What a treat this was! We visited Cardiff Castle with my nearly 2 year old and opted to do the House tour as well. Before the tour began, we took a wander down to the Roman Mural and the Firing Line Museum to pass the time. Then we were directed to the meeting point where the tour started promptly. Our tour guide, Jonas, was wonderful. He was incredibly knowledgeable and detailed in what he told us. His delivery was relaxing with the right level of energy to keep you listening. The rooms on the house tour were just beautiful. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anywhere so ornately decorated! The tour was 50 minutes long which was about the limit for my toddler. Plenty to see but obviously you can’t touch which was testing him a bit. After the tour was over, we let him have a run about on the grounds before heading up to the castle. There’s quite a few steps to get up and we carried the little one. That part isn’t so bad, despite the steps being steep. However, there are a few more levels you can climb to reach the very top where you can enjoy views of the Cardiff skyline. This part was practically unreachable with the little one. There’s only space for one person to climb up or down to get to the very top so I ventured up alone. My partner said that getting down from second floor of the castle was especially difficult as the stairs were incredibly steep. The staff were all incredibly pleasant. There were lots of facilities. We did park over by the Principality Stadium on an NCP car park which cost £14.50 for a 2.5 hour stay. However, later in our visit we came across Sophia Gardens car park which is about a 10-15 minute walk from the Castle and costs CONSIDERABLY less (£4.10 for the same time period!)

Wasnt sure what to expect , calling it a castle is a bit misleading, castle walls and grounds would be a better description, free entry so can't complain , coffee shop and bar too . But it's just a big square wall, with a huge grassed area and a small keep on a hill that you can't enter . But still nice to visit 😊

With COVID-19, the castle was closed. On the other hand, we were able to sit in the castle courtyard and enjoyed the calming scenery and sun. They had benches. They also drew circles on the grass, so families can sit, while maintaining social distancing. There are coffee shops and restaurants nearby for a quick bite. Would love to visit again after COVID to explore the castle.

There are almost too many microcosms within this castle to name them all; I'd be here all day! I will stick to the most remarkable parts; I'm long-winded enough as it is! The World War II museum in the basement is comprehensive and fascinating, crammed with maps, dioramas, weapons, uniforms, photos, videos and much more. The walk through the *inside* of the outer rampart walls (used as air raid shelters during the Blitz) is memorable for both its dim, claustrophobic atmosphere and its expansive length. The guided tour is absolutely worth the price, but it is equally enjoyable to discover all the little nooks and secrets yourself. The list of attractions continues: the Arab room, the bell tower, the Roman walls, falconry and jousting demonstrations (keep an eye on the event calendar), and probably a dozen other things I am forgetting. Any tourist or historian paasing through Cardiff would be doing themselves a disservice by missing an opportunity to visit this splendid castle.

Beautiful house. Each room is uniquely decorated. If you’re visiting the castle, be sure to drop by the house. My favorite room was the Arabic Room. Seeing the house (although not all rooms were available) was included in the entrance fee.

A must do to any visit to Cardiff, you should definitely join a guided tour to visit rooms which are not open to public outside of those tours
