This is an ancestral house and the birth place of great personality of India is Swami Vivekananda. In the year 2004 this house was fully inaugurate by Ramkrishna mission Belur Math. All the rooms are decorated as museum by the history and with the usable things of the swamiji's family. They arranged a 30 mins 3D show with Swamiji's great speech of Chicago. Must recommend this peaceful devotional place for young generation. Ramkrishna Mission arrange spoken English class, computer class, yoga class, library etc. specially for students.

The ancestral house of Swami Vivekananda. This place has been restored in the year of 1999 to the current shape. This is beautifully decorated with various digital artworks to showcase the life of Vivekananda. The entry fee is Rs 10, and there's a 3D show which costs Rs 20.

We reached like 5 mins before they close for lunch time. I suggest you keep a good 40mins to 1 hour in hand if you are planning to visit. Do not miss the 15mins movie show. That’s quite inspiring. Photography is not allowed inside which may be one reason the place is so quiet and peaceful. They charge a nominal Rs30 fee which is worth it. Take a trip down the history here and you won’t regret it.

We celebrate 12 January as National Youth Day in India. It is the day to mark the contribution of youth to the society. The day is also about encouraging the youth to persevere and achieve greater goals in life. A wonderful place to visit. Clean and well - appointed, it is a moving experience. However there are 2 glaring problems. Firstly, the place doesn't have a proper reception where one can sit. The only place to sit is outside near the shoe rack. Secondly, accessing the toilet is difficult as it lies in the no - shoe zone. However, the toilets are wet and not well designed. This makes it difficult to use them with bare feet. The authorities should rectify these problems promptly.

RKM Swami Vivekananda's ancestral house cum museum is the ideal place to learn what is life and for what it is meant. It is the place where the new generations must have a visit. One will get detail information about Swami Vivekananda's birth, his work and his speech at Chicago, as, light-sound show and 3D movie is shown on behalf of the museum and no extra charge is required for this show. Though the house was not like what is right now, the house was completely destructed in coarse of time. It is due to the immense hard works of Ramakrishna Mission that made it possible to restore the house to it's present condition. Everyone should visit it as it a cultural heritage site in kolkata. I visited the place yesterday and I assure that RKM Swami Vivekananda ancestral house will conquer everyone's heart.

The birthplace and ancestral house of Swami Vivekananda. In this house Swami Vivekananda spent his childhood days when he was known as Narendranath Dutta. The most famous Shrine Hall of "Bireswar Shiva" is present inside the area only, where Swamiji's mother Bhubaneswari Devi used to worship and pray to Lord Shiva and as a blessing of Lord Shiva got Child Naren as his son. A most famous, historical and heritage house in the heart of Kolkata. The view of the house and the area is a majestic one. An auditorium is here where various spiritual lectures are being conducted. Classes on various spiritual literatures, cultures and different languages courses are also conducted here. It is a cultural centre with various activities. Wonderful Shrine Hall where daily morning and evening prayers are worshipped. A 3D show on the life of Swami Vivekananda is also shown here in the evenings. A perfect place for the character development and mind development for the youths. Thank You.

This is the house where Swami Vivekanand was born. The condition of this house was very bad before. In 2004, this building was restored by the government and developed into a museum including research centre, English learning centre, computer training centre, memorial shrine, yoga class, library, and a charitable dispensary. I'll recommend to every visitor going there to keep some extra time and watch the 3D show on Swamiji. The duration of the show is around 30 minutes, but it will give us a good feel for sure. 🚫 Photography is prohibited inside. Ticket price : 10/- (30/- if you want to watch 3D show) Museum time: 9 am to 12 pm / 2 pm to 5 pm (Monday closed).

History After the death of his father (Vishwanath Datta) in 1884, Narendranath's aunt, who was living with them in that house, claimed full possession of the property. She filed a lawsuit against Narendranath's mother (Bhuvaneswari Devi) and her family. Vivekananda won the case in the lower court, but the case was appealed to a higher court. The case continued for many years in higher courts. It concluded only a few days before Vivekananda's death in 1902. According to the final ruling in the case, Vivekananda was awarded full legal possession of his ancestral house. Renovation Over time, the ancestral house of Vivekananda became dilapidated. In 1962, Ramakrishna Mission authorities decided to acquire the property and turn it into a museum. In May 1999, the Ramakrishna Mission acquired the land and the adjacent plot through the Government of West Bengal. A committee was set up for this project. The committee managed to amass a fund of ₹200 million (US$2.8 million) from Central Government, State Government, and public donations of which ₹99 million (US$1.4 million) were granted by the Central Government. In 2004, after renovation, the house was turned into a museum and cultural centre. Currently, Vivekananda's ancestral home is spread over 22,000 square feet and houses a museum, a research centre, a memorial shrine, a library, an English centre, a computer training centre, and a charitable dispensary. Seminars and conventions are also regularly organised here. There is a Shiva Lingam located at the premises.

