This historical monument was built by Eugène Lendrat and it was À CHURCH CALLED :Église SAINTE MARGUERITE. WHEN THE EUROPÉENNE COMMUNITY LEFT THE DISTRICT OF ROCHES NOIRES .IT REMAINED EMPTY AND CLOSE FOR NEARLY 30 YEARS . UNTIL THE KING HASSAN 2 bought the church from the heirs of the Lendrat family and turned it into a mosque by giving it the name of the mosque of ELQODS

Old church tranformed into mosque 🕌 Al-Quds Mosque formerly Église de Sainte Marguerite, is a mosque in the Roches Noires neighborhood of Casablanca, Morocco. It was originally built as a church built in a Neo-Gothic style, but it was converted into a mosque after Morocco's independence. (Translated by Google) In the early 1920s and with the aim of making it the economic capital of Morocco, the city of Casablanca saw the start of its development and transformation into an industrial city. At that time, a large European community came to settle in the Roches Noires district, the former industrial district of Casablanca. The increase in the Christian population of the district created the need for a place of worship, so Eugène Lendrat, the main developer of the Roches Noires district at the time, decided to build a church in his own right. fresh and on one of its grounds. Lendrat took as a model for his project the Church of Saint-Martin in Pau, his birthplace. The Church of Sainte Marguerite was inaugurated in December 1929 in memory of the mother of its founder. After the death of Eugène Lendrat in 1931, a problem of transfer of ownership of the church arose and remained unresolved for several decades. In the early 1970s and following the departure of a large part of the European population who lived in Casablanca, the Church of Sainte Marguerite was emptied and coveted for other uses. In 1981, the church was finally ceded to the commune of Ain-Sebaa, which transformed it into the Al-Quds mosque. The transformation of the Church of Saint Marguerite into a mosque has raised many questions, the study of its history has allowed some answers to be answered without revealing everything. Now, the appearance of the monument has changed slightly, as has its vocation, but this has not prevented it from remaining a witness to the period of the protectorate in Morocco.

I lived right next to it and I am so sad this was converted into a mosque. I completely understand how much a mosque means to muslims but I also think this is disrespectful for a chruch to be converted into a mosque. There are still many christians in Casablanca and many of them are African immigrants who deserve to have a great pleace of worship. I would have preferred if they restored it as a church instead of converting it into a mosque. Most lf the churches in Casablanca are now becoming either mosques, culturel center, or art galleries which is so sad.
