Incredible, quiet hike with no tourists. To get there, we recommend taking a taxi from Chora Sfakion (30€). There are several sections where you have to climb a bit, and one section with ladders. Overall, it was fairly easy but probably not the best hike for small children or anyone who is injured (as you need both legs and both arms in several sections) Once you have arrived at Marmaris beach, enjoy a nice ouzo and rent long chairs before taking a boat back to Loutro, then Sfakia (5€ to Loutro, +4-5€ back to to Sfakia). You’re going to be gorge in this gorge!

Nice to stop by the bridge and make a photo of a small snow white church on the gorge, go in the morning about 10 am x best light. You can visit the church 10 min from the bridge but nothing interesting. No reason to go inside the gorge, long way to the Marmara beach, rocky and dusty, pretty boring. Just snap a photo and go by car to Marmara beach, trek to the beach 20 min by foot. ENJOY 😄😄

Really stunning scenery - pictures don't do it justice. The hike isn't too challenging, you just need to be sure footed as it is lots of rocks and scree. Wear hiking shoes if possible - our trainers are nearly ruined because of it.

Brilliant walk but not for the faint hearted! There is a rope at one point to help you climb down a rock face which I found the most difficult part the ladders in comparison were a piece of cake as they are very very sturdy. We started at 7am took a taxi from Chora Skafion which cost €50 to the Aradena village. The walk took us 3-4 hrs we took our time as we were wearing runners and some of the rocks can be quite slippery. The swim at the end at Marmara beach was deliciously cool the water there is like silk. Would definitely do the walk again.

We took the walk from the Aradena bridge to Loutro. Beautiful cliffs and nature along with some goats. The only thing you have to watch out for is the red arrow towards taverna Livaniana. We made the big mistake following this arrow thinking it was the right way, but instead it leads you out of the cliffs into the hot sun with little to no shaddow. everything except for this wrong turn was amazing. i would recommend wearing propper shoes for walking on the rocks. We didn't make it to Marmara beach because of the wrong turn but making to Loutro in was worth it. The view when you arrive trough the mountains is absolutely breathtaking!

Gorge : One of the most beautiful Gorges on Crete! Definitely worth visiting if you are staying in Chania and you are looking for an adventure. You start from the village of Aradena also where the bridge is located, at the middle of the gorge. You decent down to the gorge and you start the hike towards the beach. The gorge has a total length of 15 km, but the hike from the bridge to Marmara beach is half that distance, about 7 km. The bridge is a sight to behold but another highlight of the hike is the steep descent, climbing down ladder almost 15 meters. When you arrive at the beach after a swim you can either go back the way you came or hike the Coastline towards Sfakia . You can also take a boat from Marmara to Sfakia. Road to the Gorge : Asphalt How to get there : I would recommend that you drive to the village of Aredena (starting point of the hike). Park your car there and hike to the Marmara beach. Then I would recommend instead of hiking back to get a boat to Sfakia and then hire a taxi to get you to your car.

Amazing gorge away from the crowds. Plan to spend some time at the beach at the end, two sunbeds and an umbrella are £7.50 for the day. Don't get caught there in the heat and have a plan to get back out. Walking back up might be tricky but doable or you could take a water taxi to a different town but need to plan from there. Walking out of Loutro in the heat is NOT advisable.

Beautiful and moderately challenging gorge. We took a taxi from Chora Sfakion to the upper entry point, and then hiked down to Marmara beach. This took us 2.5 hours (no breaks). During high season you can take a boat back from that point, but in low season we had to hike another hour to Lourto (also a beautiful path). Check the timetable for the ferries as there are just 4 a day.

We walked the gorge all the way to the beach. Would recommend not doing this in squashy running shoes or sandals. You’re walking on a river bed with large loose rocks and there are some sections where the path requires scrambling. When the path directs you up some stairs prepare yourself for the sketchiest part of the hike. Don’t take your grandad. Five out of five.

We did the circuit starting in Anopolis. Not including stops, it took us around 1.5h to descend to Loutro (where we had lunch), 1.5h to walk over to Marmara (a great place for a swim), 3h to go up the Gorge, and 1h to return to Anopolis via an old mule track. The circuit as a whole is varied and rewarding. This gorge itself is majestic but also atmospheric and slightly foreboding. The air inside is incredibly still and any sound echoes off the cliffs on each side. There are several dead goats, which smell awful, but also sections with flowers and birds. Near the top the path branches and you can choose to climb the ladders, which are a bit rickety, or take a path with stone steps and wooden handrails which goes up the side of the gorge.

Spectacular! Make sure you don't wear sandals or flip-flops! Trainers ok as long as the grip is good and they have decent support. Absolutely beautiful, but be prepared to climb down a 20-m-high ladder, unless you are just going for a walk some of the way from Marmara Beach end. Marmara Beach is an amazing place to celebrate the feat of getting down in one piece, with beautiful rocks for diving off, caves, a tiny beach bar and a great restaurant on top overlooking the beach and sea.

Beautiful. Magestic, powerful. Not a hike for the injured. Contains a few difficult climbs.

A truly beautiful scenery and beautiful nature. I would recommend it Everybody who likes the nature but also like a little adventure because it's not only walking but also climbing and sliding. Klados in Rethymnon Greece is a very good organisation and Sakis is one of the best guides.

Great walk! Rope to help you down a steep bit before the ladders, the ladders were fun. Definitely not for new hikers, parts of it are at least a grade 1 scramble. Ask in the taverna at the bottom and he can ring a guy up to give you a lift back up to the top. About 20min walk to the pickup point, cost €25.

Very beautiful gorge, but not always very easy. Some parts you really have to climb and crawl over river stones. But there are also good parts where you can walk easily. We missed the ladders, apparantly they are somewhere near the stone stairs in the gorge, so pay attention there if you want to use them. Marmara beach is very rewarding. Go in the morning! We took from Chóra Sfakíon a taxi to the start of the gorge and walked from Marmara to Loutro and from there on we took a boat. But it was very hot, and the last part almost no shadow. So be wise and don’t do it in the summer (lesson learned...)

Quite challenging but worth taking the trail down to the beach. From the beach you can walk to Loutro or take a boat to other places.

Probability the most beautiful gorge on the whole island, it is 7 km in length it is moderate difficulty due to the path being full of stones. Also in the middle it splits on two paths an easy one and a hard one, the hard one is the most beautiful part of the gorge, but you will need to climb down two metal ladders and use rope to get down from few big rocks, the rope is already installed. The best part of the gorge is also the end point which is Marmara, extremely beautiful beach with tons of caves to explore, there is also a restaurant with very delicious food.
