Stunning food, excellent service and wonderful staff. Have had many drinks in the Pen and Wig over the years, but somehow this is the first time I've been in for food. Wow I've been missing out! The only aspect of the afternoon which was anything but perfect, was the incredibly rude table sat nearby. They spoke to every member of staff as though they were less than human, snatched food off of plates going back to the kitchen and demanded refunds. It was absolutely mortifying. They found excuse to complian about absolutely everything and made it abundantly clear they had never worked in a customer facing role, especially not hospo. Cannot wait to come back as the food and drink was exceptional. It's been a very long time since we have been out for such a great meal (at an excellent price point). Thank you to all the hard working staff, see you soon!

Watched staff be berated by an awful table who snatched food from plates going back to the kitchen and shouted the entire time until they got their money back. No wonder nobody wants to work in hospo anymore, there was a bit of a wait on food but you don't scream at a fellow human being for that. When the food did arrive, it was brilliant, we turned up late in service and were amazed to get a table. Will be back, wine was brilliant too and an excellent price point. Service was charming throughout, some people are truly awful.

We went to the Pen & Wig for dinner. Our dog Ollie was made very welcome, which immediately helped us to relax! The atmosphere was lovely and there was an impressive range of draught beers and ciders. The menu was varied and interesting. We all enjoyed our meals which were generous and nicely cooked. The service was excellent and we would definitely recommend. We'll be back when next visiting Cardiff.

First time in the Pen & Wig and it won't be the last. Booked a table, which was clearly marked on arrival. The lady greeted us with a friendly smile and showed us to the table. Friendly staff, Food was delicious, prompt service and a good pint. What more could you ask for.

Met for a family lunch, food was superb with an excellent cask ale choice. Staff could not have done more for us, thank you. We covered an age range from 5 to 73 with our dog and everyone left happy. Wish I lived closer to visit more often.

Cheap on a Monday for cask ales. Nice food and polite staff. I've only ever eaten the same thing when i have eaten but others in party all seem happy with their choices. Quiz night Tuesday. Nice relaxed atmos for the most part.

Very rude staff on the 6 Nations Wales v England rugby match this year. We always used to come to the pub with friends to watch games on the TV screens there but the pub has now changed how things work and you have to book a table even just to sit and have a drink. As we hadn't booked we ended up standing all day to watch the games. The manager was carrying glasses and smashed a load of them right next to where I was standing with my drink. I was showered in glass splinters but no apology was offered at all. I then asked politely if I could have another drink as I thought that glass could have gone into it, but I got a blunt and rude response saying I shouldn't have been standing where I was, even though I didn't have much choice due to the table reservation system. The manager did eventually grudgingly replace my drink but only gave me a half and not a pint that I had been drinking which was very poor. Friends also said that some of the other bar staff were very unfriendly. I appreciate it was a busy day but surely priority is for the safety, well being and happiness of customers. The experience has put myself and friends off going there again.

Excellent service, good food. Only downside very noisy, yappy daschund. I understand that dogs are allowed, and there were other dogs on the premises who were well-behaved. The owner should have been asked to leave or control the dog.

How is this for a welcoming "public" house: a black man walks in at 12:20, what do you do? Apparently watch him walk in and then ring the bell 40 minutes before your website says you close, 10 whole minutes before the bar staff themselves claim that you close and refuse service. An absolute toilet of a pub which wants to sell itself as "exclusive" by excluding anyone outside of the top tax bracket - as indicated by their prices. Don't go there if someone pays you.

Great chilled pud. There is a comfy beer garden and a cozy inside. The food is good but standard

Good selection of drinks. 1 of our party had the Mac n cheese and the falafel and really enjoyed it. Staff were friendly and helpful. Can be a bit cold with the doors to the garden opening and closing. Seating outside front and back. On street parking close by and close to bus stops

A lovely welcoming pub within the legal district of Cardiff city center. Has a spacious beer garden in rear of establishment, and a small seating area out front. Food menu is quite unique compared to many other pubs in that it offers a modern spin to traditional pub grub. The prices are very affordable and the quality is excellent. Wide range of real ales and spirits. On street car parking available. Free WiFi. Highly recommended.

We came here for the second time because it is really great. Excellent food (including amazing kids menu), attentive service, not overcrowded, not too noisy for a pub... so far, this is the best place in Cardiff we've even been!

Great discovery of a pub whilst looking for pre-theatre (new theatre Cardiff) food & drink. Close to Civic Centre and a mixture of clientele from lawyers to youngsters. Great ale selection, top gins and good wines. Food menu has something for everyone at a reasonable price - we had very ample house salads with an optional chicken & bacon topping and excellent chunky chips. Would definitely come again if on this side of the city.

Visited this place today. Have to say I was very disappointed with the selection at 5pm on Sunday. No turkey, no lamb, 1 beef, no cauliflower, no cheesecake, no bread and butter pudding. Starter and mains came at the same time ! So many things not available. What we did get was nice and the staff were friendly but seriously sort out the menu !

Overpriced and understaffed. The pub itself is nice enough and the beer garden was okay but for the price of the drinks you could go somewhere nicer.

Beautiful traditional pub retaining many original architectural features including beautiful stone floor. Excellent large selection of real ales.. food delicious and reasonably priced. Welcoming interior and large shaded beer garden. Highly recommended.

A little bohemian...full of student types and middle class older folk. Liked the atmosphere ..bar staff very friendly and a great range of craft beers. Didn't think much of the reserved tables system but get its probably a hangover from covid. Garden is perfect and doesn't skimp on the heaters. Generally would recommend if you just want a chilled chat with friends. It was very busy early evening but thinned out alittle ( on a friday) guessing it's a stepping stone to town. Thumbs up from me!

