Lovely location for a few hours out, conveniently located minutes off M4 and well signed. Good cheap parking and lovely little visitor centre, shop and well stocked cafe, all very dog friendly. Shame more of the locks haven't been restored, much work still to do.

Cheap parking, £1 for up to 4 hours Inside the visitor centre, the cafe has a variety of food, drinks, cakes, ice cream, options suitable for adults & children All the workers are welcoming, polite, love to have a conversation and share info regarding the locks There's a beautiful shop inside selling a variety of things, if you want a unique gift this is the place to go! Second hand book stall Clean and accessible toilets Duck food can be purchased for 50p each There's an area for children to sit and colour, play games etc in an area full of information and the history regarding the locks The lake is peaceful to sit around, plenty of benches available to sit down at and a few picnic benches The paths are suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs and you can walk for many miles so on a dry day it's a wonderful place to visit

Lovely area to walk, dog friendly and great views down the valley. The locks are amazing feat of engineering from the 18th century !!! Some have been restored but of course money and volunteering has been in short supply last couple of years ! Great little cafe with lovely treats and good coffee, plus a little souvenir shop to help maintain the area. Well worth a visit.

Great place to have a short or long walk with the family and dog. Parking was free today as the machine was all wrapped up but normally £1 for 4 hours. There seemed to be a couple of charging places for EVs. Walks are beside the old canal which is not full of water but is surrounded by woodland and birdsong. The cafe/museum and staff are very dog friendly. We all enjoyed a lovely ice-cream including Suki who had a home-made pupicicle!

We absolutely love this place, offering a good selection of snacks and also some really clear guidance on where you can go to either bike or walk the canal path and they are linked to join the Brecon Canal

Absolutely sensational. Our history is so fascinating. I particularly loved the scenery and Ponsarn cottage. There are walks off tge beaten track, taking in views over the M4 and a Golf course in the distance. NCN Route 47 runs through the locks which will take you through to Sirhowy Countryside Park and walk.

Family friendly walks around the old canal. The reason for the four star rating is that the proximity to the M 4 makes it noisy. There are toilet facilities, a small shop and a cafe that serves hot food( pasties and bacon rolls) and hot and cold drinks.

We chose to stop here as it was just few minutes from the M4 its shame the canal resoration is in its very early stages. The is a circular short walk on good footpath from the car park. Inside the canal centre is a shop and small but busy reasonably priced cafe. The cafe is dog friendly and we booked a table which was very helpful.

Delightful place to visit for a good walk. Decent parking spot, £1 per car, plus visitor centre with small cafe. Centre not open to go inside at the moment due to Covid, but you can be served from the small hatch. There’s a water basin at the start of the walk, inhabited by lots of ducks (food available from the shop at 50p per bag). Various pathways to follow, challenging in places, and little bridges to cross over sides. Locks on this side are no longer in use and in need of some tlc but it’s a lovely walk anyway. If you cross the road there is a flat pathway along the other side of the canal which is tidy and well maintained.

Lovely place for a wander and has a shop, cafe and toilet too. Good place for a snack and tea or coffee. The car park is pay and display by the way, which is easy to miss.

We have never been here before but fancied a different dog walk. In short it was brilliant. Two minutes off the M4 ( we're from near Bristol), easy parking and very reasonable cost (£1 for up to 4hrs). We just followed the canal, very well maintained path, suitable for bikes, pushchairs etc. The locks and canal are generally very overgrown but not an issue as its made clear works are underway to clear it so can't grumble at that. When we got back from our walk we grabbed a bite to eat and drink in the cafe, food was lovely and very filling! We're definitely coming back. The only thing to be aware of if you have children running around or dogs off lead is there are very deep and sheer drops into the locks, very well signposted with warnings but worth keeping in mind if they get inquisitive.

I recently visited here to film for the EvLynn channel the channel on the youtube platform shows much more than the pictures i show here. i think its a realy Lovely place great for a day out with the family on a sunny day its got picnic tables. Its got a nice visitor centre and outdoor tables and seats long walks during filming i walked over a narrow bridge over the canal i dont like heights so if your scaired of heights keep away from the gated section. I observed squirrels playing and the ducks in the water such a great place. you normaly have to pay i cant remember how much but you dont have to pay this time of the year. Anyway well worth a visit for sure

I took the kids and the dog for a lovely walk today. The locks are fascinating and it’s great to see work going on to restore the area. The staff in the visitor centre and cafe were excellent, the food was lovely and the whole thing was very cheap. I can’t believe people are leaving 1 star reviews, it’s an abandoned canal in partial restoration, I’m not sure what they expected!

