I am unfortunately having to write this due to lack of appropriate response from The Healthcock in regards to issues involving a food poisoning incident on 23rd December leaving 6 of our party unwell with suspected norovirus over Christmas as well as sub standard customer service in relation to this and a previous booking. We visited Healthcock on two occasions in two months, unfortunately both occasions have been extremely disappointing. November 2023 - party of 6 - Heathcock was out of food options to cater for a Celiac member of the party (they had prior warning in the booking made 2 weeks prior), meaning this person had no choice of their meal for the evening. We had a drink spilled over a party member by the waitress - no apology, we still had to pay for the drink, later a man behind the bar joked about this to the party, unfortunately this didn't land very well. They then left 5 desserts off the bill, the following day, on noticing this, we called to settle the matter, they did not even thank us for calling to give them the extra £50 we owed them. I responded to their auto email for feedback, very reasonably advising them of our experience, however I believe I was fair and complimentary in the areas where it was deserved. We had good food and despite these bits, had enjoyed our evening - everyone can have an off night right? Unfortunately, we never heard anything back from them in relation to this feedback. This felt a little underwhelming, even an email back to apologise for the spilled drink that we had still paid for would have been something. December 23rd 2023 - party of 14. Christmas Menu. 6 out of 7 people who ate the oysters became unwell on Christmas day with severe diarrhoea and vomiting, unable to keep food and fluids down whilst experiencing fever and fainting episodes. This lasted well into Boxing day. We emailed The Heathcock on Boxing day morning, to advise them of this asking for acknowledgement and for a return phone call (I couldn't get through to them on phone). They did not call me or acknowledge the email. Only doing so after we had already reported to Environmental Health and they had a visit to inspect their kitchen. They then emailed, blaming their supplier. Which in essence is attempting to absolve themselves of the obligation they have to serve food that is safe to consume. Environmental health are now involved and are investigating the food poisoning issues (they had advised us it is likely norovirus from the oysters served). Unfortunately their email of apology leaves much to be desired in addressing the extent of upset, discomfort and disruption caused by eating at the restaurant. Unfortunately, it is in keeping with the previous communications we have had with The Heathcock... overall absent. Their lack of care for customer experience is negligent and I have ongoing concerns about their food hygiene standards. I will not be returning to the restaurant and would advise everyone to also steer clear. There are so many restaurants in Cardiff that provide great food with great customer experience, not returning here will be of no detriment to us. Unfortunately the damage is done.

Claims to be unpretentious pub food that you can have after a dog walk. This is false, at least I've never spent £25 for a small piece of fish with no sides and considered it unpretentious. You enter through the first half, which is a pub, looks very pleasant, crowded and noisy - typical pub. The second half is the restaurant, which has several tables set out and is a bit quieter. My partner mostly enjoyed his food, I unfortunately did not. We shared bread to start, the focaccia and sourdough were lovely. He had arancini to start - very good. I had scallops - too much sauce for two small scallops in my opinion, and the whole dish was covered in raw pips, which were bitter and had an unpleasant texture, so I had to pick them out. For mains, my partner had the fish, which was cooked well, but the red sauce smear it came with was bitter and sour. I had the ricotta and butternut pasta roll, it was tasteless. Had to ask for salt and pepper, it was so bland. It also needed a sauce, it was dry. The confit potato had a lovely crisp texture, but again was bland. The garlic new potatoes had no garlic, again, bland! We shared a creme brulee for dessert which was really good. Creamy and rich, and the sugar topping was crisp and light. The staff were very friendly. However I did ask for more water with the appetizer, which was forgotten, I had to ask again with dessert. The waiter then opened us a bottle of sparkling water which was not what we asked for. The bill was also wrong, we were overcharged by £30 because a heathcock cassoulet was added - which we did not order. This was corrected after I spotted it, good thing I checked! Overall disappointing with a few exceptions. Glad we tried it, but it did not live up to the hype at all.

First time coming here, thought we would give it a try after seeing it on the Michelin website. Staff were all really welcoming and very knowledgeable. Food was brilliant. Great atmosphere. Will definitely be returning.

I would rate the Heathcock between 4 and 5 star, the customer service was spot-on. Very friendly staff willing to help the customer what ever their needs were. I was here for a wedding and we had a separate room from the main customer. There was around 30 of us all having snacks, starters, mains and sweets and this was delivered with great accomplishment. The taste and the delivery of each meal just made me wanting more each dish looked like a piece of art. We came from Scotland for this wedding and iam glad we did,if we are ever this way again we will definitely stopping at the Heathcock.

