I visited Dr. James K. Liu last year for a brain tumor. He said that because you are obese, you should have bariatric surgery before brain surgery. I underwent bariatric surgery based on his advice. A few months after the bariatric surgery, an MRI of the brain showed that the tumor had grown. I underwent brain surgery with another neurosurgeon, and the pathology result showed the tumor was cancerous. I received two months of high-dose radiation therapy followed by six months of intensive chemotherapy. I am currently losing significant weight and am vitamin deficient. My health is in serious jeopardy, which has my care team extremely concerned about the side effects of bariatric surgery. I DO NOT RECOMMEND DR. LIU.

I am grateful to share my successful experience following the removal of a large pituitary adenoma compressing my optic chiasm resulting in vision loss. Dr. Liu at Saint Barnabas Medical Center/Rutgers Neurosurgery operated on me and postop evaluation showed complete removal. My vision improved immediately with preservation of the normal pituitary gland. Dr. Liu and his team were amazing. I am so grateful to them all.

I had Trigeminal Neuralgia and was suffering from severe facial pain, even on a high dose of meds. It was a very rough time for me. My life revolved around the facial pain. I did some research and found only a few neurosurgeons in NJ that have a good amount of experience with this condition. Dr. Liu seemed to be one of the best and that turned out to be true. Youā€™ll find that he has videos and articles regarding Trigeminal Neuralgia. I was able to get a first appointment quickly. During that appointment, Dr. Liu patiently asked questions, listened, and answered my questions. He then provided all of the options. I went for an endoscopic-assisted Microvascular Decompression (MVD). I had the surgery in July 2021. I was totally pain free without meds right after surgery. It was a night and day difference. Currently, I am still pain free without meds, and with no facial numbness, no hearing loss, and no other major side effects from surgery. Dr. Liu has great bedside manners and answered all of my questions in the follow-up appointments. If you have a condition that Dr. Liu specializes in, I highly recommend him. Thank you, Dr. Liu!

Dr. Liu was an amazing neurosurgeon. He had removed a large pituitary tumor through my nose and had completely reversed my blurred vision. Speaking as a nurse he had great bedside manner and was very knowledgeable in his speciality. He made me feel comfortable when dealing with brain surgery and made sure I knew what to expect. I had the best experience and if anyone needs a neurosurgeon I believe he is choice #1!!

Two days before my husbandā€™s birthday, he suffered his first seizure. We learned that he also had an aneurysm and a large brain arteriovenous malformation (AVM) that would need to be removed. Dr. James Liu was his surgeon and was so kind and caring and answered the myriad of questions that I had about the surgery (my husband was not in the position to be able to ask questions at the time). I felt such comfort and peace after we spoke, and I knew that my husbandā€™s life would be saved by Dr. Liu. It felt like I was talking to a member of family, not someone whom I had just met. My husbandā€™s surgery was performed by Dr. Liu at University Hospital, Rutgers Neurosurgery. Not only was the large tumor completely removed, but my husband also had no complications. When my husband had his follow-up appointment, Dr. Liu took as much time as my husband needed to answer all of my husbandā€™s questions, and we know my husband will make a full recovery. I cannot tell you how grateful we are that we had Dr. Liu as my husbandā€™s surgeon, and if you have to go through a serious procedure like this, Dr. Liu is amazing. If you are reading this, I wish you the best.

Reassuring and skilled I was diagnosed with a large Acoustic Neuroma in August 2023 and was told the best course of treatment was surgery. My world came crashing down. I was referred to Dr.Liu for a consultation. We returned home and a short time later received a phone call from Dr. Liu who said he would review my mri and set up an appointment for the following week. Once my wife and I met Dr. Liu we knew we were in good hands. He took the time to explain what we were facing and how he thought it should be dealt with. We had questions and he took the time to answer and explain each in detail. He reassured us that he has removed many of these tumors with great success. The most important thing he was concerned about was preserving the facial nerve. I had a 7 hour surgery on 10/2/23 and walked myself out of the hospital on 10/4/23 . Although he could not save the cochlear nerve, and as a result lost my hearing on the left side, he was able to preserve the facial nerve as we hoped. Dr.Liu is highly recommend! At 24 years old, I was unfortunately diagnosed with a schwannoma tumor in the C2 spinal cord area (my neck). Words cannot describe how terrified I was. I was suffering from severe headaches, and my tumor compressed my spinal cord which caused severe motor weakness. Thankfully, I am incredibly blessed to have met Dr. James Liu because he SAVED my life and will forever be my personal hero! He successfully and completely removed my large C2 spinal schwannomaĀ at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center/Rutgers Neurosurgery. I can testify that post-op, his performance improved my motor function significantly and he preserved my the spinal cord function! Furthermore, Dr. Liu an exceptionally brilliant, skilled, and compassionate neurosurgeon! He is extremely patient and considerate towards you. He always takes his time in explaining everything whilst making sure youā€™re comfortable. Throughout the whole journey, he remains reachable with you for any questions/concerns. I can attest to everyone that he puts his patients first and foremost! He provides outstanding patient care. Additionally, his neurosurgery/neurology team were excellent and knowledge too. I am incredibly honored to have had him as my neurosurgeon, and will always be grateful for him. I recommend him with no hesitation!

