My birth experience here was nothing like UPMC acted like it would be. When we arrived I was already having intense and frequent contractions and the front desk staff were rude to my husband when he asked if they could provide a wheelchair for me. We waited in the check in room for over 30 minutes before being transferring to a triage room (think small old doctor's office room). After a short period we were on our way to the delivery room which was very nice, but the room we spent the least amount of time in. After having a c-section (and over 24 hours of being awake), we were told that no rooms were available in the maternity recovery wing so we had to stay in a curtained off room connected to a main hallway with no place for my husband to sleep and no food available because the kitchen was closed. The early morning staff were shouting to each other down the hallway at 3AM while we were attempting to sleep. The nurse felt bad and offered us a meal voucher for my husband which we appreciated. Once we were transferred to the maternity recovery wing we noticed that nearly every single room was available, so there was no good explanation as to why we weren't moved there sooner. The recovery room was uncomfortable and outdated compared to the delivery room. Some of the nurses were amazing and others acted miserable and nasty when I tried to ask questions or ask for help overnight. The doctors were all amazing, my anesthesiologist included, as were all of the residents. If I had to do it again, I wouldn't even consider setting foot in Magee if my insurance would allow me to go to a different hospital...

UPMC touts Magee as one the best hospitals in America. My wife is pregnant with our 3rd child and, without going into personal detail, both the 1st or 2nd delivery had comically incompetent situations occur. We recently went to the hospital with a complication for the 3rd baby, and the system is set up to fail. We were in there for nearly a week, and within the first 4 days we had moved rooms/departments 6x. A new doctor was put in charge of my wife's health almost every day. While a 'fresh' set of eyes sounds good, they no idea what we'd already been through and could only look at her HR/BP history and make assumptions. The continuity of care was terrible, and because of that I felt we were essentially being held against our will without being told WHY we needed to stay for another 24-48h of observation. After 4 days of hearing the same thing I got mad, and then magically meaningful progress was made. It shouldn't take someone raising their voice for doctors/nurses to explain to patients what the 'game plan' is in a concise, jargon free, manner

I regretfully had one of the most harrowing experiences of my life at UPMC Magee Hospital. Due to the carelessness and lack of attentiveness by the labor team, I was placed in a situation where I almost lost my life. The team allowed me to push for a staggering 6 hours, and instead of recognizing the potential risks and opting for safer alternatives, they recommended a forceps delivery. This not only posed an unnecessary risk to me but to my newborn as well. In addition to the birth ordeal, their postpartum support was equally lacking. I was hopeful for assistance in initiating breastfeeding, but their guidance was negligible, leading to further feelings of disappointment and failure. A moment that was supposed to be filled with joy and celebration was overshadowed by their medical negligence. I expected far better care and concern from a hospital of their repute. They failed me at a time when I most needed them.

If you are looking for holistic, comprehensive OB care for pregnancy, please look elsewhere. This was at Women Care Associates at Magee. I was told incorrect information to scare me into birth choices, unsupported when I asked questions, and the office staff is as unhelpful as a brick wall. They care about volume, not individualized patient care. Also, the nurses don't answer your questions when you call the nurse line. Basically, Google is your DR. I transferred before giving birth, however, I wouldn't go back here if my life depended on it.

Never come here for delivery of a baby, we ended up having to be admitted in the nicu, and once we were in the rooms they have no air circulation, every thing is dirty dusty and has black mold everywhere, after telling head of nicu nothing was done about it. The hvac unit filter and entire unit hasn't been serviced in months (i am a hvac professional)I have the pictures to prove it. They refused to allow us to go to a different Facility

This hospital is the best hospital I ever been too. I am in recovery and they have the best outpatient clinic where the nurses and staff all care about you and what your going through. I also have a social worker there and she is amazing goes beyond to help me out with resources and guidance. Also I had my son there and they saved me and my baby's life. Best care I ever had having a baby I definitely will be going back here if in the future I get pregnant again. All I can say is number one hospital in my book I do not go anywhere else.

If I could give zero stars I would. Had my first and absolutely last labor/delivery there. The lack of care I received was appalling. They neglect you. They don’t care whatsoever what the mothers birth plan or goals are for birth. They will push all meds on you whether you need/want them or not, will not let you do delayed cord clamping, will shove an IV in your elbow (instead of at wrist or forearm) when you asked/told them NOT to, and they will not allow you to change positions or walk during labor. I can go on with my stories but I’ll stop there. Definitely would NOT recommend.