Great meal at The Heathcock tonight. Marinated oysters were incredible. Starters very well prepared and mains exquisite. We finished with a choc moose, cheese board and some port. A very enjoyable night. Thanks to the team. We'll be back xx

Went to the Heathcock for a meal with my partner and parents this week and couldn’t believe how terrible the mains were after hearing great things about the restaurant. All four starters were tasty and well presented, however the mains were awful. It was as if the starters and mains were cooked my totally different chefs! My main (Butternut squash ricotta rotolo) was disgusting! The pasta was undercooked and the whole meal was overloaded with salt that I could hardly eat it. Everyone on the table tried it and we all said it was the worst dish any of us had ever eaten in a restaurant. The other mains were a sharing slow cooked Venison that was completely flavourless and the plaice & eel main was mediocre. Such a shame as the starters were fabulous. We were compensated with 50% taken off the mains but definitely won’t go again or recommend. Ladies toilets also needed a good dust and wipe down which was a bit grim.

Don't normally write reviews, but given the price of this place I feel compelled to. Booked for Sunday lunch as have had many great times here in the past, and don't mind paying a high price if the whole experience reflects this. Unfortunately, today's experience failed to meet with previous experience. Firstly, the table we were allocated should not be offered to anyone as it is extremely close to the adjoining table, meaning you have to disturb fellow diners in order to squeeze (literally) into your seat. Whilst the pork dish was fairly decent, the lamb arrived cooked vary rare. This was not advertised as such, otherwise I would have asked for it to be cooked to my liking when order was taken. Having said that, I immediately informed the server that I would like the lamb to be cooked more, which she obliged, and returned with the lamb slightly more cooked. Both meals were covered in a gravy which was very overpowering in taste (salty, thin and not very nice). This would have been better served in a separate pouring dish, which we discussed with the server on payment. He server admitted that the gravy is quite strong, mqybe she could have said this when we ordered, so we could have had the option for it to be served separately. Roast potatoes were overcooked, and were very difficult to cut they were so hard. The bill was incorrect in that the cheese board (which was delicious) was not included. We did inform them of this and a correct bill was delivered. In hindsight, we should have informed staff that our table was not fit for purpose but I hope they kindly take this under consideration now for future diners. All in all, I feel this was an overpriced dining experience for what we got. Sadly, I wont be rushing back anytime soon.

Came for the first time and overall had a great visit. Generally the food was lovely but all of the main courses were dry and could do with more sauce. Two of our party carried on and ate their mains but two of party struggled and ended up sending their mains back. The rotolo pasta was very dry containing almost no sauce, with two pasta rolls on the plate which made them so dry they were inedible. The venison had a fricassee of mushrooms/onions as its sauce, but it was more mushrooms/onions than actual sauce. The venison was plentiful and very well cooked but as it was all veg and no liquid in the fricassee it meant the dish was pretty much hunks of meat with no sauce. The waitress spoke to the kitchen and asked for more sauce for the venison but we were just given another bowl of mushrooms which again didn’t address the dryness. From a service perspective two of the mains were adjusted on the bill which was appreciated as we couldn’t eat them, but for £50 a head for 3-courses there are better food options in the city.

Pretty disappointing lunch with my wife and both our parents visiting Cardiff. Waited nearly 2 hours from arrival for our mains, had to go up to the bar to order more drinks, and when it did finally arrive the steak pie was overcooked. The rest of our mains were fine and we knew the sharing plates take a little longer, but 1hr 50 mins was quite frustrating especially to be overcooked, then paying that sort of price. Had been recommended by a friend but we won't be back.

To be fair all 4 starters (mushroom arrancini, crispy pork cheek, gnocchi with octopus and welsh rarebit) were delicious and well presented. However the mains were pretty atrocious. The butternut squash rotolo was described as "the worst restaurant meal I've ever eaten", the plaice and eel was more of a starter size ( in itself not a problem but small portions need to pack a punch in terms of flavour, but this certainly didn't) and the sharing, slow cooked venison was mediocre and tasteless at best. All 3 dishes were so salty no other flavours would have stood a chance. We did complain and 50% was taken off the main course prices, but the experience is simply not good enough for somewhere with the Heathcock's reputation. It was as if the starters and mains were from 2 entirely different restaurants.

