It doesn't take long to work out the team here is passionate about their craft. They are a bar that focuses on the actual cocktail and their ingredients. I felt very looked after as they wanted to get you the right cocktail. Don't come here if you want a flamboyant peacock cocktail that is all show and no substance. The tunes, were also very good.

Best selection of proper drinks in Cardiff central. Sophisticated, educated and friendly efficient service from people who really know their stuff for discerning grown ups.

I visited Cardiff for several days and ended going here both nights because it was so good. The cocktails are not only fantastic, but unique and often made with homemade and locally sourced mixers. Liam and Alex gave incredible service and are the most knowledgeable bartenders I've ever met. Cannot recommend this place enough!

Staff were very pleasant tonight even with the bar being busy nonstop with our large company working party there.. be it for cocktails or a stiff drink or even a simple lemonade, quality & a smile 😊.. The music was nice but a bit too loud for a bar, couldn't hear person standing next to one another... Will recommend a visit on a regular non corporate party day/evening 🙂

Brilliant experience. Fantastic atmosphere, great service from the staff and amazing cocktails. Expensive drinks but worth it for the quality and the ambiance. If recommend getting a bowl of their super large olives with your drinks as they make for an excellent pallet cleanser. Also, unless your plan on getting hammered don't order too many drinks too quickly as they are very potent! Highly recommended night out.

HUGE WARNING! There have been a fair few 1 star reviews about staff stealing from customers, which have seemingly been removed. I know this as there was one posted yesterday, and the week before, as I had personally seen them, and experienced the same issue myself! This behaviour is HUGELY ALARMING in itself! This will be reported to google, as they are falsifying reviews. BE WARNED

Fantastic Old Fashioned, great selection of beers, friendly staff and great music.

Me and two friends visited Pennyroyal on a very hot eve in June. The owner served and he was super helpful, making personalised recommendations - which turned out to be SO delicious. He also shewed away some blokes who were making unwelcome advances, without being asked, which was so so nice and unusual. You should absolutely go here for cocktails in Cardiff 😍

Amazing drinks, the bartender Josh was very knowledgeable about the alcohol they are serving, very friendly and helpful, atmosphere great, banging music to go with it, defo will be returning.

We had an absolutely brilliant night at Pennyroyal last Saturday. We had a booking from 9-11pm but luckily for us there was a cancellation and we were able to stay until closing! The cocktails were amazing and actually tasted like alcohol, rather than the sugary, watered down ones you often get served 🙄. I really loved the effort they had put into their menu and liked reading about the origin of the different cocktails on offer (an extensive list!) The waitress who served us was lovely, really friendly (I didn't catch her name but it said Mummy on the receipt, and I think she was wearing a rust coloured shirt with black trousers?) as were all the other members of staff who seemed genuinely happy to be there...even though it was a super busy bank holiday Saturday, and only the 2nd week bars were able to open indoors! One of our party doesn't drink alcohol and when we asked the waitress she said they would happily make mocktail versions of any of the cocktails for her 😊. All in a fab evening! Thanks 👍

The waiter at the pastor restaurant sent me over for a drink, and, well, this was an excellent choice… The bartender was super on top of things and very accommodating! Highly recommended…

Changed over the years. More money making than the atmosphere. Staff are great but it’s not longer a bespoke experience. Just come in, have a beer and a cheap shot. Play pool and enjoy. Shame!!

A great little bar, very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable staff. Tried a few Japanese whiskies on their recommendation and we had a lovely time ....... but! We went there as it was advertised as a "speakeasy", its not! It's a lovely bar but not the speakeasy atmospheres we were looking for.

Lovely grown up cocktail bar. Staff are hugely knowledgeable and will make you whatever you want, but don't skip the menu which has some really interesting stuff in it. Alex made me a superb caperberry martini, exactly what I wanted even though I didn't know it. Will definitely be back

Amazing cocktails, we were a group of 4 and ended up trying 13 cocktails amongst us, only posted photos for a couple as I want to leave some surprises, each were incredible, and still so many more cocktails left on the menu to try next time we visit. Our server Ben was wonderful, telling us the story that came with each cocktail with wit and panache. If you are in Cardiff definitely go here!

Popped in by chance service first class the gin and tonic is probably the best I have ever had bar staff even brought the bottle out and sat down to chat about the gin ..excellent thank you

I have been to PennyRoyal countless times and never has the standard of service or drinks dropped below perfect. Alex the owner is one of the most knowledgeable barmen I have ever come across and is always willing to give some background on the liqueur or origination of the drink itself and will cater to any taste or style, whether it's on the menu or not. The bar environment is comfortable and relaxed, with a real vibrant vibe in the evenings. If you're looking for quality drinks, I truly could not recommend a place more highly in Cardiff!

Best cocktail place in Cardiff. If you love good booze - these booze wizards will help you have a great evening. Very informal place. You can wear jeans, you can wear a hoodie, none of this judgemental pseudo-fancy cocktail bar vibe that I absolutely hate. Also very decent music.

It's not the cheapest, but it's 100% worth what they charge. All my best nights out end here for a nightcap. Ask them what they want to make and drink that. You won't regret it.

A pretty woke and forward-thinking bar with incredibly nice staff. Just reading the house rules alone will give you a good impression of the kind of place you’re in. Drinks were good too

So I booked a back room in Pennyroyal about 6 weeks prior to a 21st birthday celebration, I was excited to have the back room for my friends and I so I went in a few days prior to check it out and they said we couldn’t go in which was fine, until we went to our booking several days later only to be told we can’t use the room as the weather had “damaged the ceiling”. We were told this AFTER we arrived and we’re given some tables at the back of the bar which was not at all private, they said at some point they darken the lights and louden the music but the lights kept being weirdly turned up and down and the music was too much of a mix between genres (which makes it difficult to want to dance to the songs). I’m mainly so disappointed that I wasn’t informed prior to the booking that the back room was not in use for now. To make it worse, we haven’t had severe rain in about a week which means they’ve had plenty of time to contact me and let me know. I emailed during the week just to double check everything was ok but received no response, and just an automated email about my booking the night before. Aside from this, the drinks were incredibly expensive and of course just filled with ice, some of us couldn’t even fit our whole drink into one cup because their cups are tiny. The place is a cool concept and the staff are lovely, but I won’t be going back in a hurry due to the disappointment of no communication.
