Castle Coch is a true fairytale delight in Cardiff! This charming castle captured my heart with its enchanting architecture and rich history. The moment I stepped inside, I was transported to a world of wonder. The attention to detail in every nook and cranny is impressive. The colorful interiors, intricate designs, and stunning views from the castle are a visual treat. It's a perfect blend of history and fantasy that left me amazed. The beautiful surroundings and well-maintained grounds provide a serene escape from the city. Whether you're a history enthusiast or simply looking for a magical outing, Castle Coch is a must-visit. It's a short journey to a bygone era that's sure to leave you with a smile. Notes: *There are free parking spaces. *Entry to castle is £8.70 for adults.

Lovely small castle, well maintained. We paid around £8 per adult, £5 per child (5 +), free car park and audio guides . Quite few steps and no accessibility, so not recommended for elderly, disable and babies. Worth a visit , we had a great time inside and outside the castle (picnic)

IT'S WORTH VISITING Yes, it's a tiny castle and the entry fee doesn't seem worth it, but trust me, spend the money! The red castle looks like something out of a fairytale. It's a relatively 'modern' castle, but it's decorated very lavishly inside. When you enter, it looks small but there's a lot more to it. The best parts are some of the ceilings, and the chapel at the top of the tower, with the ornate stained-glass windows. WARNING - the approach roads to get here are incredibly narrow. Drive slowly and watch out for oncoming cars. Always be aware of crossing places as you might need to reverse to let someone past.

This is a very quaint little castle. Lots of work has been done to offer to the public a castle that world have looked in it's heyday. The rooms were well laid out. Some extraordinary decorations in the rooms.

Lovely castle with beautiful rooms. Quite a few steps up and down so not ideal for tiny humans or elderly. There are toilets, gift shop, large carpark. Kids loved the audio guides too. Can highly recommend!

Had a lovely few hours here. I took my 3 Yr old and he loved exploring a "real" castle and he loved and found it interesting learning about each room. We also visited the tea room which was a pleasant surprise. Had a pot of tea for £3 which consisted of about 6 cups of tea and my son a child's hot chocolate. All decent prices. Highly recommend

This is an architectural masterpiece located in the Welsh Mountains and truly a jewel of the UK. Originally a Medieval castle this was rebuilt at great expense by Lord Bute and designed in a Gothic style. As with his other projects this has an incredible attention to detail. The rooms are decorated with incredible luxury for the time and they still look stunning even today. There are several floors to explore including bed chamber, drawing room and library. You can even check out the cellar or dungeon. You get a free audio tour with the ticket and it gives a lot of useful information. As you'd expect it is a great photo opportunity too.

Great fairly tale castle, a must for all young at heart. If you have trouble with stairs this is not for you, although handrails are in places. Parking very easy.

Free audio tour makes a big difference to this experience; the audio provides a lot of details about the different parts of the castle with options to hear additional details and stories if you want to. The decor and castle is well maintained and the staff are all very friendly. There is free parking at the castle and the tour with audio lasts around 45 - 1h 15 minutes.

Staff was really nice and honest with us- we went to get tickets at half one but they shut at two for an hour or so so they said to come back. It’s very beautiful and picturesque. A real fairytale castle. And it wasn’t too busy either. Lots of dog walkers on the ground too and a friendly space. Easy parking by the castle too

Really beautiful fairytale castle. We enjoyed our visit, something a little different from the ruins we usually go for. There is parking just outside. Beautiful views.

Also, I saw this passing along m4. Wow, what a worthwhile visit, even in the rain. Something magical about the building. Def take the self tour route, no rush to move to the next room, and own speed. Nice gift shop has coffee shop as well. Hours were restricted in winter but so worth it.

Yet another small look alike place from outside but amazing inside. We changed our mind about small castles after visiting a few. Architecture make it a fortress yet it looks like holiday home. Great surroundings. Funky walks with wooden sculptures and lovely views. It's a pity there are no viewing platforms onto surrounding areas but it's a safe place after all. Must visit.

Castle Coch was a real surprise. A small jewel guarded in the middle of the woods. There is a fairytale atmosphere and the external structure, made of stone and red details, slowly reveals itself to the eye. The interiors are perfectly maintained and the details of each room leave you speechless. The small towers of the castle make everything even more impressive. Absolutely not to be missed!

Beautiful place, we visited while it was decorated for Xmas and it is spectacular. We had a free audio guide due to other events taking place during our booking and it has an easy to follow tour with great information explaining much of the architecture and aspirations of the family who built it.

This is a lovely romantic castle in a very nice location. We were able to visit almost everywhere in the castle. We went early on a Sunday so it was not crowded. Going up and down the stairs was good exercise. My teenage daughter enjoyed it as well. I could see there was a path next to the castle where I believe one couldgo for a walk. The staff were friendly and helpful.

Make sure you get there when its open, they tend to have a break during lunch time and the place closes. There's fair amount of free parking in the premises. The place itself is stunning, fairytale Castle as you can see in the photo

Love this fairly tail castle. Not loads to do here but there are nice walks. Initial hill is steep but is a good warm up! Lovely views.

So happy we stopped by. This helps you see what a castle would have been like all those years ago. The audio tour was fantastic and just the right duration for younger children.

