My favorite sushi place for a very reasonable price for the quality. They have an excellent selection of sushi/sushi rolls both fried and fresh. The inside is intimate but very small. If you don't like being close to other tables this isn't your spot. The good news is their take out service is excellent. Best takeout sushi I've had anywhere. They really go the extra mile to make it look nice (see pics) as well as study and safe to transport home. The service in the restaurant though is very friendly and good. Love this place.

This is a great place to get sushi in Charlotte! It is a small restaurant with not many seats, but the atmosphere was very nice and cozy. I got the sushi and sashimi combo and it was great! The fish was very fresh and tasty. Their menu is very big so there is something for everyone. Would recommend!

Such a great sushi place a little bit outside of the Charlotte City area. But it's definitely worth the drive! The quality of the sushi and price is unmatched. Around dinner can be busy and it's first come first serve, so be prepared for a short wait.

Hadn't been here in years. Stopped by for a late dinner. The person who took my order was pleasant. I really didn't know what I wanted; just wanted something spicy. She recommended a few different rolls. I wanted to try something different & went with the eel she was telling me about. I'd decided on one roll & wanted to change to just the last roll she suggested. Guess she didn't understand what I was saying with my mask on. Didn't realize til I was paying that she had 2 rolls on the order. Wasn't going to make it an issue & just paid. I also ordered a spring roll. She did ask my preference & I asked for crab. Was disappointed when I got home & realized it was fake crab. I guess with all the other fresh seafood, I thought it'd be real crab meat. I deducted a star from the review because of the service I received when I picked up my order. When my order was placed, I was told it'd be ready in 15 mins. I walked to the adjacent grocery store, picked up a few things & came back. When I got to the counter, I told the lady I was picking up a take out order. I believe she wore glasses & was older. She was doing something with receipts. I gave her my order number & she coldly just slid the glass partition, dropped the bag down, closed the partition, & went right back to whatever she was doing with the receipts. The sushi was good, but the service when I picked up the food left a bad taste in my mouth. Doubt I'll be back.

New Zealand is located off Monroe along the Matthews border. It’s a small but great spot for fresh sushi. They’re back open to in person dining post-Covid and the food continues to remain consistent after all these years. While NZ has assorted bentos and entrees, the nigiri options and rolls are the top things to order. Toro and Sake are my favorite nigiri options. The rolls I gravitate towards are the Rainbow Roll, HOT Roll and Sweet Dragon (Tempura, Eel & Avocado). Service is friendly and the food comes out quick. There are a few tables out front for outside dining on those hot summer nights. Great spot off Monroe in an under appreciated part of Charlotte.

My wife and I treat ourselves to a large sushi dinner here once a month, sometime twice, sometimes three times if one of us has a really really bad day. Honestly this sushi is amazing for the price, one of the best. We ate in here before covid, it was a small place, I'm a large person and I felt in the way wherever I sat. The play we found works best is to order and pick it up, we have the good soy sauce at home anyways. Our large order, listed below takes them usally 45-55 minutes to complete on the busiest day, get a seperate box for each person's order to mitigate spousal theft. The best sushi in Charlotte, or atleast for this price point. Just a really great staff and kitchen. Always very clean. Last month's order: Husband: Vegtable spring roll Salt and pepper calamari smoked salmon roll yellowtail roll horseradish role bigger role seperate box, this is key unless you really know your fish Wife: seaweed salad 2 tuna nigiri tuna roll red dragon roll volcano roll 2 miso soup bamboo role bigger role

I was eating outside from another restaurant with my family when one of New Zealand Cafe employees came outside and started to chat with us. Long story short I went in and ordered some bang bang shrimp which was pretty good. I like the vibe inside of the restaurant it seem pretty chill. I haven’t eaten enough from here to give a full review but so far I’ve like it.

Every single food item was fantastic, servers came over and talked with us. Great personalities and this was my 1st meal in North Carolina! Just got off the plane and was happy they were still open late. The sushi chef came out and sat with some customers and had shots!! Love it. Plus it was super clean!

Came in on a Monday around 3pm, not busy. Had to dispute the Crab salad as it was mostly cucumbers etc. Spicy tuna and super tomb (personal favorite) was ordered. I bit into one roll with an inch of plastic from the shrimp I assume… almost choked. Food is still my top sushi spot, however, manager did not want to refund the salad I returned. They did provide-an additional roll but it seemed forced. Experience made me want to look elsewhere for sushi. Almost choking on the strip of plastic.. pictured below leaves no room for interpretation. Please do better, there is quality flavor here, dont get lazy.

Loved this beautiful little sushi restaurant. They have won several awards and is very highly rated place in the area. We got a several : volcano roll, dragon roll and cruncy spicy tuna. Not the best we had but its good. Worth the hype. Note: since the place is small, it could be busy duting prime hours and wait time can vary. Enjoy!

New Zealand is by far the best sushi in the Charlotte area! I have been coming here for 20 years and they continually deliver the freshest and tastiest sushi time and time again. I have dined in and ordered take out and the high quality remains the same. Their service is also very friendly and efficient. If you want excellent sushi, at a reasonable price, that tastes better than the expensive sushi places in Charlotte, New Zealand is the answer!

