Went for a cold January walk. I have been driving past this for over 50 years and my wife suggest a visit. It has plenty of parking and a lot of ground to cover. Family friendly with paths suitable for prams. Plenty of toilets and cafes for hot drinks and snacks. We didn't visit the museum as we simply ran out of time. We usually like our walks a little more on the wild side but this is O.K. and easy enough in good trainers.

We have visited the castle a few times and each time it’s been delightful. It’s nestled amongst some beautiful natural Woodlands and it’s cool just to walk around that place. The kids especially love the wooden animals that have been carved out of trees. My children love the park there with the water and the ice cream parlour it’s a lovely place to go for an afternoon out my sister lives nearby so it’s all ideal place to meet up and visit. They often have events held there at the castle so music festivals and craft fairs this is wonderful for the local area.

Fantastic place to go. Lovely castle and has little shop and cafe inside. Tickets are £2.30 each a adult and kids under 16 free to look at the museum and art not much my thing but really enjoyed it. There is a lovely large lake to walk around and feed ducks. There a little kids train £2 each for kids and parents. If you walk futher up past the castle there is a lovely restustant up there with kids park and little water play area for kids to play in summer. Staff was lovely and very helpful. Parking is free and alot of it but all spaces out in diffrent areas.

Castle, lake, trail walk, playground for kids and cafe are all well maintained and looks great. Perfect for a day trip from Cardiff. Train service from Cardiff is frequent and hopefully soon will get the new tram trains as well. Its about 25 minutes walk from the station. The cafe has good views and has clean toilet facilities.

Absolutely amazed how beautiful this place is. And so much to see in museum and art gallery. Such a great history lesson around iron works but also town itself. Definitely worth visiting ☺️

Lovely walks around the grounds and lake. Miniature railway ride. Museum and art gallery in main house accessed with small admission fee. Cafe, also located in the main house, with free access, was excellent. Had afternoon tea. Food and service were both amazing.

Lovely to see the park open for half term. The Lake is always great to walk around, but my daughter loves the new cycling area and then a visit to the play park. Mummy loves the fact she can entertain her daughter then grab a cuppa while the little one burns off more energy at the park!! Plenty to do and see, looking forward to exploring more as the weather improves.

Lovely mock castle/ mansion house, with good history of the family and iron works. Parking is free as are the large Beautiful parklands and walks. Small cost to enter the house, only the ground floor and basement accessible due to the condition of the property - but well worth it. Lovely lakeside and grounds, lots of different areas to explore including playgrounds for children. Also a small garden centre with a cafe close to a carpark. Another cafe above the bandstand is also very pleasant. Would recommend if in the area.

Absolutely fantastic. There's plenty to do for everyone, from woodland walks and small pond tranquility up the mountain at the back of the castle, to peaceful lunch by the main lake. We also picked up a free leaflet of the taff trail and popped over to see the Cafarthfa iron works which were owned by the Crawshaw family. The views from the top are fantastic, but the views of Ceod y cymmer viaduct are also clear near the lake in the Castle. There is also some kind of furnace at the top of the gurnos estate.

Beautiful castle and surrounding park. Lovely trails and lake. Excellent place to spend weekend with your family. Some of the things to do are walk alongside the lake, hop on the mini train, visit the museum and art gallery. Explore the trails and listen to some live music. Definitely recommended.

Amazing place for walks, picnics, playpark and splashpad. Lovely big lake with birds. Didn't go inside as there was a wedding taking place. Visitor centre & museum has a small charge to enter. Must visit again to spend more time there

Nice parkland, but we went to see the art and museum. but alas it was closed, even though posted as open. Apparently all the artifacts are being moved to a new location! So a good idea to check before you go to avoid disappointment.

Just realize it's a house built to look like a castle. And only the museum side is open.

Over the years castles, in general, have not caught my eye so I have rarely visited them. In preparing for this day out, I watched a video of THIS castle. My interest was instantly piqued. My first photo inside the building had to be of the ceiling's design of Yorkshire roses 🌹. Apologies to Yorkshire.... their rose is white. The Crayshaw family lived in Yorkshire centuries ago. Yorkshire borders the county I live in, hence the interest. It was a fascinating place to visit but it took me virtually an hour on foot from the train station to get there. In mitigation, I got many photos on the way. The photos I show are only from within the grounds of the Castle. As you will see I had a giggle within the museum before making my way out of the grounds and on to my next adventure.... There is only public access to less than half the building but it is well worth a visit. Views of the surrounding hills will be long remembered. For those on foot, the driveway up to the Castle is something like a one in four.

One of the most beautiful place to visit in Merthyr Tydfil which is only 20-25 minutes walking distance from Merthyr station. They have a good collection of old artifacts such as Roman era and Egyptian items with the blend of some fabulous paintings and artwork which reflects the better scenario of past. Highly recommend to travel with family. Tickets are very cheap and only 2.50£ and have a discount option for students.

