What a great pub with serious history of railway heritage. Go in and have a good look around. To get upstairs foot the iriginal cast iron Great Western Railway staircase. Staff are efficient, helpful and generally everything you'd wish for in a pub.

The Great Western is a must-visit on a pub crawl in Cardiff. It's right next to the train station, has cheap beer and the food and service is always excellent. The pub is always pleasant even on a Saturday night.

Stay away from the mushroom risotto, tasted like microwaved cement with Rabbit droppings in it!! Only good thing was the cheap booze. Had the traditional breakfast in the morning, the bacon was mostly fat and very undercooked. Table was sticky and fork still had food on from previous night.

Stopped here for breakfast after an early start to visit the university open day. Annoying roadworks outside which unfortunately could be heard loudly inside and detracted from the experience. Food is as expected and not expensive and the hot drinks are free refills which is good.

One of my Favourite spoons in Cardiff. Nice to have a bit of music and a few drinks. Food was absolutely out of the world. This was the best spoons food I've ever had. Ideally located near the Cardiff Central train station. And a short walk from the city centre. Lots of space. Few floors with loads of seating. Can't wait to return. Fast service by the staff.

Decent spoons, a stone's throw from Cardiff Central station, nice historic building, and the usual suspects on the bar, loses a star for having too many high chairs (posing tables)

Only went for drinks. Such great value. Nice vibe. Wasn't too busy. Cannot fault a wethersppons!

Only popped in for a coffee my friend had larger. Was so pleased you have a disabled toilet downstairs. It was very cosy and staff were lovely. Coffee machine wasn't very hot and had no sprinkles for cappuccino and I personally cleaned the area on three occasions with my own tissues. Would however go back again to try the food as it looked good passing us.

Quick service and nice food. Prices are reasonable. However during weekends its very crowded and noisy. People are screaming soo badly.

Wouldn't want to go back here bacause of the door staff/security. Looking Menacing and unwelcoming apon entry and then oddly patrolled the place telling people where they could and couldn't stand. Observed them rub several people up the wrong way which as you would expect resulted in them being removed. Saw them tell an older lady to stop dancing. All very odd and ruined the atmosphere.

Although a very busy pub still does a pretty good job at serving food and drinks in good time. Very big inside too. Sometimes food presentation isn't the best but still tastes good tbf.

This is a beautiful building, seemingly having all of is lovely exterior period features intact. All the specialness of the period architecture is immediately lost after entering, however. Once inside you could be in any mediocre hotel bar or bland, "refurbished" pub. We were sitting under the balcony, where a large group of very drunk lads were throwing about buckets full of beer, to the sticky, moist detriment of those in the vicinity underneath. Food was delivered promptly, and was appropriately mediocre. It was eaten quickly before last-minute ingredients were provided by the inebriated bucket-jockeys on the balcony above. No plans to return here, unless as a rendezvous point with plans to move quickly on.

Walked in and bouncers immediately told us to follow them. Took us to a side room full of bouncers and told us to strip down to prove we didn't have any drugs (we didnt). Threw us out anyway. Dunno how they're allowed to get away with it, it seemed they were more disappointed we didn't have drugs for them if anything.

Great food for cheap. Just as a spoons should be however the venue itself could've been nicer themed.

Ordered on the app, the worker who served the food gave us attitude when i said i ordered the items separate her response You should have told us at the till. By time she got a spare plate since it was all put on one plate, the food was already cold. Then went behind bar in to the side kitchen area then proceeds to mess with her curly hair and glasses then serving food to another table without washing her hands. Was not happy to see the food hygiene protocols not been followed. Will not be coming back.

This place is huge. It's in a beautiful building with spiral staircase leading to an upper level with another bar and a little outside area for the vapors. There was a great atmosphere on 6 Nation's match day. Also, the volume was on the TV and afterwards piped music. Which is a welcome addition that my local Weatherspoons doesn't offer.

What a place! Bit of a Cardiff icon, in my opinion. Really nice building, it must have seen quite a bit of history in its time. Having been there only once the other w/e, but having walked past it on many an occasion when back in the city, I quite enjoyed my time there. Nice (very) bunch of people, noisy(very), boisterous (very), good-natured (very) atmosphere, excellent bar staff too. I got the impression it’s a kind of warm-up place to get the evening going. I enjoyed it there. Half-deaf on the way back though.

Wow (and it’s for the wrong reasons) First of all dirty plates, I ordered a small nachos and was given a dollop of frozen guacamole I was stunned one of the workers called Sion treated me with total disrespect and dropped salsa all down my leg and the worst thing is didn’t even apologise. I will never be eating here again awful customer service awful pub. Central bar is the best Wetherspoons pub in town.

