Friendly local under new management. Doing meals again (new improved menu) Great local with a good welcome. Landlady has worked hard to revamp the decor in challenging economic circumstances. Lovely pint here too

Lovely looking place on the outside, but lack-luster food and impersonal service on the inside. My husband and I both ordered the Roast Beef. I sent mine back when I found a ball of stuffing under the turkey thinking they’d made a mistake - turns out it actually was thinly sliced roast beef all along which had acquired some stuffing and two pigs in blanket along the way. Guess I should be grateful for the freebies - Someone pass the salt and pepper please.

Sit where??!!! Called in for a couple of beers. We were told we that all the tables were reserved for Sunday lunch. What about the people coming in for a couple of beers (remember, you are a pub, NOT a restaurant). This reserving tables in a pub is getting out of hand. We were told we could sit at a "booth around the back." No wonder it was free, it was disgusting. We had to sit by all the detritus of the pub. (see picture). We were paying customers. Whatever happened to first come, first served?!! Thank you for your response...However, it's obvious that you have not read my review properly as you have not addressed the issues raised. Never mind.

Visited this little gem with the family last week and was made to SO welcomed, the staff could not do enough for us, and the manager was a ray of sunshine. The food was probably the best we had from a pub. I can’t recommend this the pub highly enough. 5 Stars plus.

Previous experiences are excellent. Unfortunately called in today for a Sunday Lunch. Roast looked lovely but stone cold. Asked for extra gravy, hoping to warm it up... also cold. Nothing worse than a cold roast unfortunately. We told the member of staff (who was lovely). And were offered it to be warmed up and a finger stuck in the gravy to test temperature. Refused & asked for a refund as warmed up roasties & yorkshire pud etc are not good. Shame.

Had a lovely afternoon here on Xmas eve. Staff have been working tirelessly to keep on top of demand. Great atmosphere, busy but not raucous.

Haven't visited Llandaff for a while so thought I'd take my friends out for a fun pub lunch yesterday. The pub has had new management since I was there last and the new bar staff are really friendly, knowledgeable about the area and the food and drinks available. We went on a Sunday so roast was only option, however there was a choice of beef or turkey, I opted for turkey and was suprised that I was able to add extras to enjoyed the Yorkshire puddings with my dinner. The food was tasty, plentiful and had a home cooked taste and look to it. We are coming back down in two weeks to try out the weekdays menu, the choices looked really good and I think my mouths watering at the burgers already. Well done black lion, you get a thumbs up from me!

Started off promising. Staff are friendly and courteous, the welcome was brilliant. Unfortunately, the food was a little on the poor side and wouldn't tempt me to return. Coupled with another customer who was clearly drunk and swearing down the phone at 2pm, this isn't the sort of place for me.

Visited this pub on Friday for a meal with my family and i can proudly say that this is by far one of the best pub meals I've had in a very long time. The staff were extremely welcoming and so helpful and the meal was amazing. I would highly recommend the burgers and the presentation was beautiful. I will certainly be coming back to this lovely little pub!

Visited with my friend, had the best cod and chips I’ve had in a very long time, the batter was delicious, crispy and super light, fish was tasty and chips, amazing. 10/10 to the chef, looking forward to returning very soon.

Made a booking for this pub on wednesday for Friday to have a few drinks and a meal with my friends. The food was lovely and the staff were great! Would highly recommend this pub to anyone looking to have a quick but lovely meal along with a lovely old school atmosphere. The hanging flower baskets outside make it feel like summer time! 5 stars!

Stumbled across this lovely bar last week with friends, the place is spacious spotless and very inviting, the staff were friendly attentive and polite, and the food was as delightful as the fabulous hanging baskets outside. We look forward to visiting it again soon. 5 star ⭐️

You can't argue with the prices - £2.90 for the IPA. The decor has seen better days and the toilets are a throwback. If you like your pubs slightly rundown then this is for you, the antithesis of a gastropub. The welcome was friendly enough

Very nice friendly lady behind the bar! Decent local ales and tasty, reasonably priced grazing plates (we had cauliflower wings, loaded fries & macaroni cheese, 3 for £10). Not a super characterful pub but a pleasant enough traditional boozer.

