An incredible plaza with lots of people meeting to eat and drink and enjoy the view. Our guide told us it was built in the 17th century and it has lots of great restaurants and coffee shops. We popped by the tourism office in the plaza and gathered lots of great information as well. Would definitely recommend spending an evening here.

Visited Placa Major de Salamanca recently and was totally taken by its charm. This square is the beating heart of Salamanca, with its vibrant atmosphere and stunning Baroque architecture. Day or night, the place is buzzing with energy, filled with locals and tourists alike enjoying a cup of coffee, indulging in authentic Spanish cuisine, or simply soaking up the sun.The intricately carved facades make for a great backdrop for photos. It's easy to lose track of time here, just people-watching or admiring the historical architecture. Street musicians often grace the square with live performances, adding a soundtrack to the already picturesque setting.Whether you're looking for a relaxed afternoon, a lively evening, or a deep dive into Spanish culture, Placa Major de Salamanca has it all. A must-visit if you find yourself in Salamanca!

Plaza Mayor is large and beautiful public square as well as a popular gathering place in the heart of Salamanca. It is based on the design of Baroque architect Alberto Churriguera (1729-55) and today is a large open space surrounded by ornate sandstone facades, three levels high on all sides. There is an arched walkways on each side with six entrances into the square. The covered walkways are lined with restaurants, ice-cream shops, coffee shops, bars and small retail shops. Plenty of alfresco seating throughout as well. The charming City Hall building is on the north side of the square. It features five granite arches with medallions of historic figures in between. The facade is heavily ornamental in Baroque. There are many hanging flags, a decorative steeple w/ clock, bell & allegorical figures. Plaza Mayor is an atmospheric location, a neat spot to relax at one of the many venues that line the square to enjoy its beautiful setting and charming environs while you are in Salamanca. It is good to see at day with deep blue skies as well as night time when the full interior of Plaza Mayor is lit up with light floodlights.

Night visit is the usual recommended activity, but try to go there early morning just as the shops are setting up: the streets are newly washed and there isnt a lot of people around; you'll have the place to yourselves. Illumination for the upper levels of the building is turned off past midnight, just the lower level lights are on, so you might not get your desired lighting effect for your Insta (but night mode setting will do).

This square with a portico is the heart of Madrid of the Austrias, the old part of the city and one of the most charming neighbourhoods. Before Madrid became a capital of large avenues and boulevards, its map was made up of small streets and alleys, which today transport us to the times of swordsmen and rogue characters. The Plaza Mayor began to be built on the grounds of the old Plaza del Arrabal, where the most popular market in the town was located, at the end of the 15th century, when Felipe II's court moved to Madrid. In 1617, the architect Juan Gómez de Mora was commissioned to give uniformity to the buildings of this place, which for centuries hosted popular festivities, bullfights, beatifications, coronations of kings and also autos-da-fé.

Plaza Mayor is often referred was the most beautiful plaza in Spain. I haven’t seen enough to comment, but it’s definitely a stunner. Surrounded by four main gates and beautiful stomework and iron balconies, it is a beautiful sight by day or night. There are a plethora of eateries where you can enjoy a drink while soaking up the view.

One of the most beautiful Plaza Mayors in Spain. Various events, concerts and celebrations take place here throughout the year. It's a constantly moving square. If you come to Salamanca, do not return without visiting this place. However, be careful when choosing restaurants here. Because it is a touristic place, restaurants may not offer the desired quality.
