Such a calm, tranquil, relaxing place to visit. I spent about 2 hours here walking around taking pictures in the fresh, fresh Air, surrounded by vegetation. (For a $10 entrance fee, it was a great excursion from San Jose and a great visit after the Volcano)! Going... San Jose to Cartago and then Volcano Irazu. Bus - 7:50 am, be in front of the National Cathedral. Cross the treet to catch the bus to volcano Irazu, leaves at 8am (cost 2,905 col and arrives Volcano at about 10:30). I believe another bus leaves San Jose later (12:30) but won't allow enough time for all the activities! Return... 12:15 bus leaving from Volcano Irazu to "Cartago-San Jose." Another bus leaves at 3:15, to only Cartago, where you'll have to catch the train or a bus back to San Jose! Once in Cartago, take a bus to "Paraíso de Cartago." Stop before arriving in Paraíso and walk 1\4 mile to the gardens. Visit for a couple of hours. On your return, take the bus to "Cartago" or Cartago-San Jose" but stop again before arriving to the center. Walk a couple blocks north to "Basílica de Los Angeles" and visit "La Negrita." Spend about an hour there. Eat dinner in the city and then take the train, behind the Basilica, back to to San Jose (I took the 6:25pm train but I believe the last train is another at 6:55? Any later than that and you'll have to take a bus back to San Jose!

Beautiful, well organized, interesting. This is an amazing botanical garden with plants from all over the world. They have a fantastic orchid collection and I liked how they grouped plants so you can compare similar plants from across the globe. This is family friendly as you can make it a short or long trip depending on the patience of the individuals in your group. Most of it was wheelchair accessible. The bathrooms were clean. There was no cost for parking and you can park at the site (I am not sure about overflow parking)

This is a beautiful garden. There are a variety of plants. The pathways are very thoughtfully created. We were so lucky to visit during the bonsai tree presentation. They had both professional Bonsai artists and amateur Bonsai artists. The trees were beautifully presented in both categories.

If you are a horticultural aficionado, this is a wonderful stop to view the various tropical plants alongside many species of orchids and bromelias. There is an outdoor space for picnics and lounging on the grass. I saw barbecues being done as well. The gardens are lovely and will take 1.5 hours to 2 hrs to complete. Orchids, succulents, and bromelias are available for purchase.

I am in love with this garden that every time I visit I feel like I don’t want to leave! From magic orchids to real Zen gardens this place is a hidden gem in Cartago. Lovely spots to just sit and meditate or bring someone to have a picnic or a photo session with. Super educational, you not even need a guide, there are signs with lots of information. Easy access even for wheelchairs. Aplace you don’t want to miss if you are in the area. Enjoy the walk!

For the price I paid this was worth the price. Its a beautiful garden with many differentiating facets and nuances. Each view wont blow u away like hiking the forest of Costa Rica but its worth the trip for a quiet, relaxing tour of the greenerie of CR.

Lancaster Gardens is an amazing place to visit if you're in the Orosei Valley area. Many beautiful flowers, including orchids, are displayed here by the Costa Rican University system. Well worth the money.

Beautiful garden, and I have never seen so many orchids. They had hundreds of them and all blooming. This is a 26-acre park, and you can see all of it in a leisurely stride in about an hour or so. We happened to stumble in on a Sunday, and they were lots of families having picnics and just hanging out. There are different themed areas in the gardens, including a koi pond and plenty of incredible plant life to explore. The cafe was closed due to covid, but the gift shop was open, and the day we stopped in, there was a food vendor in the park. Parking can be limited and the road to the garden is very rough. Well worth the visit.

The place created in 1973 with love and gratitude to nature. We saw that founder of this garden was even buried here. You will feel how this place is gorgeous! Super beautiful cafe, orchid garden, Japan garden and many other corners of this huge forest.

👍👍 A beautiful valley, very friendly people, it has a colonial church, a sports plaza, you can also go to the Orosi viewpoint, the Tapantí National Park or nearby places like Cachí, Ujarras, among others.