The nurses and staff in labor and delivery get a 5 star❣️ However, the cafeteria is a disgrace! The so called food on the weekend had been sitting there for hours!! It was dried out and disgusting! My daughter was in for 48 hours and we were starving! Monday I thought it would be so much better? But there were a few more things to choose from but all was terrible!! No wonder everybody in the waiting room was ordering take out!! I have been in every hospital in Oakland and the north hills and the cafeterias have been wonderful and a place to relax!

I had wonderful pregnancy never missed appointment never had any problems or issues my doctor was amazing until I was called in to come give birth I had the worst experience of my life I was given medication to speed up my labor but my body wasn’t responding well to it I threw up multiple times throughout the night I voice my concerns to the nurse and they were ignored. She was so rude. She didn’t care if I was comfortable she kept telling me I was OK but I knew I wasn’t my child heart rate was up down finally I was rush to have a c-section after two & half long days of pain fast forward to now I have questions and concerns my child is autistic, but not only is my child autistic Nephew is autistic. My neighbor child is also autistic , my best friend twins are autistic. Another friend of mine child is autistic. People that I grew up with children also autistic in total 11 children that I know personally all born at Magee with in a year apart have autism can someone tell me why would that be it doesn’t make any sense none of us have it linked in our families the only thing that we have in common is a Magee hospital I can go on & on but I’ll stop here we need answers!

My daughter had to visit this hospital back on 11/01/22. She had tripped on a curb and broke her elbow. Upon arrival, they took all her paperwork and checked her in. She continued to wait for over 3.5 hours to be seen. Nobody ever arrived or checked in on her. She left and wait to another local hospital and was taken care of right away. We received a bill for her copay for $150 which we rightly refuse to pay, our insurance company paid their part of $420. We did not get the medical attention that was needed, so why would you pay for something you did not receive. You got paid $420 for filling out paperwork, which in my opinion you should not have, that should be also be contested. If you went to a restaurant and didn’t get service, would you be expected to pay the bill? Now they have sent it to collections, and we received our first notice. Simply put, you are not getting paid for something you failed to do. It’s a pretty simple business practice.

During my two day stay at Magee-4100 Surgical Services I was very unimpressed. I was a patient on the 4th floor from Friday, 11/17 through Sunday, 11/19/23. The nursing staff was very inadequate and it wasn’t due to being understaffed. I wasn’t supposed to get out of bed unassisted but out of pure necessity (and a lot of pain) I had to basically take care of myself my entire stay. Other than administering drugs the nursing staff provided no other services. There are many other examples I could give but I don’t want to write an entire book! I would never recommend this hospital to anyone. UPMC - you need to get control of this situation and start monitoring the care of your patients.

Best of the best in hospitals!! Not one bad interaction from entering the lobby to departure. Surgeon Dr Karla Bernardi is first class. Super clear communicator, not in a rush, genuinely shows care for the patient. Keep up the great work!!

I told my daughter to go there tonight for a second opinion because she's worried she has an ectopic pregnancy. They treated her so terribly that it hurts my heart that I encouraged her to go there. She overheard the doctor making fun of her in the hallway. They didn't test her for a single thing. They belittled her and humiliated her. I'm totally blown away. A decade ago they saved my life when I was misdiagnosed at a different hospital and I have always held them to the highest regards. Literally heart broken. Do not go here ladies. We have enough of the world to fight- we don't need to go to a WOMEN'S hospital to be humiliated. We all deserve dignity. I'm so sorry for anyone that I have ever encouraged to go here. My daughter is still so scared and on her hour drive home to me without a single answer or test. You should be ashamed of yourself.

Not from this town but this has to be the worst hospital I've been 2. Took forever for everything, Discharged me with no explanation on why I'm in tears over severe chest pain and barely can even breathe in without it hurting so bad. My discharge paperwork says cough. I went in for chest pain not a cough.

Very competent physicians and nurses. Recently had have specialty surgery at UPMC Montefiore and found the staff to be as competent as those at UPMC Magee but not nearly as warm and friendly. Wouldn't know they're the part of the same system. If I had the choice, would definitely choose Magee.

Had a nurse named Jessica Greene. Couldn’t believe how incompetent, insensitive and generally careless she was. We over heard her talking about our personal information down the hallway near the elevator. Guess she didn’t realize one of our family members was right behind her. So she thought she’d talk to another staff member about how overweight my mother is and the condition of our family who is the patient. I guess I’ll be the one to uphold HIPAA laws here. I have never been more disgusted or felt more disrespected in my life!