I didn't go inside just enjoying the nature. Beautiful, glamorous, amazing... must see. Free parking, plenty of space and lovely people. PS: if you are into historical buildings it is definitely worth to enter. £2.30 only... no joke. 🤫

Absolutely lovely grounds. Would go again. Free entry to the grounds. Nominal fee for the entry to the museum. £2.30 an adult I think and kids were free. Water splash park which I didn't take a picture of as full of children. And cafe by the side. Well worth it.

Beautiful park and castle with a lovely cafe inside castle and another cafe just up at the splash park. Cash or card into castle and cash only at Cafe in the castle. The park is free and beautiful to walk around.

First time visiting and can't believe I haven't been here before. Lovely walk and a great place to bring the kids. Need to come back and see more than the splash park and cafe as so much more from the looks of it.

Beautiful place and plenty there for the kids too, There is a park and cafe at the back right of the castle with a small splash park and balance bike track with swings slides etc, Just inside the entrance of the Castle there's a shop where you can purchase small toys which takes Card and a tea room but only takes cash, you can also do some fishing at the lake with a day ticket and is Coarse fishing 🎣 and with public toilets nearby, there is parking at the entrance gates the exit gate and at the back of the Castle, Visit you won't be Disappointed 👌👍😎

We only went in the castle grounds, well when I say only, what a spectacular place so much beauty, a total pleasure

Despite appearing to be a fortified building, it is a house built in the style of a large mansion with a large kitchen, bake house and dairy, billiard room, library, and a range of reception rooms. In addition, there is a brew house, icehouse and extensive storage cellars that used to contain over 15,000 individual bottles of wines and spirits such as Sherry, Champagne, Whiskey, Brandy, Madeira Wine, and over 7,500 bottles of port. you don't get to see all of this, Adjoining the building were also stable blocks and coach houses. The castle stands in 158-acre (64 ha) of parkland, now called Cyfarthfa Park and maintained by Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council. The park is listed on the Cadw/ICOMOS Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest in Wales. It's £2.30 to go inside the castle to see the art work and industrial history museum, but not much of the castle, so we didn't go inside, the park and gardens are great for walks and picnics, miniature railway, splash pad for the kids, and a nice day in the sun.

Cyfarthfa Castle Museum set in over 200 acres of woodland is an oasis of calm yet right in Merthyr Tydfil. Once a steel production owner’s mansion it has been partly restored to show some of its regal origins. The museum is an art gallery primarily with a historical display in the basement. It is the grounds and woodland that are a beautiful area to walk in. There is a small entrance fee for the building but the grounds are free. 2 cafes offer refreshments.

Free parking Only 2.30 per person for entry to the museam. Staff were lovely! There's a tea room which smelt stunning. The museum was great, had lots of history. Written and physical. Beautiful art work. Lots of fun artifacts. The ground is beautiful too. Lovely big lake and you can feed the birds.

A Victorian manor with decorated with a castle motif. There is some interesting art on display. It however is in a great park which has an excellent cafe. Great place to walk and let the kids run.

  • 4/5 Joe M. 1 year ago on Google
Wonderful architectural masterpiece. Built in 1820 by William Crawshay it's more of a country manor than a castle. It's beautiful to look at from all sides and it makes a great photo opportunity. The grounds are gorgeous, with a lake to walk around, forests, many trees and flowers. It's quite pretty. The lake usually had ducks too. Inside the castle there is a museum firstly about the local area and secondly about the Crawshay family and his art collection. It's quite informative. It's a really enjoyable place to walk

Beautiful place! The gardens are well kept, beautiful flowers. They have a lovely park with a splash zone which is perfect for kids 4+. Younger ones not much to do. Though down by the lake there is a lovely train ride which is only £2 to go on and such fun. Staff was very friendly too. Perfect day out

Really lovely place to take the kids, my grandson loved the train ride, the walk around the lake was great lovely to see the baby ducks and geese very clean, and plenty of grounds so you can make a full day with a picnic, the park is lovely plenty for the kids to explore, shame the water pad wasn't working but we will return for him to play again

  • 5/5 Valarie T. 3 years ago on Google
The castle and grounds and lake are really gorgeous. Due to covid restrictions entrance to the castle and other play areas are not open but there are lots of places to walk and picnic and just sit and admire the view. Highly recommended.

Good place for visiting on a rainy day to see some details from the history of Merthyr Tydfil and the region. It takes around one hour to see all displays situated in basement and ground floor of the castle. There is beautiful park and woodlands around the castle with some benches to sit down and relax

  • 5/5 Tamara Q. 2 years ago on Google
Such a lovely place to visit. We came today when it was very rainy but still enjoyed every minute. Lovely place, interesting museum/gallery and very friendly and dedicated staff. Really appreciated the thought and effort that the staff put in to keep the kids entertained :)
