Definitely not for every tourist. It is a huge market, filthy, unorganized and with a certain sense of being somewhat dangerous. I didn't feel unsafe but we were followed several times by locals, certainly not very well intended. But it is an adventure, an experience, and I loved it. I certainly recommend it, but only if you feel like you have the guts for it. (you see every part of an animal's body on display there!) The produce there is amazing and you can literally find just about everything that you need, from a to z! It's Colombia and Cartagena at its best, and it's nice to go out of the walled city and live an authentic experience. Also there's loads of food stalls that you can buy and try local food of! Keep your wallet and documents at home (take just some cash in small bills), don't take your expensive camera with you and don't flash your cellphone around, keep your wits about your surroundings there, and you should be fine. It also helps if you know some Spanish.

Amazing experience, but not for everyone. It's an amazing experience, it's gritty, you're surrounded by seemingly thousands of people; noise bustling pushing smells sights and amazing observations. It's not for everyone so to be clear this is not a touristy thing to do you're not going to come here with your friends or with your kids and have an entertaining experience. The traffic is crazy, the noise is over bearing, but it's really an amazing experience if you enjoy that element of travel. Some people have posted about safety. I can tell you I didn't observe a moment of fear or questioning my safety at all. Everyone there is just doing their business and going about their day and very welcoming to the visitors who come there. At the same time you have to be wise to being a visitor in another country with where your wallet is with where your cash is with how you're handling yourself and behaving. Just remain self-aware try to behave in a humble manner, behave, you'll be fine. Lots of stands with fish, yeah it smells but no big deal, and there's another section for the meats that can be something difficult to see if you're not accustomed to it. And then the fruit stands and it goes on forever and there's another section where people are making amazing dishes for lunch that's two or three dollars it's a delicious meal. I hired a guide who knows the market extremely well he was very helpful negotiated some things for me showed me around introduced me to friends of his who's a super experience.

I love these markets. You can spend hours, without spending a dime, and find anything you need. If you can't find it here you probably don't need it. Haha It does smell, it is a bit muddy, it's alive and wonderful. I did not feel uncomfortable in any way, but I come from a big city, and do a fair amount of traveling. The number one reason I recommend going here is to see what everyday life looks like in Cartagena and to get out of your comfort zone (think walled city). Throw in some haggling and a local meal and you have the makings for a great day. If that doesn't do it for you then look around and appreciate you don't have this where you live. There is always an upside if you just look for it. Safe travels my friends. Also you can catch a boat to Playa Blanca here for $40,000 pesos each way (the tour I was offered in the walled city was $70,000 round trip with lunch, but the start time wss 7a). Just walk to the water at the very back of the market and ask someone near a boat.

I had a wonderful experience at this market. It is in the REAL CARTAGENA, away from the touristy part. The famous Anthony Bourdain (RIP) visited here once. I knew what to expect since I have been to similar markets around the world. Of course the smell of fish and other things were present. Yes, it looked kind of gritty. But never forget that hard-working people work here and make a living. They were extremely friendly and welcoming to me. I interacted well with many here and they invited me to take lots of photos and videos. I bought a few items, some food and some paintings. I had a truly amazing and memorable experience here.

Wonderful day visiting this market. I went with a little tour run by Inside Tours. The market doesn't feel dangerous at all, but it is large and the tour, which was low key and felt like wondering round the market with a friend, made it accessable. I was worried it was going to be poverty tourism. But it wasn't in the end. Just a really fun day looking under the cover of how the city works.

It is my third time I went to the market. This time with a Peruvian friend and I showed him the cartagena gastronomy. Recommendation, do not go after 2:00 pm because food is good but, there is not much variety. Most restaurants were sold out, I will recommend you to go brunch time to get the best fresh and different variety of dishes.

Such a great experience! Had a delicious meal at Cecilia’s and was able to support local vendors. Daniel gave us an excellent tour of the market- you can find him on Airbnb experiences! One of the highlights of our trip

I went to these markets thinking it would be a great spot to see local products of Colombia, but I felt incredibly unsafe. Lots of people staring me and my partner up and down and I was sure we were being followed at some point. It started off ok, but the deeper into the market, the more sure I was that we should not be here. Took a while to get an Uber so we hopped into the first taxi we found. Maybe ok in large groups, but honestly not even worth it then.

Be sure to have Carolina of Oh La La Restaurant as your guide! Message her to set up a time and then take her cooking class at the restaurant. The experience costs 350,000 pesos and well worth it! Delicious dishes, seeing the market. Best experience wile in Cartagena!

This is an aggressive Latin American market. Nothing tourist about. Amazing sights and smells. Wear good shoes because it’s a mess and leave jewelry at home. Never felt in danger but it is crowded in some places and you don’t want to lose something important to a pick pocket. People are so nice, posing for pictures and offering tastes.

My girlfriend and I went here and our Uber driver told us this is awfully dangerous, even for locals. He wished us luck as we stepped out of the car and we immediately understood why. It smells bad, the streets are filled with dirt and we felt really odd and unsafe as western tourists. I put away my watch and phone and we immediately got ourselves an Uber back to the old town of Cartagena. Waiting for our Uber was the longest wait in my life lol. Definitely DO NOT GO HERE by yourselves.

Cartagena's traditional market, where you can try some local food and check out life outside the city walls. Worth the trip!

Topical Colombian markets. You can buy cloths, fresh veggies, meet and fish. It’s about a 8,000 peso taxi ride from the Old City.

Get off the beating path and go to the Bazurto market. Find a Bazurto Market Ambassador and get to know a piece of history. It's worth the trip and you'll get to taste some amazing food.

Incredible experience! great people, fresh quality food, and very busy. Be ready for aggressive street vendors, but they are very nice and respectable. I never felt unsafe at any time. Feel, free to walk away, and if the seller wants your business, they will initiate negotiations. Exeperience and enjoy! Loved it!

(Translated by Google) Few places better portray the idiosyncrasies and the pace of Cartagena as the market Basurto. It is one of the oldest and most popular markets in the Caribbean. There is everything and when I say everything includes some things aboveboard. Nor it is far from a tourist place. Must withstand extreme heat, smells ugly and messy logic of a place that has not changed its essence despite all attempts by the authorities there. It is the very essence of trade and free enterprise led to the basics. Recommend to your visitors, extreme security measures and get its halls, eat right there eating food workers and tour the market in the morning.
