As
of
2023-07-03,
upgrades
to
the
memorial
park
were
underway.
Walking
trails
have
been
extended
and
the
park
is
becoming
more
tied
to
Chas.
FD
Station
11
in
the
adjacent
property.
A
nice
touch
that
was
being
added
on
this
visit
were
monuments
of
brick
which
mark
the
cornerstones
of
the
Sofa
Super
Store,
as
it
existed
2007-06-17,
on
the
day
of
the
most
tragic
loss
of
first
responders
since
2001-09-11.
This
is
just
a
memorial
park
with
a
few
benches
along
the
walking
trails.
The
trails
are
gravel,
so
you'll
need
footwear
above
a
mere
pair
of
flip-flops.
There
are
no
amenities,
areas
to
congregate
to
spend
time
in
reflection,
nor
is
any
part
of
the
park
fenced
or
dog
stations
integrated;
therefore
it
isn't
dog-friendly.
There
was
a
portable
toilet
on-site,
but
it's
likely
that
will
be
removed
when
the
upgrades
are
completed.
The
site
is
not
engineered
to
direct
you
toward
the
memorial,
engraved
bricks.
You
will
just
have
to
know
that
you
need
to
walk
up
to
Station
11,
of
the
adjacent
property,
to
view
the
laid
brick
pavers
along
the
East
wall
of
the
fire
house.
Some
people
bring
flowers
or
other
items
to
leave
at
the
placemarkers
where
each
of
the
nine
firefighters
died
or
with
the
nine,
white
PVC
crosses
that
are
directly
outside
of
the
park
along
Savannah
Hwy.
_______
Fun
fact:
The
nine,
white
PVC
crosses
were
the
first
community-erected
memorials
immediately
following
the
day
of
the
tragedy.
They
were
put
up,
while
the
ATF
was
conducting
its
investigation,
and
before
any
proposals
were
made
to
what
would
replace
the
collapsed
warehouses
on
that
property.
Occasionally,
citizens
will
replace
and
refresh
the
makeshift
PVC
crossesโkeeping
them
erected
along
the
highway
with
no
funding
by
the
cityโand
have
existed
in
their
current
places
sixteen
years
strong.