I had my daughter at this hospital 18 years ago. I had pre-eclampsia and had to be induced 2 months early at 32 weeks pregnant because the pre-eclampsia was so bad and was to the point that both of our lives were at risk. I was sent to Magee Womens Hospital in Pittsburgh and they had treated me so well and took very good care of me and my daughter. I was a first time mom at the time and was scared to death and they did everything to help me before, during, and after the birth of my daughter. It's a wonderful hospital and if I lived closer, I would of made the choice to have all of my children there.

Currently 34 weeks pregnant with my second child. I had my first in 2020 and went to Magee and despite covid happening in the third trimester everything went as well as it could have. Fast forward to 2022. I have only been seen in person by my OB once for my initial appointment, and I have currently been waiting for a phone call from a scheduler for the remainder of my routine OB appointments since Monday. I am a nurse and a upmc employee and am having a very hard time getting ahold of anyone, and having any type of access to a physician for routine appointments. Although I like my doctors, I would never recommend upmc magee for prenatal care as the lack of communication and appointment availability has given me more anxiety than any other aspect of pregnancy. I am extremely disappointed because we chose upmc insurance so I could have access to this care, and now I am having trouble getting care at all.

Just had my second child here but it was my first experience in this hospital. Definitely was nervous because I heard a lot of mixed reviews about the Hospital but literally every single person you meet as soon as you walk in the door is the nicest soul ever. Every single nurse I had , every doctor I met , even room service is amazing.

I had to be admitted at 32 weeks and had my baby girl prematurely and I have nothing but amazing things to say about this hospital. The nurses were so compassionate and encouraging when it came to my health and the baby’s care. I honestly can’t thank them enough. I wish I could give ten stars!

I have a lot of issues with this hospital- they completely mishandled my twin pregnancy and preeclampsia diagnosis. Never any mention or discussion that I would be put on a medication after giving birth to manage preeclampsia that would make me bedridden and unable to hold my twins for two days. I made it extremely clear my twins would only be breastfed and before I was even able to be with them a doctor came in, told me her pronouns, and then told me I didn’t have any option but to give my twins formula. I was not allowed to hold or try and breastfeed my twins due to hospitals absurd policy so how could breastfeeding possibly work? Not to mention my preeclampsia was not diagnosed until way late in pregnancy after months of symptoms. I had gained weight from swelling and dr carol chessin told me to lay off the sweets and that was the reason why I had gained weight. It wasn’t the severe and uncontrollable swelling caused by growing two placentas it was the 3 twizzlers I had in my first trimester apparently. I have many more issues but these are just some of my favorites!! Ladies you’re better off giving birth alone in a field than at this horrible facility.

My loved one was hospitalized and while I stayed to provide support, the recliner I slept on must have not been replaced in decades. It smelled like mold/mildew and old antique furniture. I scheduled an appointment with my allergist. Very disappointing , I expect quality control would routinely review items and products would be updated.

My pregnancy was beautiful other than my experiences at Magee. Let me start with the labor and delivery nurses were great and Dr. Shaheen was a beautiful light. But…. The MFM doctors are still living in the past and treating people like they’re broken. Someone even told me I was bound to get XYZ because I was African American. The techs that take your BP and ask questions are rude. The OBGYN doctors are nice enough but don’t really listen to anything you say. I was able to predict everything that was happening to me or going to happen to me before they were and they didn’t listen. The 6 week appointment is a joke. I was so broken internally and ended up needing PT a year later after I was told I was fine. Lastly, and most despicably, the lactation specialists are HORRIBLE. I requested one during my stay and she walked in and it’s almost as if her face dropped when she saw I was black, then said “what do you need?”. I told her I was having trouble with latching and milk production and she said “you’ll be fine” and left. Awful. I cried. I tried to go again 2 weeks in when i still was having issues, and no one showed up to my appointment and instead went to lunch! I have met 5 other women and 2 UPMC PHYSICIANS that had horrible experiences too during birth at Magee. It’s so sad because Magee is suppose to be the best. I can’t wait until I can’t change my insurance.