Dr. Liu handled my case with care and compassion. I was diagnosed and referred from out of state for his ability to operate on tricky brain tumors. We traveled over 3 hours to have him operate on my intraventricular central neurocytoma (brain tumor). His results were phenomenal and our after care has been nothing short of amazing. I cannot thank him enough for giving me my life back!

Dr James K. Liu is the best! I canā€™t thank him enough for taking my case. In March I started to lose movement on the right side of my body starting with the leg then moving to the upper body. After having an MRI done at a chiropractor office near me we discovered that I had a brain tumor caused by melanoma from a past surgery 4 years prior. After discovering the tumor I was directed to Dr Liu on Monday, March 21st, he has the tumor out on Thursday that same week. I and very blessed and thankful to him and his team. I still have a ways to go with the metastatic melanoma but I have most the movement back in my right side again and the tumor is gone. He preformed a awake craniotomy with motor mapping. I was open to the awake since he said it was the best method to preform it due to the severity of the tumor location and the fact that I could lose movement in my right side. I will say I didnā€™t feel a thing while being awake during surgery and was able to even ask questions and respond to anything that he and his team asked. He saved my life and now am able to see my kids grow up and came out of the operation with 95% of my movement immediately after the surgery and with the PT I am receiving will be able to recover the rest. Dr James K Liu is best in NJ! Thank you again.

Dr Liu saved my life. Some years ago I found out quite suddenly I had a brain tumor. It was on the pituitary gland near the ocular nerve. After many visits to other doctors , who just told me to wait and see, I was finally lead to Dr Liu and his wonderful staff at UMDNJ. He took quick action and let me know I was losing my sight by waiting. He immediately scheduled the removal of my pituitary tumor by using an endoscopic endonasal transspehnoidal approach . A procedure that is done through the nose and leaves no scar. They removed the tumor, saved my vision and preserved my pituitary gland function. I owe them everything. I follow up with Dr James K. Liu routinely and confirm the success of his work !!

Dr Liu has performed 2 surgeries on my oldest daughter. The first was an emergency surgery in 2020 to remove a very large craniopharyngioma. He performed an endoscopic endonasal surgery. The 2nd surgery in 2023 to remove 2 new tumors. I am forever grateful to Dr Liu for saving my daughter's life and his expertise in performing this type of surgery.

Dr Liu is an amazing neurosurgeon. My craniotomy was in December 2020. He completely removed my tumor which was a diffuse astrocytoma, IDH mutant, WHO grade 2. He was so helpful with explaining everything to me and also always answering my emails/questions right away. I so thankful that I found him. I had another MRI last month and everything still looks good. I highly recommend him to anyone in need of a neurosurgeon.