Very peaceful, can see the engineering of the locks. Lock centre has a small but very interesting exhibition. Great cup of tea and lovely scones. Staff very friendly. Nice round walk around locks.

Dog friendly cafe and shop showing locally made/produced items. Flat paved paths for walks along the canal with regular heron and king Fisher sightings. Events like Father Christmas and Easter Trails

Impromptu visit on a sunny day for a quick along the tow paths. Very pleasant indeed. Not many people about, car park quite empty. Disappointed that the parking was chargeable (I believe this is a fairly recent innovation, Grrrr) Card only payment too. However had a lovely ice cream in the shop, very friendly staff.

Lovely stop with our dogs on the way to our holiday cottage. The canal & locks are in need of attention, but was told this is happening. Cafe was great, as were the lovely staff.

  • 5/5 Rachael R. 8 months ago on Google
Lovely walk and cafe, staff were lovely and dogs welcome in the cafe, parking was only £1 for a few hours

Never been here before. A lovely quiet serene place, nice walks along side historic canal. Sadly old canals in a state of disrepair and needing a vast amount of money to rejuvenate them. Lots of volunteers there today cutting back the vegetation along the paths. Cafe prices good, good selection of food and coffees, etc. Dog friendly. Small indoor museum area interesting and informative on the history of the canals

Met a friend here to walk along the canal. Lovely lamb and mint pasty and a cuppa in the cafe. Toilets available and a lovely little shop. Friendly staff.

I had never been there before and only knew about the place this year when travelling to Ystrad Mynach. I found the place easy to find. Parking charges were very reasonable. The cafe was great to buy sandwiches, cake, drinks and ice cream. The walk was great, but a pity no locks are in use anymore. Quite steep to take a push chair or wheelchair from top lock to the bottom one. The day was a bit too bright to take pictures. I will go back again in the near future. I recommend this place as I really enjoyed it, even when no boats can use it anymore. I would love it to be saved and reopened. This place would need millions of pounds. To bring it back to life.

Was a nice walk, peaceful, though not the best canal walk I have done but still enjoyed it! I have also been spoilt with BaNES and Somerset based canal walks! Lovely little stroll but sad to see the state of some of the locks.

Lovely place for a couple of hours walk around. Very friendly and dog friendly cafe treats and water provided. Reasonably priced and good food.plenty of disabled parking which is free with a blue badge. The locks, which are the reason you will be going after all, are in need of a little tlc, which is a shame because they would be very impressive. As it stands, they are very overgrown and in a very poor state even as a historical and non functional site.

Only three or so have been restored, the re mm aiming eleven are in a state of glorious disrepair making an amazing green refuge for wildlife. The top of the step of locks is peaceful, however as one descends the M4 gets ever closer and ever noisier distracting from the tranquility of the upper walk. Overall a nice walk and an interesting piece of engineering and history as one marvels at the sheer scale of the lift.

  • 4/5 Peter W. 1 year ago on Google
A nice spot to stop off at along the M4 if you need to break up a long car journey. But also a great place to start a walk or cycle ride along the miles of towpath alongside the pretty Mon and Brec Canal. There is a car parking charge here, but well worth it, if you're going to be there a while. Just be careful when you come off the motorway junction that you go all the way around to the minor road, and don't do what I did, and get back on the motorway going eastbound!!

Nice place to stop and good for walks or cycling - quite a hill though. Nice cafe. Need to be really careful with kids though. The locks are very deep. Needs a little tlc.

Good walks and cycling. Cafe at site.

  • 5/5 Fraser W. 2 years ago on Google
It's a very peaceful and beautiful place to sit down and chill out. There's a cafe which is ok, I only had coffee and crisps ( Tyrrell's Cheddar stinky but good 🙂 ). There is a information centre which I didn't visit but I had a walk around outside and felt good enjoying the trees, the water and of course the locks which ( I think ) are fantastic. If you're nearby and have half an hour and want to relax in a beautiful setting then 14 Locks is worth a shout 👍