Great atmosphere, friendly door and bar staff. Busy Saturday evening but speedy service, fantastic range of drinks at an amazing price. They still accept cash - bonus. If your visiting Cardiff, make sure you put this place on your list.

Called in last weekend for pint. Got 2 pints direct from bar then ordered another drink and food from the table service. Staff delivering food virtually threw plate on table and not a word spoken. Had pint delivered to table and noticed bottle top at bottom of glass ! Question: how was this not noticed when poured and again not noticed when delivered to table ?? Eventually managed to attract attention of staff who took it away and got another. Yes apologies but don't expect service like this anywhere. Next time I get off at station will walk past and find another pub. Lucky to get the stars that they did and that only because the beer I did have was good as was the food.

What's to say? Typical Wetherspoons - cheap drinks & pub grub and lots of room with additional seating outside. (Food not great but is acceptable given the price you pay - we'd eaten in a few restaurants over the past couple of days that were not too far removed from quality - but at least 4 times more expensive!)

  • 3/5 Bec P. 1 year ago on Google
Had a traditional breakfast. Obviously pre-prepared as it came out super quick, but tasty. My issue is the price we were charged. We were charged over £6 for a breakfast, but in our way out the sign said £5-odd. Disappointing.

  • 3/5 Keri R. 10 months ago on Google
Typical 'Spoons' affair, you get what you pay for, had a breakfast muffin, egg was cold and 'rubbery', plate was freezing affecting everything else on the plate. Staff were pleasant and efficient though!

This isn’t a review about your food or atmosphere. This is a review about your uneducated staff member. On Tuesday 6th June after seeing Coldplay at the principality stadium I was safely escorted out due to being pregnant. After leaving the premises I walked over to the Great Western Pub and the queue to get in was quite long, now like I said I’m pregnant and I only wanted to go in to use the toilet which at this point I was really desperate to use. So I went over to the security lady and asked politely if I could just go in to use the toilet and I’ll be straight back out, I wasn’t there for a good time, drink or food, I just needed the toilet. This lady refused me going in and said I needed to join the queue. I mentioned again I couldn’t wait that long I was really desperate. She then said ‘what makes you any different to anyone else stood in line’ (being pregnant I thought??!) anyway, I walked away to join the queue and said ‘that’s shocking’ which alot of people in the queue even said the same thing. Anyway a lovely gentleman at the front said I could go in-front of him in the queue and everyone else around was happy for me to do this! I come face to face with the same security lady and she said ‘you’re not coming in here, you showed signs of aggression and I won’t stand for it’ now I was not on your premises when I stated how shocking I thought she was and so that was completely unreasonable, not only that, it’s actually illegal to refuse a pregnant woman to use the toilet. If this is the sort of door staff you pay to manage your doors then I dread to think what kind of cold hearted staff you have inside the pub. As women we should have a very clear understanding of each other, especially when it comes to pregnancy. I’m actually really really shocked this has happened to me. I had to walk the streets trying to find a toilet, I had to try and look for a pub with a small queue to get into so I could use the toilet. I physically cannot believe it. I’ll never let this go. And will always advise people of this when going to your pub. Shocking!

Probably the worst wethersppons breakfast I've ever had !!! Not very warm , bacon had been cooked to death, kept in hot holding, and gone curly. The fried egg was tough to say the least!!! I'm sure if would have made a good beer mat !! The hash browns were greasy. We were never asked if the food was OK. I would suggest you just have coffee or drinks

We called in for a quick drink before going to our office Christmas party. It was super busy with everyone in the festive mood. It was a little disconcerting that no one was asked to show their Covid pass on the door but we went in regardless. We enjoyed the time we spent there though as the atmosphere was buzzing. Would certainly go there again.

Food was average at best, soggy bread fatty bacon and rubbish tea. Tables were sticky and poorly cleaned, visited late evening and early for breakfast, not something I will rush to repeat. Staff however were pleasant and friendly

  • 5/5 Gail M. 2 years ago on Google
Good food friendly staff. Unfortunately we were sat by the door nearest the station and it was really cold as people came in and out. Will try and get there earlier next time and sit inside where it would be warmer 😊

  • 3/5 The A. 2 years ago on Google
The only problem I really have is it's difficult to access the seating downstairs with a wheelchair. Also, if they were able to label a few tables for disabled access only, that would be amazing because it seems very difficult to find a seat that someone with a wheelchair could sit at. Theres typically plenty of the tall tables and seats but very few disabled friendly seats especially seen as most people aim to sit in those normal seats rather than the tall table seats.

Unusual for a Wetherspoons pub, lovely building though. Had a quick meal before my train was due and it was very nice.