Visited for the first time based on good reviews for lunch. Food standard was very good and we will definitely would come back. The lunch menu itself needed to have choices that we're more suitable for a lunch time as it was very rich and heavy and also expensive - My main course was £23 without sides. It was excellent but more of a dinner choice. The front of house environment and standards could do with some more work, loo floor was soaking and the dining area lacked atmosphere (lighting?) overall, recommended based on the great food - a bit more attention to detail and it would be an easy 5 star place

Great local in local Cardiff area. Good beers. Host needs to be a little cooler about people singing when he's agreed to a male voice choir having an afterglow there,

Lovely pub, we visited for Sunday lunch. First time ever going we were seated in the old skittle room, it's now converted into a restaurant area and is very nice. The food was extremely tasty probably best bit of pork I've had. Would recommend.

Wow, what an absolute food dream! The Heathcock is bar the best restaurant, dining and food experience I have had in all my travels and entire life. How lucky I am to have stumbled across this hidden gem in a Google search. Walking into the venue, it had a relaxed, warm and cosy UK pub vibe. The dining room, though, felt elegant and charming, which matched the food being served. Although travelling solo, I booked in for the Sample Tasting Menu and what a truly delightful and memorable experience it was. Each dish consisted of the best and highest quality ingredients, which all married together perfectly to create mouthwatering creations that had me unable to put down my spoon and fork. Each dish was fresh and flavoursome, and you could tell a great deal of thought, love, and care had gone into making them from scratch. The service was equally exceptional, and it felt like you were in a 5-star restaurant but in the comfort of a home. The Sample Tasting Menu was every bit worth the cost and it's still food I dream of often. If I could, I would jump back onto a plane to Wales for this food alone. A huge congratulations and my gratitude to the team at The Heathcock for creating a food menu of dreams.

We ate at the restaurant and were served amazing food! Everything was great, from the ox heart skewers to the stuffed rabbit leg to the Eton mess. Definitely worth the short bus ride out of the city centre!

Amazing choice and clarity for coeliacs, sharing options are great value! We were seated outside and were allowed to order from the restaurant menu which was much appreciated. Only downside was it got very busy so we were forgotten about a bit as the evening went on. Decided to pay and not get dessert

Definitely a destination pub, but take the salt pot out the kitchen! Reading some of the reviews I keep reading over & over again about too much salt in the food. Sadly we had the same issue resulting in a reduction in our bill. However ...... full marks for lovely helpful front of house staff, an exciting menu (please take on board my salt comment!) and wonderful atmosphere. We loved your community vibe too. We'll definitely be back - to check on sodium levels! - and also try our luck at the pub quiz and sample the beer. Well done, and good luck to The Heathcock 👍

Sad to say that our experience was seemingly one shared by a number of diners here. The saltiness of the food really did render it unpalatable. The wine was decent and the serving staff good. But the food was ultimately let down by quite ridiculous levels of salt in a number of the dishes.

Nice beer and nice ambience. We only stopped for a drink, but they have a restaurant too, with what looked like a very good menu (a bit different than the norm - quirky imaginative dishes). I don't think there's parking there though (you will need to check). There was a good crowd in there when we went at 5:30pm on a Saturday.

Lovely pub and beer garden, great selection of ales and ciders. The food is very special, you'll be pushed to find better food in Cardiff. Recently had (amongst other things) the homemade gnocchi with mushrooms... still thinking about it! Yum.

Very nice place only for me, a not huge drinker, I enjoyed the food but think this place would be best for those who appreciate the large range of wine available. The food was very good but slightly too rich for me overall. Perhaps 3 stats is a little harsh as everything was good just not quite my cup of tea but most people will love this place. Service was exceptional and clearly a very popular place.

So delicious! I had 2 different lamb dishes, both amazing, and the bites of venison and duck I tried were to die for as well. Also the chips are perfection.

Never had food there, though excellent choice of ales that often change, really nice welcoming pub atmosphere inside and great outdoor seating. A really nice change from the standard soulless "£10 for Burger and a pint" Brains pubs that sadly dominate Cardiff. Only slight negative is that it does seem to take quote long to get served.. maybe they've recruited since though.

Excellent menu with fantastic wines and great service. All food is Michelin star grade. I recommend ordering a few plates and sharing so you can have a taste of everything. My wife and I had 8 plates including dessert. These ranged from pan fried Hake to Crispy Pigs Cheek... All were excellent. The wine they serve is European and reasonably priced for the establishment that you're in, I paid £24 for a bottle of white but remember its in a Michelin star restaurant.

Service here is fantastic... slight shame for the food though. Tastes amazing, and it's cooked to perfection, but I think if they included a small side it would be the correct portion for most people. The customers it attracts there is great, say its local customers from the area of Llandaff and professionals looking for a nice meal out. If you're into a good safe pub with a range of craft beers, this is a place which is worth considering.

