Very welcoming and comfortable stay again, my 3rd time at this hotel. Beautiful breakfast, plenty of choice and really friendly staff. Ideal spot for everything you wish to do in Cardiff.

They have policy of not letting guests into their room early, even if its ready, unless you pay £20 for each hour before 15:00 and this isn't publicised on any booking web site or their own. Plus the pictures don't show the two large pubs over which it resides.

Good central location, nice dining and bar area. The breakfast was fantastic (hence the score!). But the hotel is a little tired. We had a ‘deluxe’ room but whilst it was big - it had an old leather sofa with a throw over it. The bathroom was lacking light as only two dim bulbs in there. Finally the staff on the desk whilst they weren’t rude, they weren’t very welcoming either. This was our third stay here, but probably our last.

Probably the most comfortable hotel bed I've ever had, and I travelled for a living staying in hiltons on cruise ships and premier inns etc for years. Upon arriving, the bar kinda reminds me of a working men's club, but it was immaculately clean. The rooms are nice and very homely, not a sterile style some end up to be.

Stayed here with my son on the weekend and wow . The hotel is very impressive as soon as we walked through the door and the staff could not do enough for us. The cinema room was amazing we are definitely going to book this hotel again.

Good value, well positioned in central Cardiff not far from millennium stadium, castle or international arena. Staff lacked interaction and personality and weren't very engaging. Bathroom was great , shower door wouldn't close and soaked floor and controls were temperamental. Breakfast was excellent, self service but loads of choice available, very good 👍 Would stay here again despite my negative comments

Staff were lovely and attentive. The breakfast was plentiful, fresh and delicious. They catered very well with my gluten free diet. Would definitely stay at the Royal again

While the location of this hotel is ideal and its decor particularly in the lobby has a majesty about it, the bedroom in which we stayed was not ideal. While superficially pleasant with a spacious bed and adequate bathroom, the walls were paper thin, and the floorboards like infuriated banshees creaked throughout the night when our neighbours frequented their toilet. This led to a irrecoverable loss of sleep and rest impacting my next morning. I will say the staff were pleasant in our interactions and highly professional but stay again I shall not.

Strange shaped bedroom, but excellent staff care, great breakfast, bar open on our way to bed, very fair tariff considering overlooks late night revelries of St Mary Street. All together, a great city centre hotel - will return!

This is not a 4 star hotel as the reviews would have you believe. If you are used to staying in chain hotels like Marriott, Hyatt, Hilton, etc, you will agree with me. I would steer clear of this. I stayed here two nights and will not recommend this hotel or stay here again. You absolutely get what you pay for here. The cheap price is for a reason. The best way to describe this hotel is "fine"... As others mentioned, the exterior of the building honestly is terrifying. It is so dirty, and looks neglected. There are also lots of homeless people in front of the building that are often yelling and it makes it uncomfortable to walk alone to the hotel. The hotel is not accessible at all, you need to go up a fight of stairs to get to the main entrance, and down a flight of stairs to even access the lift, so those with mobility issues, I would not stay here. The interior is straight up dated, and the noise travels easily because I assume there is no insulation between rooms. You can hear your neighbours open and close their doors. Every step you take on the floor creaks, and the mattress springs are so loud. Also the mattress are very soft, so be warned. The king beds are actually two twins pushed together. Reviews that mention a fridge and robes, this was not something in our room. The room is very basic. It is clean, but thats about where the positive point stop. Windows dirty, shower takes forever to heat up... Those that mention a good breakfast, again I have to disagree. The room breakfast is in is the most dated one in the building. The cold items and cereal are good, but the fried eggs have a rock-hard yolk and just sit under a hot lamp. The mushrooms are just boiled and floating in water, the tomatoes tinned, and the coffee is honesty undrinkable. The staff is all over the map. Some are very polite and courteous (blonde woman), but then others are rude and will contradict their colleagues (male, British). One told me I could eat my lunch in the bar, and then another told me I could not. I am a guest and no other guests were in the bar, so I ate my lunch there anyway. The ONLY good thing about the hotel is the location. It is very central and most restaurants, bars, attractions, and train station are walkable.