Dr. Douglas Reed is a great bariatric surgeon who takes the time to explain all options and the benefits/risks. He truly cares about his patients, and I had an easy surgery and recovery. The one area that needs to be improved is with Cheryl the admin assistant. She is unhelpful and will not answer or offer to find answers to your questions. She just repeats that you should look at the packet you are given when you come in for your first appointment. That packet is not helpful. If you ask her to verify if you have everything in, she just says she doesn't know because she doesn't have your chart up, even though you've given her the information several times to pull it up. Patients call with questions because its a complex process of getting numerous tests and doctor visits to get the surgery and the timing of these is critical. She will tell you one thing at the beginning of the call and she will change what she is saying several times throughout the call. And when you ask, yet again, to clarify which version of what she said is correct, she says, yet again, that she doesn't know because she doesn't have your chart pulled up. It is more hassle and stress than is needed or worth it to have to talk to Cheryl. She does not seem to understand that patients need guidance to the complex process and her not being clear, willing to help, and giving conflicting information makes the process even more difficult. She gets very impatient and talks over you throughout the conversation. Several times in every conversation. I asked several times who I can ask these questions and she says I can only go through her. Its truly so frustrating and demoralizing to be treated like this by Cheryl. I do not regret having Dr. Reed do my surgery. He is a great surgeon. But Cheryl needs to treat people better and be willing to help them in a respectful way without always talking over them. Please look into this with Cheryl.

Horrible experience during the birth of my baby. Would not recommend the hospital or the doctor Sandra Blaser who was distracted, rude, and did not listen to me saying “no” to unnecessary care. If you want to feel respected go somewhere else and definitely to a different doctor.

The staff was excellent when I had my babies. I can't say enough about how wonderful my csection staff was and all of the nurses who cared for my babies. However, I had di/di twin girls. When meeting the doctor, I asked if they were fraternal or identical. He kept telling me they were fraternal because they were di/di twins. I asked if there was anyway to find out for sure and he kept blowing me off and wouldn't test them. It's 2022 and you wanna try telling me there isn't a way to know or a simple test? Not stupid. Anyway, he finally said that when they would do bloodwork they would check their blood types. He went over the results the next day or two and I had to asl what their blood type was when he damn well knew that's what I wanted to know. He checked and they were the same but continued to insist they were fraternal and didn't want to be bothered with it. 10 months layer I have my girls tested. They're identical. I had the right to have my question answered when I asked at the hospital. The answer itself didn't matter either way, but I should be able to know what my babies are. Testing should be mandatory unless the mother doesn't want it.

I recently had emergency surgery here which resulted in a 3 day inpatient stay. I was in pain due to my appendix rupturing! My nurse on 41 block made me lay in bed for 90 minutes until she decided to medicate me. I asked 4 separate times to be medicated. Oh yes, there was enough time between doses. I also had a post discharge medication delivered to me by the pharmacy. Those pills went missing from my overnight bag! I will never return to Magee. For any reason!

It can be hard to find parking, so make sure you leave with LOTS of time before your appointment. That being said, I have received excellent care here. My OBGYN is very knowledgeable, non-judgmental, and has given me access to vaccines and healthcare that I didn't even know existed.

Tim from labor and delivery is amazing. He made sure I was comfortable and rubbed my back the best way I’ve ever had my back rubbed. He’s the only reason why I recommend having a baby at this hospital. Other than that I say birth at home. I know a lot about having babies and they let me do my own thing during labor so I’m not going to complain much. But it’s not natural to lay down or be connected to monitors while having a baby. They also don’t participate in water or lotus birth.

Very pleasant experience. Came to the ER for lower right pelvic/abdominal pain. I was in and out very quickly. Tests and labs were done and I had an answer within 2 hours. The nurses were all super nice and accommodating.

Am still here in our post delivery room writing this review, and to start this hospital and it’s staff are amazing! My daughter was just born April 9th Easter Sunday with a small hole in her heart, and the care and love that goes into the patients and family from every member of the staff will never be forgotten. Our baby girl came into the world at 2pm today and is cute as can be 🙏😄 Shoutout to the Emily Duo that took care of us in LD3! And to all the other nurses, doctors, and staff that made this an even more unforgettable experience. Much love and thank you again for the hospitality you show all of your patients, We love you guys!

I have had 2 experiences at this hospital and both times were very pleasant-as hospitals go. There is a person from the building maintenance department who was on her way to lunch and stopped to help my father. She went searching for a wheelchair while her lunch got cold. What an angel! I think her name was Carol. We need more people in the world like her.

