It is a place where you will know about kolkata. It is situated at Baro bari, Barisha. This is one of the landlords (Jamidar) house of Kolkata. Sabarna Roy Chowdhury family is the landlord of Kolkata. At present Sabarna Roy Chowdhury family is divided into eight houses. These are called..... 1) Atchala bari 2) Baro bari 3) Mejo bari 4) Majher bari 5) Benaki bari 6) Kalikinkar bhavan 7) Birati bari 8) Nimta bari First six houses are situated at Barisha area. And others are in Birati and Belghoria Nimta. Durga puja in Atchala bari is the first Durga puja of Kolkata. Jamidar Lakshmikanta Roy Chowdhury started Durga puja in this atchala temple on 1609 AC. This family gave lease Kolkata to the East India Company on 1690 AC against Rs.1300/- per annum. This deal was done in this atchala temple.

Sabarna Sangrahashala in Kolkata is a museum about the Sabarna Roy Choudhury family and Kolkata. It has been developed by The Sabarna Roy Choudhury Paribar Parishad. It was established in 2005 to cater the need of students and research scholars and also to create an awareness about the preservation of historical source materials. The Museum exhibits rare articles and historical documents of history. It is located at Barisha in Kolkata. The Institution caters to the needs of researchers doing studies on Kolkata and the Sabarna Roy Choudhury family. This family museum possesses rare documents and articles, including Kabilatipatras dating from the 18th and 19th centuries: an important holding being one which has the signature of Kavi Ramprasad Sen dated 1794. Other articles include a huge earthen rice pot dating 1840 with a capacity for 240 kg of grain, a metal hookah dated c. 1878, a metal candle stand dated c. 1795, and grinding wheels dated 1845. The philatelic and numismatic divisions possess rare stamps, First Day Covers and coins.

Incredible place to learn about the actual history of Kolkata. The Sabarna Roy Choudhury family is linked with every layer of Kolkata from the time of the Mughals, much before the British set foot in India. Be it the first Durga Puja or the first RathYatra of Kolkata. The first road of Kolkata and the present Kalighat temple was built by this family. Mr. Devarshi Roy Choudhury is the curator and is a very knowledgeable and helpful person. It has to be kept in mind, it is a family owned display of their inherited historical treasure for the benefit of the public. So facilities may not be world class but the knowledge gained supplements that. Everyone interested in Kolkata's history should come here once.

Loved it. Visited with my wife today.. Mr Roy choudhury personally gave us a tour of his collections.. Its worth a visit if you love history. You will feel like you are on a time machine. You will know a lot of facts about kolkata and will be shocked to know the real history rather than the history which is feed to us by the paid historians