Nice place, just a bit worn down and seen better days. Solid receptionists, helped in any way they could. Location is also great as you're in the middle of the city

Beautiful hotel in centre of Cardiff. The lifts weren't working during our stay, and the hotel contacted us prior to us the option of cancellation if we wished. Rooms were clean and equipped with the necessities, such as toiletries, towels, tea/coffee. The bar lacked a bit of atmosphere, and breakfast was available at added cost. We opted for breakfast elsewhere, so we were unable to rate the breakfast

Reception is located on the second floor so it's either steps up or steps down to the lift. This lift only goes.to the reception then a separate lift to rooms. Wheelchair access is available via rear entrance but not greatly signposted. Rooms ok but dimly lit. No fan in bathroom to take steam away, again dim lighting. Good choice of food for breakfast. 3 toasters set at different temperatures but none fast cooking and toast always undercooked (we tried them all). Be aware of how you approach the cooked breakfast bar as this weekend they had a male staff member on who followed you making sure you put the cutlery / tongs back correctly and huffed and threw his arms in air if not. Female member of breakfast staff was excellent and nothing too much trouble, even moving tables so that all 6 of us could be seated together. Hotel located on main bar strip so quite noisy if you had a room on the front of the hotel. But ideal if using this hotel as a base for a night out. Does have a small bar and plenty of seating which is manned by the reception staff. Reception staff were all helpful and friendly.

What a fabulous short break we've just had at this beautiful hotel... From the outside it doesn't look very inspiring, but as soon as you step inside you are transported into a world of class and elegance. The decor is beautiful and warm, the staff friendly and helpful, and the room had everything we could possibly need... And don't start me on the breakfasts... We ate so much we didn't need to eat again until the evening... We no longer need to try different hotels when we stay in Cardiff, because from now on this will be our go to venue...

Comfortable and pretty good breakfast, but you have to get there early, or nothing is left. We stayed longer than we expected but they accommodated that easily. You would think being so much in the center, it would be loud inside, but they have two sets of windows, which really helped.

First time staying at the hotel. Room was fine but both shower and sinks were blocked so having a swim whilst having a shower is not ideal. Weird smell through reception too which was off putting

Lovely, helpful staff. Our room had the issue with the floor being not vacuumed and sticky. The shower temperature dial was not fitted to the wall properly but besides that Everything else was spotless. Slept like a baby.

All the employees I encountered were polite, helpful and efficient. Entering the building at the front door you are confronted with a lot of steps, several flights just to get to reception. Enter via Westgate as there is a lift to the 2nd floor where you'll find the reception area, bar & the breakfast room. Check in was quick & simple and the reception staff were welcoming and polite. I was on the 5th floor, a corner room that had good views. The room was adequate but not good quality. The furniture was stained scratched and looked like it was made from plastic. There was a folding plastic table lamp which part of the base had melted. I could hear everything going on in the next room and the room adjacent to mine could see in, which meant that the curtain next to the door had to be closed. There was no information pack in the room. Only the fire regulations on the back of the door. The tea & coffee tray was in the wardrobe & the kettle was hard wired which meant steam engulfed the wardrobe. The cups needed cleaning, my guess is they were wiped clean with a pillow case. The doors also made it extremely difficult to make a drink inside the wardrobe. The lights next to the door flickered when on. The bathroom was dull and lacked good lighting. There was single use plastic cups instead of glasses. The bin lid was also crushed. The breakfast room opened late, although the chef did see me and apologised. I had to rush breakfast because of this as I had a coach to catch. The breakfast itself was excellent with a good choice. Although the plate warmer was not functioning and the plates where cold. After breakfast on day 2 the lift wasn't working and I had to walk up to the 5th floor. The location was great, close to the train station and minutes walk from the shopping & touristic area. I do not think this hotel is value for money.

Lovely staff at the hotel, extremely helpful and friendly. Rooms clean and bed comfortable. Nice selection of fare at breakfast. Can be a bit noisy if you are on one of the lower floors at night due to its central location.

Our triple room was surprisingly large, very clean with extremely comfortable beds. The buffet breakfast was good with plenty of choice, including gluten free bread for my wife. About a 10 minute walk from Cardiff Central train station made it a good location for our stopover.

A nice hotel with friendly staff - stayed there for a couple of nights. Functional rooms with a hairdryer, iron & ironing board which is always useful when on a business trip. Tea/coffee tray& kettle can be found in the wardrobe. A rather basic breakfast - some items, such as hot foods not served/brought out until later though. Also need to ask for gluten-free option in advance as not always available on demand.

We stayed as part of a large party which included a small baby. The staff were all very accommodating. The hotel is well located in the city centre, but will admit there was some noise from the street overnight. Access to the hotel was somewhat compromised by there not being keyfob access at the rear (accessible entrance) door, but the team on reception were quick to respond to the intercom. The room was of a generous proportion and the shower was great. The á la carte/self-service breakfast was good quality and the team were intuitive to our needs. Overall, it was a very good stay.

