The best preserved timber framed house in Sheffield. The earliest part of the house dates to 1554, owned by the Blythe family and has been added to, adapted and constantly occupied until 1976. It is now open as a museum of life in 17th century. Entry is free and though the site is small, it is definitely worth a look in. There is plenty to look at and it is fairly interactive for children. There is plenty of information available in each room, though the steep stairs and uneven flooring makes it not too disabled friendly.

Took our 4 year old there and had a great time. Medieval knights fighting with a great variety of weapons- what boy wouldn't love it? The house is also interesting and small so keeps their attention. The fact it's set in a park is a bonus with a playground and you can take a picnic. Please like helpful reviews.

Magnificent. Interesting and beautifully looked after. If you live in Sheffield and have a sense of wonder about history then this Tudor building is an absolute must. Lovely staff too.

We had our wedding at Bishops house on 29th July 2022 and it was perfect. Jenni, who coordinated it all for us, was so helpful and accommodating and the team on the day were brilliant. Bishops House is a beautiful Tudor building, the exterior is stunning and the views from the top of the park are amazing, it felt elegant and also very intimate due to the size of the building which made it feel extra special. Jenni and the team decorated it beautifully and Jenni was able to walk us through everything in advance which put us at ease and ran the day perfectly. Thank you all so much for giving us the most perfect wedding day. Jess and Andrew.

An amazing place with lots of historical items inside. Its very interactive with signs explaining what each of the items are (and some of them can be touched). I've been before to watch a historical knight battle and it was great! Its located in Meersbrooke park and is very close to a grassy hill with a view of the city. There are also 2 playgrounds; one behind it and one down the hill. I would definitely recommend visiting this place!

Walking past and one of the volunteers chatted to me about the house and told me it was free to enter. Had a look around, it’s a cute old house with rooms arranged in period fashion, plus an open indoor space where they host small events, and also a small shop selling related items and work by local artists. The volunteers were very friendly and helpful. Highly worth a look if you’re nearby.

What an amazing place to visit. As a 17c reenactor, it was such a pleasure to be able to get up and close to the items on display and feel free to explore all the books and crannies of the building. The 2 ladies at the front reception were very warm and welcoming and it was lovely to have a chat with them. They were very happy to answer any questions about the house and its artifacts as well as having good knowledge of the local area and its history in relation to the house. Wonderful example of the preservation of history and heritage.

A Sheffield historic jewel, now the friends of have reintroduced life into it. Incredible history in one of Sheffield's finest parks. Ambition is to see a performance held there, now happening more frequently.

An interesting and free (though they do ask for donations) place to visit. A very old building with several very old artifacts inside. You wander round at your own pace, 30-45 mins will allow you time to take it all in. Young kids can try and find all the model mice hidden in the house. Also worth a wander down the park for a good view of Sheffield and there's also a fitness/assault course down there for those who fancy a go. Some on road parking, might be tricker on busy days. We managed fine on a Sat in Nov.

This little museum is right by my house and tells some great history of the area. I think they need to improve what they sell in the shop though. None of the items they sell are relevant to the house or area. Some cool items made by local small businesses would be nice.

Wonderful to visit one of the oldest buildings in Sheffield. Lovely children's trail sheet. Amazing to see the W Blythe Wooden overmantel in it's place. Interesting to find the plaster overmantel piece was originally in Sheffield Castle. Good family trip with meersbrook park too.

Very interesting property. It's nice to walk inside in the uneven floors and get a taste of the past. Information displays in all rooms and informative friendly guides in hand to answer any questions. Makes you wonder how this beautiful old property survived in tact in the heart of built up Sheffield.

GOOD POINTS. Free entry. Helpful volunteers. Stuff for the kids to do. Informative. Great little bit of history situated in the park. BAD POINTS. Errr....I'm struggling to think of any. Great little hidden gem. Well worth an hour or so of your time. The events they have they are great too. Highly recommended. Ps. Just watch your head inside the building.

  • 5/5 stella e. 1 year ago on Google
Interesting place. Learnt a few things and the kids had a mini quest to find some hidden crocheted mice in the building to keep them entertained. Lovely, friendly ladies on the door to welcome you when you walk in.

A small but fascinating museum inside a historic house. The staff were very helpful and informative and the place has an incredible atmosphere engendered by the furnishings of the era and other atmospheric exhibits. Look for the witch marks on some of the doors and ask a staff member if you cannot find them.Highly recommended.

I love Bishops House, its a real gem in Sheffield. I know I'm somewhat biased as I grew up in this area and have fond memories of the House and the beautiful Meersbrook Park (amazing views over Sheffield from the top) but the house is well worth a visit. 15th century building was lived in till the 1970s !

  • 5/5 sylvia b. 4 years ago on Google
I'm a bit biased as I'm one if the volunteers helping to keep this beautiful house open. It's a Tudor building which was lived in continuously from its building to the early 70's. We have treasure trails, dressing up and pictures to colour in for children and a beautiful house to appreciate for adults. We're open 10am to 4pm every Saturday and Sunday.

One of only a few timber framed buildings left standing in Sheffield This 16th century former farm house is now buried in the suburbs of the city a different story when it was originally constructed. Then it was surrounded by fields and parkland that was Sheffield Deer Park part of the Lords of the Manor estates up until the early 18th century. As the town of Sheffield grew on population so did the need for land to build on! Parts of the former medieval deer park were sold off or let to tenants by the then owner the Duke of Norfolk and built on, Bishops House was soon enclosed by suburbia that became the city of Sheffield in the 20th century. The house survived the centuries of change and is now a museum for all to enjoy and experience The highlights being its architecture with many original features still surviving today. 😍

It's closed because of covid but when it opens, it's free entry sat and Sunday 10 til 4. Walk up thru meersbrook Park. Maybe park in the retail park at the bottom of the park, parking restrictions allowing? It dates to 1500 and is reputedly the home of 2 early Bishops who grew up there. It'll get another star once I've seen inside the museum.