My mother was a patient on the Transitional Care Unit and it was by far the most frustrating and gut wrenching experience. There were only two nurses that were willing to discuss my mother's care and others just starred at me like I had two heads. My mom was a cancer patient which came with other health challenges and the staff there, in my opinion, didn't know what they were doing. She was there to get stronger and instead she steadily declined so I made the decision to move her back to Shadyside Hospital. The reason why we decided to go with Magee was because it was supposed to be a good hospital, and the hope was that she could get the necessary care to get her stronger, and to also have resources available to monitor the awful symptoms that came with her type of cancer. It took over a week to even get a proper diet established that she could tolerate, but at that point it was too late. I wouldn't utilize this section of the facility if you have other debilitating health conditions.

My delivery was amazing, but our NICU stay has been horrible. Doctors that don’t care and want to constantly remind you of the “code of conduct” when you get upset during a phone call. The lack of compassion is ridiculous in the physicians that are supposed to be “caring” for my child. And filing complaints and voicing concerns gets you no where.

I am currently 37 weeks pregnant and the care I have received from several departments at this hospital so far has been some of the best care I have ever received. I highly recommend using the Midwives at Magees to any expecting mother.

Have a love hate relationship with this place. There are some really wonderful people that work here. My wife has had some excellent care providers that have gone above and beyond for her patient experience. A majority of the front line staff have always been pleasant and great to work with and heavily outweigh any negative staff experiences we have had. With that being said it’s hard to know where to point the negative experiences but have to believe it falls on administration. We have been sent on wild goose chases been given incorrect information by staff and have had a slew of poor communication and direction on a regular basis . It is almost impossible to get someone to take responsibility for issues that arise or even just get clear direction. Thank God they have some wonderful people that work here to at least help or try to navigate the nightmare that is UPMC. It is a shame that this is the only woman’s hospital and birth center in Pittsburgh. Could be better and scary to think it could be worse….

I have used Magee since 08 which is when I birthed my preemie daughter. NICU was amazing and so was my after care. Fast forward to now, I’ve recently had to have three surgery. Their team of highly skilled doctors found the issues when others dismissed and sent me home! The staff are also the most friendly people I’ve encountered in a hospital setting. I had not one but multiple doctors stop by and ask me about my condition and if I understood the approach they were taking. The hospital is an hour drive and I’ll choose to take the ride in order to receive proper care at this hospital !!!!! Thanks to everyone at Magee for making my surgery experiences the best they could be.

I have nothing but great reviews for the staff, nurses and doctors at Magee. Everyone was so compassionate. My daughter had a rare infection and lost the baby. Dr Tiffany was amazing, so kind, knowledgeable and compassionate. The nurses were wonderful. I didn't know there were so many non profit services for bereavement! Thank you to all who were there helping Heather and Cody. I hope the staff sees this post.

I called twice to get information on bariatric surgery and spoke with a Cheryl who works for Dr. Reed. Cheryl provided a lot of contradicting information which prompted me ask clarifying questions. She was not only impatient, but also disrespectful and was even mocking and making fun of patients. UPMC, you are better than this. This kind of person should not be in contact with patients. She dismissed all of my concerns as invalid and provided me with inaccurate information. Cheryl does not have good communication skills and seems like they do not care about or like their job. They certainly do not care about patients.

My daughter had a surgery here last month and I have nothing but good things to say. Everyone was incredibly gentle with my anxious adult child, explained things thoroughly and even took time to talk with us and form connections before we entrusted them to operate on her. Nurse Gabby was a sweetheart.

Without question, this hospital has provided the highest quality medical care that we have received in our 7+ years of living in Pittsburgh. Regardless of all the myriad challenges that come with the standard hospital environment these days, all the staff members have routinely treated both my wife and I with such tremendous human compassion and medical competency. It's thanks to this hospital that my wife was referred to doctors that have gotten her on the right path to wellness that was just not possible at other hospitals (particularly non-UPMC hospitals...looking at you, Allegheny Health Network!).

Went to Magee for stomach ulcers that I have had for a month. My appointment was scheduled for 11:20 am. I arrived at Magee by 11. The directory boards show 3 zones, blue, purple, and green. They do not give suit numbers for most of the physicians on the boards. The hospital layout is odd…it’s more of a triangle shape than a square. I tried calling the GI office to see which floor I needed to be on since the information line was long. The office for Dr.Barrie never answered. I checked in on the MyUPMC app and ended up being a few minutes late for my appointment. I was not seen due to not being able to find the office. The suite number was not listed on the app either. This is outrageous. I will be going to Cleveland Clinic from now on. I hope all of you do too. UPMC is a mess of a healthcare organization. I do NOT recommend.