A beautifully decorated hotel, warm, cosy with friendly staff in a very central location and at a reasonable price. A warm bedroom, comfortable beds, plenty of drawers & wardrobe space, lovely bathroom. The hotel has a nicely decorated bar area & the most stunning wood-panelled breakfast room with historical significance of Scott of the Antarctic - and served an excellent quality breakfast. I definitely recommend this hotel.

A find in the centre of the capitol of Wales that we'll return to! Found online, this hotel, the oldest in Cardiff, is located above the Slug & Lettuce and O'Neils in St Mary Street. Literally 5 min from the Station, Cardiff Castle, Motorpoint Arena & the main shopping centre of St David's, this hotel couldn't be better placed. Access is restricted via an intercom to reception on the 2nd floor, providing safety and assurance to hotel guests, and lifts provide a reliable form of travel. Although our room was 5 floors above street and thus nightlife level, there was no noise pollution and so no disturbed sleep. Rooms were contemporary, well decorated & maintained and had all the accessories needed - drinks making facilities, hair drier, iron, good TV , etc. Buffet breakfast was tasty, varied & plentiful. Service from the staff was also friendly and efficient, excellent. Highly recommended for a quiet stay in the centre of the vibrant city of Cardiff.

Stopped here for my girlfriends birthday and the hotel is set in a great location of central Cardiff. We were on the 4th floor with triple glazed windows and you couldn't hear the night life at all. So don't worry about been kept up at night because you won't be. The deluxe rooms are very spacious and come with a lot of amenities. If you love breakfast then the buffet breakfast at £14 each if you haven't already paid for it is well worth it. The staff are wonderful. In our specific room there are a few minor dents on furniture and the toilet flushing system isn't great. If you put anymore than 4 pieces of toilet tissue it does struggle to clear it all. Some of the colours they have used in the bedrooms doesn't work and could do with another think and another lick of paint as there are marks on the wall and the tiles could do with re-grouting in the bathroom as you'll see from the pictures. A couple of minor little things are that we had a hole in our duvet and the air con never really gets cold as the rooms are very warm.

Lovely independent hotel in the centre of town and wasn't as noisy as I was worried about. Rooms were very clean as wooden flooring rather than carpet. Lots of space and well kept. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Bar prices were very reasonable; drinks only at time of visit. The car park is a bit tight, mind, and check for road closures around busy days; we thankfully missed those closures. Would definitely use again in future.

All I can say is don't judge a book by its cover. From outside this hotel you would think no way am I stopping here. Inside it was a different story staff very friendly. Room was of good standard with bathrobes shower gel, shampoo and many more freebies including a bottle of wine. Breakfast was very good. If we went back to Cardiff we would definitely stop at this hotel.

In the centre of Cardiff, car park was really close with a discount for guests. Second time we've had the cinema room (although it has been around 3-4 years since the last time) bathroom has been upgraded, very nice. Really comfy bed, added extras like snacks, mini fridge, gaming/retro lighting and the star wars wall, plus posters just make the room feel super snug, like a dream bedroom. Can't wait to go back.

Rooms clean& well stocked tea facilities, lovely white big towels , bathroom with shower perfect for my health needs . Albeit the water in basin was slow flow & when showering the water took a while to drain away . Huge king size bed fab ... pillows where a tad firm but all clean fresh linen , enjoyed our stay & will definitely return in the near future. Parking wasn't to bad a short walk away & free , so no hassle with that . Security on doors good to know. In such a big city .. Had a great time in Cardiff. Thank you to the staff at the hotel.

Very slick service and felt like every precaution had been taken to keen everyone safe. Insanely quiet stay, which I appreciated, though I worry that low occupancy isn't tenable in the long term. I truly hope things pick up soon for the Royal, from what I saw they deserve to survive and thrive.

