I was mostly excited to visit this museum to learn more about art that represents my culture. I was disappointed. There is very little artwork. There were several empty canvases on the wall. It took approximately five minutes to view the couple of galleries they have. I wanted to give this museum positive reviews because I really want to support African American artists. However, I believe businesses have a responsibility to give their customers quality for their money. I didn't leave feeling like I had a great experience.

Museum was incredible! Great layout, fantastic representation, and curation. Loved the 3rd floor exhibits. Gift store features products made by local BIPOC small business owners as well as a great selection of childrens books and more. The staff was incredibly friendly. We had luggage to store while we visited and they happily stored our luggage so we could enjoy the museum. I will definitely be back!

Enjoyed my visit to the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture. I love the architecture of this building. It's located off South Tryon Street in Uptown Charlotte, NC. The tickets are inexpensive and there is free, off the street parking available. The host was very nice and informative. They currently have 3 exhibits Visible Man: Art and Black Male Subjectivity, FuturePresent: Acquisition Highlights from the Permanent Collection, and Reflections of a People: Photographs from the Archive of Jamel Shabazz. I enjoyed the unique pieces by Radcliffe Bailey and Ernest Shaw. Some of the captiviting photos by Shabazz give you a glimpse of Black culture in New York around the 1970s and early 80s. All amazing exhibits with great pieces that embody the Black culture. Great experience.

Update 12/27/2023 - Enjoyed a night out at the museum with family. The museum celebrated Kwanzaa with free admission. . They also have a great gift shop. (See photos ) The museum has a little something for everyone. Lots of free events. Recently, my husband and I checked out one of these events. They were celebrating the 50-year anniversary of Hip Hop. They also have a nice gift shop. Prices are very reasonable.

Stunning Center and exhibit space, designed by architect Phillip Freelon, co-designer of the Smithsonian National Museum for African-American History and Culture. The current exhibition, through January 16 2022, is great -- contemporary Black Carolina artists working in a variety of media. The quilts alone are worth the modest price of admission (see photos).

Amazing! Handicap accessible. Great for kids of all ages. I went with a group of 15 kids (ages 6-15) and all were entertained on our guided tour. Very impressive with all exhibits. I definitely recommend a guided tour because she showed us things we otherwise wouldn’t have noticed. Must See!!!! No food /drink in the museum.

This museum was awesome. I really enjoyed the men of change exhibit. I do wish there was a bit more art and abstracts in the rest of the museum. Definitely need more black artist to donate to their exhibits. I look forward to visiting again and seeing an expansion on the art exhibits. "MEN OF CHANGE" was a very good exhibit. More importantly the staff was amazing!

This museum has some of the most beautiful and intricately done artwork I've ever seen. Very digestible, but you could also spend hours there if you wanted. The gift shop has very nice items too!

We had such a good time at this museum. We went early on a Saturday. The museum is on a smaller scale but it really gave you more time to focus and enjoy the art. The exhibit “Choose a Weapon” was the most powerful art exhibit I’ve seen. Brought me to tears. Thankful for the free admission and free public parking across the street. I highly recommend.

This was my first time visiting the Gantt Center for an exhibition and I will certainly be returning. I had the opportunity to sit in on a Q&A with Christopher Myers and listen to the inspiration behind the art. Phenomenal experience and atmosphere.

Sad to say but this museum was very underwhelming. I figured bringing my kids during black history month I'd be immersed in wall to wall art and other forms of visual imagery. To my dismay it was as dry and stale as expires crackers. The info video gets you so hyped about what your about to experience but the actual galleries leave much to the imagination. I'm hoping that I caught the museum on the wrong day. I'll give it another chance later in the month. But my first experience was one I'd like to forget.

Anyone that’s creative in the Charlotte Metro area should come to the Harvey B. Gantt Center. I love the atmosphere and how regionally centered the curated art work can be. Smaller gallery, but definitely has a ton to offer.

While this museum was small, there were some amazing art pieces. I loved seeing black artists work on display. I went close to closing so I had the place to myself which was cool. I wish there was more, but nevertheless it was a great experience! Excited to visit again in the future!

Went there during Martin Luther King Day 2023 to see Men of Change Exhibit- it’s a travelling tour & Charlotte got the first stop. Loved it! Very educational- so much good is happening and all the news media can do is give you bad news. It would serve you well to spend time visiting this and other museums!!! Easy to access, beautiful building, great restrooms….all a good experience.

February was my first time visiting the Harvey B. Gantt Center. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit. Although small the 3 exhibits were beautiful and intriguing! The art speaks for itself and the pieces selected for each exhibit were well selected. It was a great way to celebrate Black History Month and I am glad Ashley and Yelp selected this event for the elites to experience! The building was beautiful on the inside and very clean. They have a very nice gift shop located on the first floor with lots of items from Black owned businesses, lots of items affordable also. The ticket counter and one exhibit is located on the 2nd floor and the 2 other exhibits are located on the 3rd floor. The 4th floor is used for events I believe. I highly recommend if you've never been!

The downtown art scene in Charlotte is proud and it should be. This center in particular gives it plenty to be proud of. The different art styles displayed here from canvas to quilt are exceptionally rendered and preserved. There are plenty of opportunities to learn while you're there as well. Give it a visit

Had an amazing experience at the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African American Arts and Culture. The Center itself is a work of art. The attendants were friendly and very knowledgable. The shop on the first level has an amazing collection of products from local makers, teas, candles, books, handbags. Each level has a different collection on display. One of my favorite exhibitions was by Billie Zangewa, “Thread for a Web Begun.” Highly recommend visiting the Center!