Mommaā€™s Story: On July 6th, 2021, my Mom at 72 years of age, very active physically and mentally suffered a brain aneurysm. The neurosurgeon for that procedure was none other than Dr. James K Liu, and with his team, some deep prayers and hopes of a miracle, we proceeded with what would be the most heart wrenching undertaking we would ever face. We all went home that night and just waited for that phone call that would reveal the outcome, in hopes that it would be a miraculous oneā€¦and so after quite a few hours, that phone call finally came through. I remember picking up that phone and hearing Dr. James K Liuā€™s voice, not knowing what the outcome was. As he let me know exactly what was done within the procedure, (which sounded like the most nail biting thing ever), he advised that the post op would be crucial in finding out if anything concerning my Momā€™s functionality was compromised. Dr. James K Liu assured me that the operation was a success, and with care in the ICU, my Mom would be in good hands. Dr. James K Liu couldnā€™t be more right, the attention to detail, precision and outstanding work by him, his colleagues and the rest of the team at University Hospital, my Mom was aliveā€¦and it couldnā€™t get better than that, but it did. With each passing day, the 24/7 care of the ICU staff, prayers, medicine, and pure hope, my Momā€™s progress was getting better and better. As the doctors and nurses would come by for her evaluation, they had determined that there was no compromise made from this procedure. Call it luck, medical science, love, fortitude, or as I would put it, Dr. James K Liuā€™s miraculous hands, there was no doubt in my mind at that precise time, we had a medical miracle, to say the least. My Mom was in the ICU for less time than what they expected, into her own room for less time than what was expected and into rehab for (yes, you guessed it), less time than expected. Momma was home from rehabilitation at Kessler Institute on July 31st, less than a month since her brain aneurysm operation. Words are not enough to express the gratitude we have for the unbelievable work that was done by Dr. James K Liu and his staff. I had the privilege to speak with Dr. James K Liu on August 31st via video chat for an update on my Momā€™s progress and his humbleness just added to the extraordinary work and knowledge he exudes. So as I end this story, I would just like to tell everyone how amazing it was to have had the guidance of someone who not only knows his occupation but who carries it out with poise, professionalism and extreme passion. I didnā€™t know much of what entailed when all this occurred as it was completely new to all of us. But with Dr. James K Liuā€™s clarification we had a much clearer understanding of it all. I am and will always be grateful for Dr. James K Liu and his team. Their miraculous performance with this procedure gave us all a second chance to be with the most amazing person I know and I am blessed to have her in my life. I am not a patient of Dr. James K Liu, but the son of someone who is, and I couldnā€™t be more elated with such an amazing outcome. Thank you Dr. James K Liu, colleagues and team for such a tremendous gift that you have given us. To give someone back their life is truly a blessing and I will be forever grateful and indebted for your service, kindness and superb knowledgeā€¦#TEAMLIUā€¦the best of the bestā€¦ā¤ļøšŸ„

Dr. Liu is unlike any doctor I've ever worked with! I found him through a paraganglioma support group and chose him to remove my glomus vagal tumor in May 2023. Surgeons at other prestigious hospitals told me that it would be highly unlikely to remove the entire tumor without sacrificing cranial nerves, but Dr. Liu did just that. I'm now 6 months post op, able to speak and swallow, and confirmed tumor free via PET scan. An incredibly caring and gifted physician.

Upon being diagnosed with a brain stem spinal cord cavernous malformation I was immediately referred to Dr. Liu as the best vascular neurosurgeon. We went to see Dr. Liu and he was confident that he could successfully remove the cavernoma. We placed our faith in Dr.Liu and proceeded with the surgery. The outcome was a complete removal of the tumor with normal neurological function. We can't say enough amazing things about Dr. Liu and his neurosurgical team. Dr. Liu did a fantastic job with a very difficult surgery. He is very personable and easy to talk with. He explains clearly all of the details and takes time to answer any questions. We are so grateful to have been referred to Dr. Liu and we can't thank him enough! He is truly the "BEST OF THE BEST!"

Dr Liu performed the removal of a large skull base meningioma on my wife at Cooperman Barnabas. The tumor was in a precarious vascular area and there was a high level of risk. My wife came out of the operation exactly the same neurologically as before with no speech or other physical issues. We consider ourselves extremely lucky to have Dr. Liu perform this operation. He was calm and professional. He was thorough in his explanations and responsive to questions before and after the surgery. His team was also respectful and professional. We can't thank Dr. Liu enough.

An Amazing Surgeon In September, my wife was diagnosed with a brain tumor after a scan was ordered by her ENT due to persistent headaches and a concerning CT scan. The next 48 hours were harrowing to say the least as there is so much fear and uncertainty when you hear brain tumor. We were fortunate (major understatement) that her ENT immediately referred her to Dr. Liu. Upon getting the referral I immediately did a Google search and was staggered to see the reviews on here about him, and his nearly flawless 5.0 rating. I have never searched up a business or doctor with a rating so high. Two days later we met with Dr. Liu at St Barnabas coming through the ER as he requested, and he meticulously took the time to answer all our questions and alleviate our worst fears. He certainly has earned his rating, My wife had a 5cm meningioma-based tumor removed yesterday and is on the road to recovery. Dr Liu is a skilled and compassionate, He is the whole package and worthy of the praise bestowed upon him here. -John

A coworker who had a brain tumor recommended Dr. James Liu. I consulated 3 different surgeons and felt most comfortable with Dr. Liu. My tumor turned out to be different and more involved than what the other doctors originally thought. Dr. Liu successfully removed a fibrous tumor of the cerebellopontine. Throughout the whole process, he explained everything and was always a call or text away to answer any questions or concerns I had. He even changed the date of my surgery so he was available to check in on me during the first week of recovery. I just had my 16 week post surgery visit and the MRI showed the tumor was completely gone. I am very thankful for Dr. James Liu.