Probably the best place I've ever been too. No other pub can top this experience. I've never been so happy, drunk and accepted in my life. Atmosphere is welcoming but lacking air conditioning. But I can score any lower as this place is amazing and if I died I would want to be brought here as a form or purgatory. Would recommend, also the food is nice. Good job

Had the wonderful experience of meeting Jade the barmaid. Full of happiness and made my day, couldn't ask for a better experience. Would recommend to anyone. Any problems, ask for Jade! Above all that, the landlady, Jen runs a wonderful pub with fantastic staff. Pubs are all about good people and this pub is full of them!

I go to The Black Lion on a regular basis and have to say I feel extremely welcome. Jen, and 'The Team' have welcomed me into their family and its amazing. I would recommend The Black Lion to anyone in the area, indeed I often am accompanied by two of my friends who also feel that its a great place. Jen really cares for the customers that come into the pub and her attitude towards us proves this.

Staff were very friendly! Food was very tasty with good portion sizes but some dishes were not available, and the wait was a bit long. Great value for what you got!

Visited for steak last night and I cannot rate it highly enough. We have visited on a few occasions for drinks but decided to try dinner and it was all cooked to perfection. Staff are always great, we are always made to feel welcome! X

Just popped in for a quick drink. Plenty of people eating Sunday lunch which looked lovely. My only criticism is that it is in desperate need of a refurbishment.

Had food here last night with my family, visiting my daughter in uni. Thoroughly enjoyed can highly recommend the fish and chips, and the scampi. Lovely atmosphere. Lovely clean pub friendly staff. We will definitely be back! Thanks all. 😊

Great place, the service was amazing and friendly. The food took time but was more than worth it, portions were good as well and the prices are very reasonable. Cosy and charming ambience. Their beer glaze sauce is to die for!

Great family friendly pub. Food was amazing 4 of us ate and there is not one negative thing any of us have to say about it. Staff were amazing !! On leaving we noticed that from this weekend they are starting to serve Sunday Roasts so we booked a table straight away as if its a good as our meal today we know we will not be disappointed Well worth a visit

Reviews are important. I chose the Black Lion on other’s feedback and I’m very pleased we went there today. The roast dinner was lovely and fresh, the 2 course lunch price was a welcoming £10 and I will certainly be taking the family there again! Should also mention that the place was clean as you’d expect and the staff were friendly too! Thank you for a lovely Sunday roast! Trust me, not all pubs in a chain meet the chain’s standards. Manager clearly runs a tight ship here in The Black Lion. Well done!

The Fish & Chips.....omg! I've done The Ivy, Ramsey, Marco etc and this crispy coating, succulent fish and perfect chips rates possibly above all! Great presentation and lovely staff! 👏👏👏

Good old Brains pub, unfortunately the bench seating around the lounge could do with upgrading , looked a little stained and worn.

On arriving we received a warm welcome from bar staff. Food was served quickly and well presented . Cooked beautifully snd enjoyed every mouthful. Can’t wait until my next visit

I have been to the Black Lion a number of times and it is a great local pub and I will definitely visit again. This visit was just a bit difficult as there were quite a few very loud groups inside and no seating. We sat outside with the smokers and it was chilly and smoky! Just one of those days.

Was an excellent pub famous for its shove halfpenny and bar skittles. Had to search for a clean table for 4 even though not busy. Found one and sat down then asked to move to a other table to keep that side of the room clean! So sent back to have our drinks from a choice covered in slopes.. I used to drink here with dad..nursing staff from Rookwood Hospital used to collect wheel chair patients and push them back up the hill on closing....wont be back

A Brains pub in a traditional setting with a mock Tudor exterior, located on the outskirts of Cardiff. Cheap ales on tap with food served until early evening.

Popped in for a quick beer on the way home, staff very friendly, beer good. Food menu looks good value. Will pop in again and again.
