Since my childhood I have been visiting this place. Now the population is too much and too many hawkers have encroached the footpath for which we need to avail the road which is a risky place for the passersby. Yet a good place for shopping from costly items to very cheap price materials. We need to be very careful about pickpockets especially in and around this area.

One of the busiest and famous places in Kolkata. It's the heart of the city. As it is always crowded so there is no particular time to visit. Be it street shopping, street foods, new market area or for any brands Esplanade is always in the first priority. It is well connected by all means of transportation. One needs to visit this place to feel the vibe of Kolkata.

The heart of kolkata's shopping crowd. Lots of local shops with branded shops and many malls are there. You can get apparels in varities of design according your choice. Not only dress you will get many makeup things, bags, toyes and many thing in this place. The best way to reach there is Metro. The Esplanade station is the perfect stop. Getting a parking place is very difficult here.

The Esplanade is the heart of Kolkata. Whenever a person comes to Kolkata he has to pass this place. Much of Grand Kolkata depends on this place. This esplanade connects Kolkata with the rest of the world. The Esplanade was the name given to the northern portion of jungle, which later formed the Maidan. In olden days, it stretched from Dharmatala (now Lenin Sarani) to Chandpal Ghat on the Hooghly river. In the days of Warren Hastings, it formed a favourite promenade for 'elegant walking parties'. The first pictures of the area is at the end of eighteenth century by Daniell and William Baillie. The old Government House and the Council House were conspicuous objects in each drawing. He also presented an addition view in the shape of two elephants with a crowd of attendants. The strengthening of British power, subsequent to their victory in the Battle of Plassey was followed by the construction of the new Fort William, in 1758. The European inhabitants of Kalikata gradually forsook the narrow limits of the old palisades and moved to around the Maidan. The first recorded football match in Kolkata was played on the Esplanade in the second week of April 1858 between the Calcutta Club of Civilians and the 'Gentlemen of Barrakpur'. There had been matches earlier but those were not documented

Dharmatala (archaic spelling Dhurrumtollah) is a neighbourhood of Central Kolkata, in Kolkata district in the Indian state of West Bengal. Dharmatala Street has been renamed after Lenin as Lenin Sarani but the neighbourhood up to Wellington Square continues to be referred as Dharmatala. It is a busy commercial area that had come up with the growth of Calcutta during the British Raj and is thus one of the repositories of history in the city.

Very nice place to visit. Also a great place for shopping. But the roadside shops charge high prices for things. A huge collection of clothes, accessories, jewelry is available. A variety of foods are available. There are many eateries along the road, many good restaurants. There are shopping malls, although the price of goods there is quite high.

It was just Christmas so it looked pretty. The new market is the place of thrift shopping. it's the sarojini nagar of Kolkata. There is amazing stuff at very low price but you have to take your time look around and bargain.

Nice place for shopping, hang out, or just for a casual time-spent. A busy area from where intercity bus service is available. A place for political meetings. It is a historic region of india from the British period. Now one more diamond will be added by conjugating east-west metro (under-water metro network at kolkata).

Central Dharmatala is known for its monumental colonial landmarks, such as the baroque-style Metropolitan Building from 1905. Opened in 1874, the redbrick New Market shopping arcade is packed with stalls for clothing, jewelry, flowers, and local cheeses, as well as street food stands and venerable confectioners. Exhibits at the massive Indian Museum, founded in 1814, range from traditional masks to printed fabrics.

Great place to visit. Always a nostalgic feeling for me to just roam around in the crowded streets, often bargaining with the street vendors and trying out different street foods. Esplanade is the go to place for shopping and fun. A must visit place in Kolkata.

A place where you may visit you you have good bargaining skills or at least visit with someone who has this skill And be aware few shop keepers might threaten you to buy something after they handed some product in your hand And remember in this place shop keepers are push overs And the good side there is a huge collection of clothes and shoes also few more shops like perfume, normal jewelry like pendent, bracelet, rings And at the opposite of the road you'll see huge collection of backpacks and sports goods

This place is accessible by metro and other modes of transport in Kolkata. Anything you want is available here, and if you can bargain like anything, then you are sure to get a good deal. Be careful if you have kids with you, be sure to keep them close to you as it is easy to get lost in the crowd here.

It was fully crowded area, I went there today for Durga Puja shopping. I bought a Kurti at 200, a trouser at 150, a sling bag at 100 & some stuffs... So basically some things are okay at price but you have to burgain.. & some rates are fixed & final. The behaviour of the shop owners are very rude & they almost stated everything badly. Ambience is not good, crowded which can makes you feeling bad. & they almost snach your hand to buy from their shop. This is very bad. They are selling Kurti & Palazzo set at fixed rate 650/700, which was quite high comparably to online shopping. So go at your own risk. I found some good things so I bought, but not everything was good there. I didn't find skirts, t shirts, half sleeve dresses etc. So I felt bad, because I mainly went for these items.