Very good place in Kolkata. Swami Vivekananda 12 January 1863 – 4 July 1902), born Narendranath Datta, was an Indian Hindu monk and philosopher. He was a chief disciple of the 19th-century Indian mystic Ramakrishna.Influenced by Western esotericism, he was a key figure in the introduction of the Indian darsanas (teachings, practices) of Vedanta and Yoga to the Western world, and is credited with raising interfaith awareness, bringing Hinduism to the status of a major world religion during the late 19th century. He was a major force in the contemporary Hindu reform movements in India, and contributed to the concept of nationalism in colonial India. Vivekananda founded the Ramakrishna Math and the Ramakrishna Mission. He is perhaps best known for his speech which began with the words "Sisters and brothers of America ...,"in which he introduced Hinduism at the Parliament of the World's Religions in Chicago in 1893. Vivekananda was born Narendranath Datta (shortened to Narendra or Naren) in a Bengali family at his ancestral home at 3 Gourmohan Mukherjee Street in Calcutta, the capital of British India, on 12 January 1863 during the Makar Sankranti festival. He belonged to a traditional family and was one of nine siblings. His father, Vishwanath Datta, was an attorney at the Calcutta High Court.Durgacharan Datta, Narendra's grandfather was a Sanskrit and Persian scholar who left his family and became a monk at age twenty-five. His mother, Bhubaneswari Devi, was a devout housewife. The progressive, rational attitude of Narendra's father and the religious temperament of his mother helped shape his thinking and personality.Narendranath was interested in spirituality from a young age and used to meditate before the images of deities such as Shiva, Rama, Sita, and Mahavir Hanuman. He was fascinated by wandering ascetics and monks.Narendra was naughty and restless as a child, and his parents often had difficulty controlling him. His mother said, "I prayed to Shiva for a son and he has sent me one of his demons".

Some of the important events of Swami’s life are recreated to bring to alive his courageous, courteous and awakened life. Please know that visitors wearing shorts or short pants aren’t allowed entry. All rooms and exhibits have description plaques alongside for the knowledge and convenience of visitors. The 3D show and the bookshop are added attractions. Tickets @₹30 for adults is very nominal considering the costs of the upkeep. Full support for the trustees and the very best wishes for them. Hope this historical landmark continues to be duly maintained. A must-visit for everyone.

This is the birth place and ancestral house of Swami Vivekananda who was known as Narendranath Dutta before his initiation from Thakur Ramkrishna Paramhansadev. This place is a must visit for any Indian, because as we all know that each and every Indian, irrespective of caste creed and religion has deep love ❤ and respect 🙏 in their hearts for this affectionate and beloved son of mother India 🇮🇳. His holiness took birth on 12th January in 1863 in an upper middle class family of 'Kayastha ' caste. This liberal Hindu monk earned much prestige and pride for his motherland. Thinking about the great job he had done in his short span of life that we still get astonished. His movement to promote Vedanta philosophy in the western world is well known to everyone. Social reform was in his heart, he spread a strong message to the youths of India to build a powerful and enlightened nation. Worldwide, highly regarded Ramkrishna Mission founded by Vivekananda have been working consistently as per his direction and wishes. Sadly, India lost her one of most prominent and popular son in 1902 too early 😢 😞

The house is must visit place of all devotees who are attached to RKM and obviously for all other general people. It's situated on Bidhan Sarani. If you are going towards north from Esplanade via Central Avenue or C R Avenue, then from Vivekananda road crossing take right turn and again after going through Vivekanand road 500 mtrs max and then from Bidhan Sarani crossing left turn and go slightly forward, you will find Vivekanand ancestral house at left. It's actually a museum and it was almost demolished condition. It was taken over by RKM at 1998 and renovated completely with the 19th century materials in collaboration with ASI. If you go via personal car, you may park your car at two sides of Bidhan Sarani in front of the house.

"Swami Vivekananda was born here": this inscription is enough to raise goosebumps to the believers who have studied and followed the life of this "cyclonic monk from India". It had become dilapited and avoided by us all who were born and brought up in the immediate vicinity. Thanks to the authorities for renovating and presenting us with a beautiful museum and landmark.

Ramakrishna Mission Swami Vivekananda's Ancestral House and Cultural Centre is a museum and cultural centre. It is located at 105 Vivekananda Road, Kolkata, India. In this house, Swami Vivekananda (then called Narendranath Datta) was born on 12 January 1863. The house remained Vivekananda's home throughout his childhood and early youth. The cultural centre was inaugurated by the President of India A. P. J. Abdul Kalam. HISTORY After the death of his father (Vishwanath Datta) in 1884, Narendranath's aunt, who was living with them in that house, claimed full possession of the property. She filed a lawsuit against Narendranath's mother (Bhuvaneswari Devi) and her family.[3] Vivekananda won the case in the lower court, but the case was appealed to a higher court.[6] The case continued for many years in higher courts. It concluded only a few days before Vivekananda's death in 1902. According to the final ruling in the case, Vivekananda was awarded full legal possession of his ancestral house.

Its a devine place. I am no one to praise Swamiji.. He took Hinduism to the world stage. His devotion & dedication to his work is unparalleled. This place is very calm & quite & very clean as well. They have a light & sound show on the 1st floor & a 3D movie on Swamiji. Though the meditation centre was closed due to covid restriction. This house was restored completely after several damages to the old structure.
