google
Chris and Ben were outstanding! Nothing was too much trouble for them - and I had to move tables twice because of some noisy people, then I was cold next to the doors. They did it all with a smile. I know Chris from a different bar I used to go to, and he really is exceptional, so it's great to see him back in the neighbourhood, and with Greg as manager, too. Really enjoyed the food and wine - some fabulous choices. More expensive than it used to be, but then isn't everywhere. Really comfortable, lovely atmosphere. Will definitely become my new local!

Really enjoyable experience. We had quite a last minute booking for Sunday dinner, having not eaten at Maltsters before. We both really enjoyed our food and experience. Hot plates to keep the food warm, really good sized portions, lashing of gravy (I'm originally northern so this went down a treat). The staff were lovely, really accommodating, found us a great table and were very attentive without being 'too much'. Thoroughly enjoyable dinner and would highly recommend to friends and family. We'll definitely be back again soon.

Booked on line , table for 2 upstairs in bar at 1900 and that’s what I got. Not too busy and staff very friendly and attentive. Good range of pub style food although it would have been nice to have an alternative to chicken in a meat kebab with chorizo. Swapped chunky chips for fries with my main no issue no cost. My wife’s Sirloin was ordered rare but came medium to well done and the meat felt like it was too new and not aged enough.

Came for food and drinks with a friend and to join the quiz. Ordered easily via the app, food came promptly and was as described and expected. Quiz was far beyond our expectations. Great effort has been put in to ensuring it was a fun night. Look forward to coming back!

Went for Christmas Dinner here with Family. The starters we brought out quite quick, which everyone seemed to enjoy. For the main course, four of us ordered steak which was very tough and hard to cut threw even with a steak knife. We were brought out extra gravy and the guy serving asked if there's was anything else he could get us. I asked if I could have a pig in blanket and some stuffing. He came back and said it doesn't come with it even though we paid £70 a head. Four of us who had the steak left it on the plate as was to tough. No one came to our table and asked if the meal was OK. The staff who took our plates away clearly saw we had left the steak and still said nothing. Within a minute of taking our plates the dessert was brought out. My wife asked the waitress if they could wait five minutes as we've only just finished our main course. She gave my wife a stinking look and said fine! I had cheesecake for dessert which was awful and I left.

Service was very good, Chris was friendly and welcoming. The menu gives you a really wide variety to choose from. The meal was very good from start to finish. It's pub grub but it's good pub grub. Good wine list too. Wine and food is reasonably priced. Well done all round.

Excellent food, reasonable prices, friendly and attentive staff. A peaceful environment and the music at a low level - so considerate if one of your party has hearing issues

A pub very much like usyk, dunno how its up there but it is punching at heavyweight levels. The bread of heaven sharer may need a little more balsamic, but it is cruising along as a top top food. The burgers are like brentford. Shouldn't be top league but they're there to stay. The man whom summoned the almighty sauces went and managed to knock up a garlic mayo too! Absolute top lad!

Large tastefully decorated rooms. Extremely pleasant and helpful staff who went out of their way to look after bus. Enjoyed the breakfast which was hot ,tasty and cooked well. The breakfast chef wanted to do his best to please the customer. Thank you .

Stayed 2 nights, ate in their restaurant both nights & both mornings had breakfast. The staff were EXCELLENT, giving great service with a smile from every team member, despite being busy and short staffed (like many hospitality venues at the moment). The business is a credit to the manageress who never seemed to be off duty during our entire stay.

Lovely pub serving good food.We visited there recently(Sunday 8/8/21) with my son and his two daughters. One has a nut allergy. We informed the staff and the manager came out to speak to my son and his wife to reassure them that everything was done to ensure that there was no possibility of nut contamination.Considerate and caring staff.

Service was appalling, understaffed, Sunday lunch trio minus lamb. Beef and Turkey dry and tough, ordered extra cauliflower cheese and stuffing balls - never arrived - run out but weren't told.

A fantastic meal, staff are great and lovely atmosphere!!! The covid policy they have in place makes you feel safe and secure, you don't have to worry they enforced the social distancing which is great. I was recommended the bread if heaven, it dies disappoint 😋😋

Really impressed. A good friendly welcome, a table booked for dinner and shown to my room. Nice spacious room, good shower, in the bar, the Brains SA was bang on, the food superb, friendly service. Then a good restful sleep and a very nice Full Welsh breakfast. Only 2 moans, following the sat nav, it's easy to miss the carpark and the bottles water in the room was only sparkling, but hey, they didn't know I don't like sparkling, so not the end of the world. Would definitely recommend and hopefully will go again.

We had a table of 8 ladies booked for a Christmas lunch, we had a friendly welcome with drinks on the table within a few minutes, the lunch was 3 course they were all piping hot ,plenty of food on the plate with lots of vegetables brought separate along with the gravy ,only one problem we had was 6 of the ladies had the Christmas crumble ,there was too much spice of some kind in it so it could not be eaten, would not put us off going back again .

Met up with friends for a meal at the Molesters. We have done so for a few years mostly mid week. The food is always very good. My partner was raving over the fish and chips. The staff are polite and friendly. All very laid back. Food prompt. Service good.

A truly magnificent building. It is light inside with beautiful stained glass windows and very modern sculpture which really adds to the experience. The only thing I would request would be some labels alongside the tombs so the different people could be more easily recognised.

One miserable mumbling barman, no smile, please or thank you. Other guy seems to try his best but isn’t well trained. Gingery chap polite and helpful. Manager pleasant. Lots of menu items not available but you’re not told when ordering so I struggle to understand why there is an electronic ordering system. After ordering we’re told it’s not possible to have a sauce with no bacon. Sauces preordered and microwaved? Later still we’re told one of the mains is not available and offered beef or chicken burger as an alternative to the veggie burger ordered. Unlikely to be acceptable to most people!! 4 starters arrive and all have accompanying bread as a key element but no butter available. This is a must to really enjoy and we should have been told before ordering. Paying in excess of £25 for the starters, I expected more. The veggie sausage main although not what I initially wanted was tasty, hot and enjoyed. The manager gave us a bottle of wine which was appreciated but the least he needed to do really, considering all the issues. Although overall we had a good evening, I can’t say I’d rush back because I’m not sure the place is reliable enough in terms of service and food quality/availability to risk taking friends and family.

We arrived at 12 midday before it got busy, and the service was extremely quick. I had requested space for a pram which was accommodated, and a high chair was also provided, thank you for this. Brogan served us and she was lovely, she made time to ‘chat’ to my baby which was really sweet. Will definitely return.

Great dog friendly pub that does excellent roast dinners on Sundays. It's very popular, so probably best to book! Their puddings are remarkable, the biscoff and gingerbread ice-cream Sundae comes in a pint glass, probably wise to share😁
