The Citadel of Cascais is a set of fortifications built between the 15th and 17th centuries to defend the Cascais coastline and River Tagus estuary and to protect against attacks on the capital of Portugal, Lisbon. Today the castle overlooks the exclusive Cascais marina and the complex has been transformed into an exclusive hotel.

Very well organised tour. You will get an in-depth travel through the Portuguese past, relationships with other countries that go waaaaay back, beautiful gifts from other rulers of old . Everything is kept pristine and functional and the place was even used as an official residence quite recently. Worth a visit.

Thought I was walking into a fort but instead found myself walking into a beautiful courtyard surrounded by art galleries, tavern, bookstore, sitting areas, and the most impressive sculptures both in the front and back. There's a modern 5-star hotel at one end with a very impressive lobby. Great place if you want to have some quiet time away from the crowded bustling streets of Cascais. I'm not sure if there was anything else inside the fortress but this area alone made it worthwhile.

Beautiful place to visit in Cascais, its located near the beach, just a few steps, walk around and feel the special atmosphere of this magical small town, there's nice restaurants all over the place, and you better taste the fresh fishes with a glass of port wine 🍷, the open blue ocean make the moment so special and unique. 😍 This area is fantastic for handling around in the evening and it is recommended.

The Citadel of Cascais is a historic fortress located in the charming coastal town of Cascais, Portugal. The citadel was built in the 15th century to protect the town from pirate attacks, and it has since been restored and converted into a cultural and tourist center. The citadel is an impressive sight, with its imposing walls and towers overlooking the sea. Inside, visitors can explore the various buildings that make up the complex, including the Governor's Palace, the Chapel of Our Lady of the Assumption, and the Cidadela Art District. The buildings are beautifully preserved and offer a glimpse into the history and culture of Cascais.

My first negative opinion in Portugal. Why? Thu 02 Jun afternoon around 1600-entered the palace. Two ladies behind counter. Can i visit the palace? Yes, but only with a guide (WHY???) Bit surprised but: OK, please get me one One of them calling/talking on the phone Sir, unfortunatelly the guide is not available today-please come on Fri or Sat. Left the place. To be clear-this place supposed to be open the whole week except Mondays.

(Translated by Google) This palace of the citadel of Cascais is quite interesting since it has a lot of antiquity it was built it seems to me that in the 16th century by bricklayers who were walking around and it is pretty good that it is also not to shoot rockets because the design is quite simple very very squared and the walls are painted a color that is not the best but still fulfills its function.

More than disappointing. This is the second time we have tried to see the Palace. This time we purchased a 3-day museum pass from the Cultural Center that should have provided our admission, but when we arrived at the Palace (after their noon break) we were told that there was no room for us and that we had to make a reservation. We had no problems getting into any of the other museums with the pass with no reservations. Why is the Palace so special? Is it simply a problem with staffing, competency or both? Helpful Hint: There are so many more wonderful places to visit in Cascais. Skip the Palace, avoid the disappointment and see instead the Condes de Castro Guimarães Museum, the Santa Maria House, the Santa Maria Lighthouse, and the Town Museum.

Great place. It was a pleasure to walk through its rooms with understanding that all the things are still used by the President of Portugal. Our guide told us that anytime even during our excursion he can receive a call about an unexpected visit of the president)

We wanted to visit today at aroun 11-11.30 but one of the ladies at the counter said that the only english tour was at 4 pm (there were 3 or 4 at the counter than than the lady that sold the tickets). How precious can this palace be that needs a tour?

My family, some friends, and I went to visit this Palace today. It is a unique cultural experience. The guide, Luis, creates a great active learning environment making history come alive. We can vividly imagine the past and present life of the Palace. All the staff was exceedingly friendly.

It was the best guided visit of a palace I've ever done. Moreover, I was the only person on the tour so I could ask the guide all the questions I wanted about the palace and Portuguese history. She was able to answer all my questions and, days later, I can still remember most of what she said because she used anecdotes to tell me about historical events. Also, the palace is stunning. The furniture is very beautiful. My favourite was the bathroom furniture covered in gorgeous azulejos! Big plus: the entrance fee is very cheap. I would 100% recommend!

This is an amazing star/bastion fort. Because it has civilian buildings, it is a citadel. There's also a lighthouse at the end.
