Bicycling the paths are good. The terrain goes from cement to hard packed gravel. The canal Exploration stop has bathrooms and great maps for direction. You may see a few muskrats in the canal swimming and birds overhead. Most cyclists are mindful and can get busy in certain areas. I reccomend this stop.

This visitor center is in a nice park along the canal. You can walk on a smooth walking trail along the tow path next to the canal. There is a nice visitor center, with a little gift shop and historical information. It is a nice place to visit.

Great experience when the Center was open and doing demonstrations. Nice hub to start to bike, hike or pick up the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic railroad. Restroom on site.

The history of the canal and the amazingly positive impact on the economic development of the Ohio Valley is fully explained through a variety of hands on exhibits. Very easy to understand, yet fully informative.

This national park facility was the interpretive resource we were looking for on a visit to Ohio. The technology, the financing, the cultural impact, the opportunity for poor people and small farmers... all covered here. Outdoors is an actual lock, but many interactive exhibits inside, in a perfectly clean and well maintained national park facility. One electronic interactive made a sort of game out of the process of lockage... a real hit!

Cuyahoga Valley Ohio and Erie Canal Exploration Center houses incredible displays and exhibits on the Canal. They explain about an era gone by where transportation of goods were made on the international waterways. Boats were pulled along a four foot deep Canal that was hand dug and took about seven years to complete all section for 308 miles. America was once powered by animals, not by machines. The visitor center is in a previous tavern and store for travelers on the Canal and just outside is lock 38 and spillway.

Not bad for free entrance but wish it has better exhibits -- amazed to see how narrow the canal was but did have big impact to the community by then.

Great place to learn about the history of the Cuyahoga Valley and trail. The kids learned a lot and really enjoyed it. Especially learning about how the locks worked to move the river boats along on the canal.

Great experience with lots of things to learn about. They encouraged you to look closer and feel lots of objects. Great interactive displays - some electronic - to learn about the canal era. Very friendly park ranger ready to answer questions. Half hour (45 min?) well spent!!

Positives: interesting history on the E and O Canal and its impact on the development of Ohio (and the U.S. for that matter). You can access the towpath just outside the museum. Negatives: Building that houses the exhibits is cool but could be problematic for some. Beware of the uneven flooring when transitioning rooms. It is a bit of a drive from the center of th r park and majority of attractions.

A little bit hard to give an experience here since the center was closed for the season and doesn't open until may. The trails leading to and from the center are nice with an interesting bridge to go over. The actual canal is kind of small but worth a short stop to see.

Took a weekend trip to the Cuyahoga Valley and drove the whole way down starting off of Rockside Rd and ending on Merryman Rd. The weather was beautiful and there were definitely a lot of interesting and cool things to stop and see along the way, with this being one of them. I would definitely recommend stopping by this National Park to explore and check everything out that it has to offer! Lots of history and cool things to discover here!

Interesting information about the history of the area and the canal system. It is located near a functional lock so you can see how they really work.

Very disappointed in the canal and lock, Did not visit the exploration center building. The reason the canal and lock were disappointing was because I have been here a few years ago and there was water in the canal and the lock. Not sure why, but now the canal is mostly dewatered, being left to grow in which is hard to figure out why. Many canal communities probably wish they had a canal and lock in operable condition but I fear that environmental preservationists have prevailed over historical preservationists and this will be left to be reclaimed by nature. 10 years from now, people will say "remember when they did lock demonstrations?" Though maintaining it is much easier than trying to get it back in shape after neglecting it, i fear that the shortsighted approach has been taken here and eventually this lock will be as derelict as the rest of the locks in the valley and as always, we will hear "It will cost too much to restore it and there is no money available" I hope I am wrong because I love the canals in Ohio and we shouldn't let the remaining portions and locks in the state slip even the slightest bit or we won't have anything but overgrown, silted-in ditches with trees growing in the middle.

Wonderful way to learn the history of canals. Interactive displays are great for kids. A restored lock helps to understand the difficulty of canal travel. Highly recommend!

👍👍 Also know as the Sagamore creek loop. This is one of the best loop hikes around and the perfect distance. You start by walking along a beautiful creekside, Warning you will cross the creek a couple of times so prepared to get wet. On the way back you follow the Buckeye trail and have sweeping views...
