This is the church of San Pedro Claver de Cartagena. A Spanish priest Pedro Claver came to Columbia during the building of the fort. The fort was built by thousands of slaves shipped here by the Spanish. Pedro was appalled by their treatment and moved to help them. He dedicated the rest of his life to ministering to the slaves. He called himself “a slave to the slaves”. He is highly revered and the church conferred sainthood on Pedro in the 1800s. The church is beautiful. There are lovely stained glass windows. San Pedro himself is entombed in the altar in a glass coffin. The side rooms contain many wonderful paintings and carved statues. In the center courtyard, there large trees and plantings. It is a working Catholic Church and you can attend mass there.

The complex is attached to the church with a small museum of colonial paintings and sculptures. But the central courtyard with 3 levels of arched openings is more impressive. Good view of Boca Grande from one of those windows on the second floor. Third floor is being set up for the Afro-Caribbean experience, should be interesting to see once done.

Not sure why the church is not open to the public. They charge foreigners more, but there is no guide available at all. Would have been nice to actually know the history of the place.

A muted cathedral with beautiful stained glass windows. Lovely history of Saint Peter Claver and his advocacy and care of indigenous peoples and African slaves. Truly inspiring and definitely worth a visit.

The Sanctuary takes you through the history of San Pedro Claver who dedicated most of his life to evangelizing slaves in Cartagena during the 1600’s. He was canonized as a saint in 1888 by Pope Leo XIII. You can spend a good hour or so touring the church, garden, artwork, and the rooms where Claver lived and worked. Highly recommend a visit if you’re in Cartagena.

Check the opening time before you go. On the day when we were there the church was closed until the evening, so unfortunately I didn't get to see it inside. Enjoyed watching the busy and lively area surrounding it.

The church of the Santuario de San Pedro Claver (1580-1654) in Cartagena, Colombia, was constructed of limestone brought from nearby Isla de Tierra Bomba. Originally a Jesuit church, it suffered serious damage during the republican upheavals of the mid 19th century. The remains of Catholic saint San Pedro Claver are beneath the high altar. The rose window depicts the Jesuit saint preaching to black slaves. The Oratorio contains a painting of Claver, the "Slave of slaves forever", of his death bed surrounded by black converts. Claver has been called the "Patron of Human Rights" for his work evangelizing the enslaved Africans of New Granada.

Visiting here is a must for understanding a very important person in Cartagena's history, Spanish history even. Read up on the man before you go. Spend the money on the guide.

Beautiful looking ancient church. I had the fortune of seeing a wedding happening as I passed by. It’s nice to have a meal and drink in the plaza next to this church. Be wary of peddlers though, simply say no or wave them off, they will generally walk away and leave you alone.

Great place to hang out with ice-cream in your hand. Get little crowdy during weekend. Have great out sitting restaurant where you watch people walking. People will try to sell you stuff there but don’t be scared they are just trying to live by.

I visited for a wedding. The church was absolutely beautiful. The church also has an amazing tour that allows you to learn more about St. Pedro Claver and to see the amazing art, stained glass, and architecture.

Lovely historic old town area. Well worth visiting at night when all the lights give it an inviting picturesque atmosphere. Bountiful restaurants, stores and street artists can be found here. Horse carriages are available for those who prefer not to walk.

Beautiful old church dedicated to a man who served slaves in the City. Important part of brutal history - lots of good info and art in the adjoining museum.