Visited this place with friends to try it out. This is a popular venue so make sure you boom in advance if there's a few of you. A few of the menu items may seem unfamiliar to the average diner, but be a little adventurous and you won't be disappointed. I tried the duck liver parfait (something I was unsure I would like) and thoroughly savoured every mouthful. The portions are generous and filling. There's a good selection of drinks on offer. The staff are very knowledgeable and eager to make sure you have a great experience. Can't wait to go back.

Came across this brilliant gastro pub online - thought we would try it after the rugby! Friendly, warm welcome and great service throughout. Delicious Welsh lamb shank filled Ravioli in a lovely meaty broth with mint - moreish lamb croquette type things with a superb aioli type dip! Then pork belly & roast duck mains..with rhubarb souffle & glazed vanilla tart to finish ! A genuine feast which flowed seamlessly...Will definitely come again !

I booked a table for the Champagne and Oyster Bar at the Heathcock in advance. Me and my partner arrived for our reservation and were taken upstairs to our table only after seated to be told the Champagne and Oyster Bar had run out of oysters, which was the reason we booked to try the oysters. We were told they were all given away to diners having the tasting menu. So that was very disappointing, I wish we had been told beforehand that there wouldn’t be enough oysters so I could have rearranged our booking or at least asked in advance if we would want to have any for our booking. We had already made the effort to come to the Heathcock so thought we would just stay and try the rest of the menu as we were hungry. I ordered a glass of the Pommery Brut which was very nice but not a cold as it should have been. We also ordered a carafe of the Primitivo which was excellent. We tried the selection of Charcuterie and Cheese which came with bread and chutney, Welsh Rarebit, and Crispy Lamb Belly which I can’t fault they were all very tasty. The waiter who served us was very friendly and attentive and also gave us a discount on the bill as the Lamb was late. Overall we left disappointed because as stated above we booked the Champagne and Oyster bar expecting to be able to order oysters.

It was so salty it burned my and my mother in-laws mouth! We ordered squid, ravioli and pig’s cheek as our starters, as well as sourdough and oysters as appetisers. We got our drinks and waited. 40 mins after a women appeared apologised and said that they lost our order and forgot about us. Because of that the starters and dessert will be on the house. She also said that by the time they realised that the oysters and cauliflower were gone. We asked to get us our ordered bread which was cold and stale, but overall fine. Then 15 mins later starters appeared. Squid was so over salted it burned. I didn’t even finished it. My in-laws had ravioli and those were undercooked (not al dente, but undercooked). The only fine one was pig’s cheek. When plates were collected the waitress didn’t even ask how was the food. Next the main course came. This time the fish was over salted! My mother in law couldn’t eat it and this time I voiced this issue. They promised to remove fish from the bill. The rest 3 of us had porchetta and it could be nice if it wasn’t so salty as well! At this point we were hungry so we eat it. Even though our desserts were promised to be complimentary, we decided that we had enough. The bill arrived with all starters in and cauliflower that we didn’t get and the waitress stated that the service wouldn’t be added to the bill. We had to ask to amend the final bill which they did and I therefore attach to this review. P.S. Women washroom didn’t have hand soap nor toilet paper. All of that was so surprising as we went here for lunch before and it was lovely. Nothing overly impressive but tasty and fresh. No idea what happened this time.

Very nice food. You really need more information about what is in each item. We ended up ordering about 4 x the quantity of potatoes we needed. I just hate any waste. Pork cheeks were totally delicious. Corgette flower was better than you might expect. Hake I as perfect.

Good service. The menu is creative & inspiring. The vanilla plum soufflé was very tasty. Just a small point, the Chef there used a bit of more salt in the main dishes. Can order and ask for less salt.

Had dinner reservation at the Heathcock for family of 6. Sat evening so was very busy, restaurant is through the bar area at the back of the building which is a little awkward when the bar is crowded. And there's no parking and just a small adjacent side road, so plan ahead if you are driving. Once seated the service was efficient, friendly and helpful, food arrived in good time with some delicious homemade breads offered while you wait. Some dishes had sold out so we ordered Hake, Hanger Steak, Pork chop, Welsh rarebit and star of the show whole seabass baked in salt. Sides of new potatoes and chunky chips. All were delicious and enjoyed by everyone. Desserts were creme caramel, creme brulee and lemon tart. Again all perfectly cooked and tasty. First time at the Heathcock, service and food was great and I enjoyed it very much. Definitely worth a visit if you're looking for something above the ordinary.