I read in a magazine in Cardiff that the royal hotel had bee hives on top roof that you could go and look at so I went into this hotel and although the reception is in a very weird place different from other hotels I asked if they could show me the bee hives and they did The bee keeper came down in the lift an took me to the roof I had to put on the bee keeping outfit so I would not get stung and he showed me the hives and told me what flowers the bees liked the most that they collect from Sophia gardens which was interesting I myself have never been stung by any bee but back in the town I used to live in my garden was really lovely and one of the best gardens on the street I grew all kinds of vegetables and loads of lavender to I never used any pesticides and I had every kind of bee in my garden even my mother said that your garden has loads of bees in it I have been feeding them since I was a child one thing that I got taught was to garden and I can hold a bee in my hand and pick it off a plant and let it go without it stinging me Back in the old town I had a swarm of them near my loft after someone went in there and caused damage in my loft the bees were swarming there and they kept going down to my door to that someone had put on faulty in the same family A bee came down and landed on my door and told me to keep my door locked and I stroked it and said Thankyou I have always loved and taken care of the bees for a period at that address for over 14 years from 1999 until 2013 I kept my door locked and two people turned up rattling my windows and letterbox even shouting through it I phoned the police and told them to get these people away from my property and they ignored me and yet I needed the support There behavior was not rational and it was Leslie crooks and Darren crooks to just after my mother passed away I just wanted them to leave and I had to spend my time upper floor away from them because they were behaving so weirdly even after this day because the police did nothing about there visits Just before this happened Leslie crooks threw Avery large stone at my property my daughters were at home with me I told my eldest to move away from the window and it was that large the stone could of gone through the window and smashed it Afterwards Leslie crooks bragged even outside my property saying out loud “a problem family lives around the corner and they threw a stone at my window “ On another occasion I got food poisoning Leslie crooks had a spare key to my home in case I lost mine he let himself in and heated up my Chinese spring rolls I had bought from Asda and then put them back in the fridge he again bragged again and said “i don’t use my microwave” I became very ill At this time I attended an a4e building which means forearm (afore) and in the waiting room I was psychologically abused by the people there saying out loud “I shouldn’t put it in the microwave should I “ You see I was bullied all the time in this building and even received nose bleeds and burning of the chest due to all the built up bullying off cocaine users in this building and Leslie crooks to This occurred while I was at A4e from January 2012-June 2013 and even when I filled in a form at Leicester Charles street job centre to say I am giving my job seekers allowance up due to bullying a black man got up went over to a woman an showed it2her an her attitude was very nasty and sarcastic with “That’s up to her” On my medical record it clearly states that I received medical attention and this is due2bullying of others and this can be clearly seen by any investigator(dated2) I even got sanctioned due2being ill bcus of the bullying occurred by2people which were Steven shelton and Adam muhammid (shelton and crooks buried nex town2barrow near each other go look)then I knew why Adam muhammid wanted me to get a memory card I said no over and over Sarita karwal got a job with a4e she saidJobseeker’s Allowance was not enough and she was collecting a lot of identity through Loughborough college where she got the details on a memory card(fraud)

Booked a 1 night stay with the hotel directly. More than reasonable at £87 for a deluxe room with breakfast included and a bottle of wine waiting on our arrival - hotel is in a very central location close to train station and shopping areas. First impressions were not great - the outside badly needs a face lift as looked old/dirty. Wasn't a fan of the door policy - always locked so you had to ring the intercom every time but is understandable as it is in the city centre. Room was a bit dusty but otherwise clean and tidy. Bed was super comfy! Bathroom was nice enough but the water temperature in the shower fluctuated from warm to hot the entire time. Facilities are great! Toiletries were a pleasure to use (honey based soap, shower gel and shampoo) full range of extras like sewing kit, vanity kit, toothpaste, toothbrush, shower cap as well. Towels massive and fluffy, bathrobes provided, as well as hairdryer, iron, ironing board, safe, fridge and the full length mirror was a nice touch. Full tea tray and kettle provided. Slept like a log! I didn't hear any street noise, lifts or other guests. Every member of staff we encountered were friendly and welcoming from check-in to breakfast. And the breakfast! Very impressive spread with just about everything you could think of, including (and I love this!) 3 separate toasters set for if you light your toast light, medium or dark ❤️❤️❤️ Such great value for money - I would definitely stay here again. Highly recommend 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Stayed here for four nights during Covid crisis. Felt perfectly secure whilst in hotel. Hand sanitiser everywhere and staff perfectly aware of rules on distancing etc. A great stay, with many other provisions put in place to deal with the pandemic. Shame the population of my home town are not so aware, and behave like half wits. Can't recommend the Royal highly enough.

Stayed here as part of a Six Nations package. The hotel is well situated and Cardiff city centre is literally on the doorstep. Although it has no on site parking, there are plenty of car parks in easy walking distance. The room was clean and comfortable. We ate a filling breakfast in the restaurant both mornings. The food and drink was kept topped up, and no queues. The staff are friendly and helpful and we were made very welcome. The bar is also very reasonably priced.