Nice castle. Always see it from m4 so decided to go see it as people call it the fairy castle. You get little speakers to put around your neck which you scan to tell you all about diffrent areas of the castle. Has a shop and little cafe. Very nice afternoon out there. Lots parking and free and nice walks around area

Wonderful castle rebuilt on medieval footings by the butes . Fairytale like castle with beautiful roofs . Little cafe for lunch and coffee's . There is also an audio guide for information the whole way round the castle . stunning castle and only 14 mins away from Caerphilly castle did both in one day and I actually preferred these 2 castles over Cardiff castle 15 mins in the other direction

🏰Castell Coch has its own character inside and out. Car park is free and ticket price is £8.7/ adult. Food is a little bit pricy compare to outside average coffee shops. £5.95 for a panini. Picnic at the front field is an option. Toilet is clean. We spent 1-2 hours here including dining. Worth to come!

Enjoyed walking around this amazing place with my son listening to the audio tour. We were both fascinated by each room and what we could learn by the audio tour. There was no queue and the staff were so friendly and helpful.

3 year old wanted to go in and he loved it. Great little walk around and a little chocolate egg prize from their Easter trail. Loved the puzzle room which honestly made the £8 per adult fee worth it.

What a delightful place to visit. Staff very friendly and loved the information you gained around the castle. Went for a walk in the grounds after and the wild garlic was astounding and the smell wonderful. Would highly recommend. A place for all ages.

Amazing interiors in this mock mediaeval hunting lodge. The castle has a fairytale look to it with turrets and spires. Situated on a hillside just north of Cardiff, the panoramic views over the river Taff and the valley below are striking. However it should be remembered that all this opulence was funded by exploiting the labour of thousands of miners who worked in the collieries owned by the Bute family, many of whom lived in poverty in atrocious conditions.

We had a wet but enjoyable walk around. Very interesting place with lots of rooms to explore. The staff are so helpful and friendly. The grounds around it are a beautiful place to walk too.

A beautiful castle in amazing condition so you can really appreciate the beauty of it outside but inside is something else.. some of the rooms are decorated with intricate carvings, castings and paintings with ornate surrounding from the ceiling to the floors.. you can use little podcast devices on the way around as mini tour guide also and has some lovely walks all around the woods and down to the river Taf.. lots of parking spaces too.

The castle was a lovely experience to get to know more the Welsh history in the medieval era. The place where the castle is situated is amazing and is great for family hike trips. Yet the castle itself is really small and takes about half an hour to explore. I was disappointed how small it is and how quick I finished the tour. However very interesting and worth a visit.

Lovely walk from the car park to the castle although some parts of the walk were steep and uneven. There are different walking trails. We went via the sculpture trial. We visited on a Wednesday and unfortunately the castle was closed 😕. On the way back we visited the Forest tea room.Quaint tea room with a peacock. Very enjoyable day out.

Lovely woodland and walks with plenty of space for kids to play with what nature has to offer. A little busy for my liking but then I’m used to rural Wales. Will definitely be visiting again next time we are in the Cardiff area.

Not sure which precise area we are talking about. I suspect that these notes may refer to an area of Forest Fawr slightly to the North of the Castle. Well maintained woodlands with many criss crossing paths mainly on the flat. . There is good parking available. An added bonus is the many fine wood carvings scattered around.

Absolutely beautiful and amazing! Being out on the trails so close to nature. The surroundings so calm and quiet all you hear are the birds and other wildlife. Just wonderful!

The place is good for a short hike. Nothing much as a site seeing. Try to carry some food / drinks if planning to stay long.

Stunning castle situated in pretty South Wales. A must visit if you are interested in castles with a quirky interior, lots of rooms to explore, and a location that has been featured in many films and TV shows! It took my wife and I about an hour to explore, and we stopped off at the cafe before we made our way on to Cardiff (about a 20 minute drive away). So cheap to enter, loads of free parking and you get a free audio guide when you pay for your ticket!

Charming old castle with lots off. Story behind it

  • 4/5 Ian M. 2 years ago on Google
We visited as part of a short trip to South Wales. A stunning castle perched on the hillside just north of Cardiff. It was an unexpected twist on all of the other castles we have seen across Wales. It is superbly decorated with some beautiful paintings and some unusual carvings. The architecture is unusual as it reminded me more of a Swiss castle than one in Wales. The audio guide was well worth listening to and the guide had some additional information on the background of the family who renovated the building in the late 1800's. There are a couple of great walks in the natural forest which covers the surrounding hill side.

Worth a visit. It isn't a ruin and technically not a real castle but it looks nice if a little small. You can go inside but it won't take very long. There are some grounds to have a picnic and parking is free. There are also some nice mountain biking trails behind.

We had a great visit here with the grandkids. Staff were excellent and the place is really well laid out for a family visit. There’s a good sized car park and a well laid out route through the castle. The rooms have plenty of exhibits and explanations in them and our 3 and 9 year old grand kids had a really fun time. There’s also a cafe about 10 minutes walk away.

I love this place ! On my doorstep and I never get fed up of visiting it! Most beautiful fairytale castle hustled between the forest and trees in the most tranquil serene settings. I love history and this castle is a perfect example of ours. Stunning. Easy to find ample car parking 3 lots of car parks Disabled parking Can also have picnic on grass and do the forest treks It's not a massive castle but it's definatly worth a visit just for its beauty and to go in the rooms to see and feel how they lived in our past Always 5 stars for me .