Amazing service as usual. I’d say the dishes are very high in calories but nevertheless very delicious. Staff is kind and respectful.

Visited Cardiff, met up with some friends, and had fun times. Went to pen & wig for Sunday lunch, I sadly, for medical reasons, I have to eat cardboard ( vegan options). I didn't have much choice on the menu, that's normal. My friends' plates were stacked with delicious yummy food, as I could only order the veggie burger. It did come with a few chips. But there was more plate than food . At least fill up the space with salad . Would have been nice. Atmosphere was great, staff and service fantastic. Overall, I had a lovely evening.

What a fantastic place! We were quickly seated and a fresh bowl of water was brought over for the dog, we didn't even need to ask. Food was delicious, something suitable for all the family and they even have a dog menu. Great prices for great quality food. Staff were very friendly, the beer garden was lovely and well decorated too, the whole place had a great atmosphere. Will definitely return next time we are in Cardiff. Thank you for a wonderful dining experience.

Great bar just far enough off the beaten track. Great choice of beers (member of CAMRA) Staff really helpful and food pretty good too. Much better than the crowded bars of the city centre (if that’s what you’re looking for) Really enjoyed the Welsh hospitality 🏴󠁧󠁒󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 and would seek it out when next in the Welsh capital 😁🏴󠁧󠁒󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Christmas meal with friends and the festive cocktails were lovely. However, the festive plant burger was really spicy and it says on the menu clearly "nachos AND chips" but it should've been "or", acording to the waitress. She said "I could ask the kitchen to make you some nachos?" like I should've known it was one or the other, but the whole table had their meals already so I just said don't worry about it. The portion of chips was small and it was Β£15 too so I should've said yes to the nachos! Such a shame πŸ€¦πŸ»β€β™€οΈ

We visited Cardiff a few weeks ago and had one of the best meals of our UK trip at Pen & Wig. The chicken pies were so good...the pastry dome was picture-worthy! The house salad (I added chicken) was a hearty and healthy meal. Highly recommend!!!

A proper pub. Good, friendly service. Good food and drink. Shame about the big TV screens.

We received Excellent service from everyone involved in our large family meal. Booking was easy online, the gents thoroughly enjoyed the real ales that were on offer although the ladies might say we had a few too many. Our food was spot on and the staff even took the time to make a fuss of my daughters dog. A pub as it should be.

Pre booked a table prior to Wales rugby international on 6 Nov 2021. We were made to feel very welcome the moment we walked in. Selection of real ales was exceptional and the food was tasty with quick service. Every staff member was friendly, cheerful and chatty. Great atmosphere before a big game even though the pub was full it didn't appear overcrowded. Will be returning soon.

Love this place. Had a drink and some food. Staff were pleasant. Only moan was that when we went to put the umbrella on the table up it knocked the drinks over as it was so low to the table!

Went for Sunday lunch with 8 of us. Couldn't fault a thing. Generous portions, all freshly cooked. As many Yorkshire puddings, roast potatoes and gravy as you want. Superb value for money, friendly staff, well kept beers and good wine list. Most definitely recommended for a nice Sunday lunch.

Rugby Day! Really good place to come after the game. Stupidly we hadn’t booked but the manager was great and he managed to find us a table. It was very busy with queues at the bar but staff were all on top form and service was great. Food was lovely and served quickly considering how busy it was. We will be booking for the next game!

Great pub with a good selection of real ales and ciders. Friendly staff. I appreciate it's a city centre pub but expensive by Cardiff prices.

I used to love this place years ago. However, on my recent visits, I was served warm cider and had to ask for them to put ice in it just to make it tolerable to drink. The beer garden is however still the best beer garden in the area.

What can i say about this big pub except fabulous. Just off the beaten track so not manic. Many thanks to John for sorting us a table at very short notice. Great atmosphere. Food was excellent and fairly priced. Burgers to die for. Fantastic Range of cask ales from numerous brewers. Will definitely return when next in Cardiff. Absolutely recommended.

Due to a last minute cancellation we ended up having our wedding meal at the Pen and Wig. Leigh was superb and went the extra mile in ensuring our party were looked after. Fab food, great service. Definitely recommend.

I went here for a Sunday roast and it was delicious. The lamb shank, roast potatoes, and veg were perfectly cooked and the gravy was tasty. They have a great range of craft beers and the staff were very friendly and helpful. I'll definitely go back next time I'm in Cardiff.

First time visitor. Booked table 3pm. On arrival told limited Sunday menu (no pork or turkey). Ordered two lamb shanks and one Mushroom Wellington. Food was good for the price. Totally unreasonable to have to wait one hour for the food to be delivered.. Sorry, for that reason I won't be returning....

Always a great atmosphere in the P&W. Food is standard pub food but it’s done well. Great beer garden. Many beer options, quite disappointed the last time as they were all from the same brewery but I think they do change fairly regularly.

Great pub with the best beer garden in Cardiff! The food is fantastic and doesn't cost the earth, and they always have a massive range of ales and ciders. If you're into tasting new beers etc, Pen & Wig is for you! Highly recommend, great service from the staff too 😊

  • 5/5 Sharon H. 1 year ago on Google
You know when you walk into a local pub and it just feels right! Visiting daughter and her Uni mates we sought a local that could accommodate 9 at short notice for food. The staff at the Pen & Wig went out of their way to accommodate us. Lively friendly vibe, food was delivered hot and was great value for money. Highly recommend!!