Popped in here for a brunch. Service at the bar was very quick and Jan was amazing! Outstanding customer service and had a good laugh. Drinks were fine and food is what you can expect from a whetherspoons. Would definitely be back. The pub is actually really big and split across different floors. Also so handy being next to the station!

Went to The Great Western on possibly one of the busiest days for a long time. Big event going on at the principality and the weather was bad. So for most people traveling by train this would have been a good 1st stop. The staff was very organised, not much of a wait to get a drink, prompt service. Table's cleaned as soon as one became available and glasses taken away as soon as they were empty. So impressed, we stayed longer than we expected to. 👍

  • 5/5 Huw 2 years ago on Google
Great location as near the train station and right at the entrance to the centre. Really cheap prices with a large selection of food and drinks in house. Service was really quick as during lunch hour and very quiet, but this place does get very busy at night and weekends.

  • 1/5 Bradley W. 2 years ago on Google
Customer service needs working on. Lady behind the till thought she was too good to tell me what drink came with my breakfast and proceeded to make an issue of it, slap a menu at me and then make it more awkward. Asked for a hot drink and a cold drink, just got a coffee cup. I've then asked for the cold drink and she started shouting I didn't order one. I then asked to order one and she got funny and proceeded to shout at me from behind the bar as I sat down. Even funnier is, I gave her a tip and she still went on one.

  • 2/5 Linda S. 2 years ago on Google
I really liked the food there, but it's not ideal for visually impared patrons. I also felt that one of the door staff was out of order by forcing myself as an able bodied person to use the disabled toilet. Suffice to say, I probably won't be returning to that particular wethspoons any time soon. Hence the lowly 2 star rating from myself

  • 4/5 Robert T. 1 year ago on Google
Typical wetherspoons at the heart of city centre. Used app to order, service was good and prices very reasonable. Table was wet and unclean but nothing some beer mats and a wipe down wouldn't have sorted. Would recommend.

Ordered 3 large breakfast via the app no notification stating they were out of eggs just came out with an extra hash brown which you've already got 3 of. They should firstly be informing you prior to taking the order and offering you a choice iofreplacement item. Also given the most measly serving of beans ever.

I wouldn’t typically review a place like Spoons because I feel as if on some sense you know what you’re going to get. Decent food for a decent price - however, after the experience I had in this restaurant I feel compelled to review. I, and some others planned to meet some friends and decided to gather here and eat. However, one of my friends had a mcdonalds voucher so decided to get small fries and a coke and eat inside spoons since that’s where everybody else was eating anyways. We had all sat down for about 5-6 minutes before a member of staff came over and started SHOUTING at my friend saying how disrespectful it was for her to be eating something else in the building (as if this grotty pub was some fine establishment), my friend, being non-confrontational and trying to diffuse the situation was instantly apologetic and politely asks if she could just put the mcdonalds in her bag and continue to sit down with us, to which he replied, (now standing over her and once again shouting) ‘no! You need to get up right now before I ban all of you!’ and ‘you leave right now or you’re never leaving!’ (which sounded like a light threat) as she picks up her bag and coat, getting up to leave, he continues to verbally berate her saying ‘Come on! It’s now or never!’. And motioning her angrily to pack up faster. (The whole restaurant now quiet watching him scream at this poor woman.) This situation could easily of been handled by him politely telling her that if she wanted to sit in the building, she had to get rid of her food and order, (even silently and politely asking her to leave would be okay!) but I guess that a grown man yelling at and humiliating a young woman over a small mcdonalds fries and coke is acceptable(?). As I had already ordered, I couldn’t leave, however some people went with her (out of pure disgust for the way she was treated). When my food arrived on the table by the man, he spat out the sentence ‘here’s your food. Thanks for ordering, unlike some of your friends.’ with a rude tone and disgusted look on his face. Being a server should always be about diffusing difficult situations, it should NEVER be about starting difficult situations. I am so dissatisfied with the member of staff and do not recommend at all.

Good place to go before the rugby. Friendly staff and quick service. Does get a bit full after the game. Only down side is they prices up for the internationals. Not far on people who pop in everyday for a pint and a chat

Very disappointed with our visit to this pub. We are both in our 60s & asked people on the next table to stop shouting very loudly about stepping on cats heads. One of the bouncers attended & said we should move if we didn’t think what they were laughing about was a joke. We were treated like we were the perpetrators of the problem & not the victims. When I was leaving your establishment I expressed my concerns about our treatment & was physically stopped by staff from leaving your pub & told that the police have been called& I explained that I work I’m a nurse in police custody & my friend is a lecturer. He insisted that I shown him my ID & all photos on my phone. We are absolutely devastated that we were treated in such a intimidating way when we were just enjoying ourselves on a pre Christmas meeting. We do have photos of the people involved!
