The
Montargil
Dam
is
located
in
the
district
of
Portalegre,
municipality
of
Ponte
de
Sôr,
parish
of
Montargil.
It
belongs
to
the
watershed
of
the
Tagus
River,
and
is
located
on
the
Ribeira
de
Sôr.
It
was
designed
by
the
Directorate-General
for
Hydraulic
Services
in
1954
and
was
completed
in
1958.
It
is
currently
owned
by
the
Sorraia
Valley
Irrigators
and
Beneficiaries
Association
and,
together
with
the
Maranhão
dam
and
the
Magos
dam,
feeds
the
Sorraia
Channel.

The
dam
has
a
capacity
of
164.3
hm³
and
its
flooded
area
is
1646
hectares.
It
has
a
maximum
discharge
capacity
of
765
m³/s.
The
crest
length
is
about
427
m,
with
an
embankment
volume
of
858,000
m³
and
a
height
above
the
natural
terrain
of
36
m.
It
has
a
hydroelectric
power
station
equipped
with
a
Francis
turbine
that
produces
an
average
year
of
5.9
GWh.
The
dam's
reservoir
is
widely
used
for
water
sports,
sport
fishing
and
nature-related
activities
such
as
bird
watching.