Best sushi ever!!! And although it’s a tiny place with limited tables it’s so worth the wait. During weekends they are pretty busy. But taste of sushi is just yum!!! Always new always fresh and amazing staff!!! Their trick is simply in awesome rice!!! Rice cooked to perfection!!!

The absolute best sushi in the Charlotte area, we always are willing to make the trip to pick up dinner from this place. At first, we were skeptical due to the name, however, we have sense become well aware that this place is one of those gems of Charlotte.

We had a 15-20 minute wait for 2 around 8pm on a weeknight - the sake and sushi prices are worth the minor wait. The fish always tastes fresh and there’s a good variety of rolls to choose from. The restaurants dining area is smaller than most - but I think that adds to the cozy atmosphere.

The always appear to be busy. The food does come out quick. I enjoyed seeing the sushi being made. It is a small place but a lot of people can be seated inside and there is seating outside. The presentation of the food is beautiful.

Food was excellent, and the portions were very reasonable. The place was hopping on Saturday night, but we still received quality service and food. Will definitely be coming again. Would recommend the "Favorite" roll - the Crispy Tuna was also quite nice (those two pictured here). Also tried the Sweet Dragon and Crispy Bagel rolls

The best sushi I'll eat this far from the coast. The restaurant isn't ritzy or bank breaking like sushi joints usually are thanks to the popularity as of late.

The food was great! We got the teriyaki chicken, fantasy shrimp, squid salad, philly, spicy general sushi rolls and some nigri. Loved mostly everything once it came! The chicken stewer was on the drier side.. Our waiter was present. But, 1 persons order was forgotten and it took almost 30 minutes after most of us already finished our food before their food came.

Waited 30 minutes to be seated because of how popular it is. Decided to get the sushi sashimi combo. Started with a hot sake, which was generally what I expected. Miso soup was good. The rice in the sushi was not of good quality and brought down the flavor and enjoyment of the meal.

Fire hazard for sure- max occupancy is 28 - yet there was 41 seats and all full. Food is great as always, service sucked. Waitress too busy seating more tables that the tables who have already been seated are sitting there getting no service my table sat there for an hour before we even got drink orders taken. Received sodas that were all flat and it took another 30 min just to get them replaced (though they didn’t change the co2 tank so we’re still flat . Then it was another long waiting game for food and even longer waiting for the check Only 2 stars because to food is good. 3 hours start to finish is unacceptable

The best sushi in Charlotte! Always good, always fresh - it never disappoints! It's a tiny restaurant, so if you don't want to wait, try going at off hours (early or late lunch) or ordering take-out.

Pleasant experience. Quality of sushi was reasonable. Kind of expensive for what I’m used to in California but overall nice place. It’s not a big spot but NZ is one of the best options in the city within a 20 mile radius. We got the sushi boat and it’s great for 2 adults. We spent about $40 a person

I have visited several times over the years, and have never been disappointed. Hands down the best sushi in the area. Also, they have excellent options when it comes to fresh rolls, where competition usually has very similar rolls. Love the multiple options for the birthday entree!

TRUE New Zealand cuisine. Asian-fusion (since 1970's), regardless of what previous guy said about the name having nothing to do with the food. He doesn't know NZ food history. BEST, freshest sushi I've had in Charlotte!

I would eat here every day if I could! I love love their tempura sushi options. Plus, the sauce is awesome. They are polite and welcoming.

  • 5/5 StreetStang 3 years ago on Google
I have been to this place at least a dozen times now. If you are looking for a meal that won't disappoint and not hurt the wallet this is your spot. I'd rate their sushi a 7/10 on taste alone, but their prices are very reasonable when compared to most other locations in the Charlotte area. It is a small place and they don't take reservations, so you may have to wait a few minutes to get a table, but I highly recommend if you are in the area.

  • 4/5 Milton Irizarry J. 4 years ago on Google
Really good food, really good prices! The hibachi bento box was really good. The New Zealand chicken was amazing! Skip the fried spring rolls, they tasted like they were frozen and the dipping sauce was very low quality. Besides that the sushi was very good and very fresh! Be prepared to wait for a table though. No reservations.

  • 5/5 Kristin H. 6 years ago on Google
One of my go-to spots for sushi! Creative rolls and always fresh! The bento boxes are an excellent deal, most not more then $8. It is small spot and can get very crowded at prime dinner time. Plan ahead to avoid the rush. Everything is made to order so the sushi can sometimes take a bit to come out. The good food and good service make it worth the wait.

  • 5/5 Justin B. 5 years ago on Google
This place is the bomb!!! Reasonably priced and worth the wait. The restaurant is small and pretty much always a wait but it’s due to it being delicious. It could be triple the size and still probably have a line. They do have carry out options as well. Yes there is always someone who will have ups and down with sushi restaurants, but this one never seems to drop off from a great choice. Are there more luxurious sushi joints out there? Yes. But this “hole in the wall” small sushi place is the place to go! My favorite is the crispy bagel roll for only $6.95! Fills me up!

Changed rating due to horrific experience in take out. They are so ridiculously unprepared for 100% takeout that they shouldn't be doing it. People were crammed inside and a line going out into the street for hours. I ordered on the phone and was told 30min, took 2 hours! Other customers were very angry and having the same problem. The only way to tell if your food is ready is to go up and ask every 15min. They call numbers, but you don't get a number unless you order in person...