Dr. Liu helped my mom recover from major headaches that she used to have. Just through conversation with my parents, I can tell how appreciative they were of Dr. Liu's efforts and that is something I will be forever thankful for. This post is long overdue, but I want to recognize the stellar work he has done and want to give him his flowers here.

I have been reflecting on the true impact that this exceptionally gifted man has had on my life. When I presented my case to him four years ago the vision in my right eye had been adversely affected by a meningioma that had literally taken hold in every nook and cranny of my skull. Doctors at another prestigious hospital had examined me, reviewed the MRI, and just told me there was nothing they could doā€”it was too dangerous to operate or treat me. The surgery performed by Dr. Liu was extremely successful. He was able to remove all of the tumor in my sinus area, and was able to debulk it in other areas. He removed bone from my skull in order to relieve pressure on my optic nerve, and he cut up the sheath of several nerves to relieve pressure on them. The fantastic news is that my vision has returned to normal, and the tumor has not regrown. I am able to return to life and enjoy my children and grandchildren. Dr. Liu has saved my vision, my ability to work and live as I would like to live, and to have a hopeful future. Words cannot express how truly grateful I am to this very humble and exceptionally gifted man.

Today, June 4, 2022, we celebrate one year since my endoscopic endonasal pituitary tumor was removed by Dr. James K. Liu at Saint Barnabas in Livingston, NJ! The macroadenoma was larger than originally expected, presenting a challenge to Dr. Liu and his team at the time of surgery. Dr. Liu has been described by his colleagues as having ā€œmagic hands.ā€ I will certainly confirm that! He was able to preserve to normal function of my pituitary gland which is great! But better than that, he was able to save and improve my vision! As a Kitchen & Bath Designer this was extremely important!!! So, thank you Dr. Liu you literally gave me a new and improved outlook on life!!!

I do reside in the State on Kentucky. I was diagnosed with a brain tumor in February 2021. I was told in the Cancer Center in this state that due to the location of the tumor it was inoperable. The tumor was located in the left side of my brain almost on the bottom, close to my memory and speech area. In May of 2021 an MRI showed the tumor getting bigger and dangerously closed to the memory area and surgery was recommended letting me know I may die, be in a comma, or have a stroke in the process. I decided to get a second opinion and went to New Jersey to talk to Dr. James Liu, he was really helpful expediting all the tests I had to complete and he took a look at my MRI and mentioned to me he was able to safely removed that tumor. It was great news for me and my family to hear this, as the feedback in Kentucky regarding the tumor being inoperable or me dying during the surgery was really scaring us. I proceeded to go ahead and have surgery with Dr Liu, the surgery took place at the Saint Barnabas Hospital located in Livingston, NJ and lasted around 6 to 7 hours. I woke up a few hours after the surgery feeling surprisingly good. I was out of the hospital on day 3 and came back to Kentucky to continue my recovery here 3 weeks after the surgery. The recovery process has been pretty good. Up and downs as with every recovery process but no need to go back to a hospital. Before the surgery the main concerns for me were the vision and the facial nerve function. But the only thing affected after the surgery was the vision and it recovered by itself 3 months after the surgery. It has been almost 4 months after the surgery and everyday I feel more back to normal and I will be back to work this week. Big thanks to Dr. Liu and his team for saving my life, allowing me to stay with my family, and giving me a second chance.

It has been over 2 years since my surgery for a large meningioma brain tumor. Just had a follow-up MRI. All looks good. Very happy with my recovery. I had severe tinnitus in both ears prior to the surgery. Since my surgery, it is gone! Dr. Liu is an extremely skilled neurosurgeon. He listens to your concerns and questions and puts you at ease. His confidence in the treatment of my condition was encouraging and comforting. I am bald and if people do not know me, you could not notice any scar! Sounds silly, but Dr. Liu is amazing. I am so thankful that I chose him to treat me. Thank you Dr. Liu! Jefffey H

Dr. Liu saved my life! After experiencing severe headaches for an extended period of time I was diagnosed with a Meningioma In June 2021 Dr. Liu performed a craniotomy where he successfully removed the tumor. The tumor type and coverage was exactly what he suspected, his comprehensive knowledge in this field is phenomenal! I had met nurses and doctors from other hospitals who know his work and told me Iā€™m in the BEST hands. Dr. Liu is kind, patient, and personable, one of the finest doctor Iā€™ve ever met. Iā€™m 3 months post-op, headache free and back to my normal routine all thanks to Dr. Liu and his team!
