Many people go there in the early morning when it can be very crowded. We arrived there at around noon and were the only people in the area hntil we left 1.5h later. We saw everything we wanted to see and had the place for ourselves. Highly recommend going there without the crowd.

We had our own 4x4 and I would not do it again. The road is in not the best condition and you end up driving 3-4 hours in crazy noise (because the road is so bad) for like 1 hour of looking at the geysers. In my opinion not worth it. The ‘swimming bath’ was open according to the Staff - yes it was open but there was simply no water in it and it looked very yucky. Also for the timing as most people go before sunrise: we arrived shortly after 8 in the morning, which was still good for the geysers to look cool. But after around 10am the sun is too warm and pretty much all the spray from the geysers was gone and you could only see small bubbles in the ground. So even if it sounds hard, if you go there, go early! (The good thing is, after 10am the place is completely empty as all the tours have left. We were the only people inside)

Many geysers in one area, but compared to other global geysers, are small and either bubble-pots or steady steam vents. None gush columns as I expected. Our tour guide made the visit enjoyable with the sunrise views and his knowledge of the microorganisms ecosystems in the hot vents and streams. A lot of the road is bumby gravel but still worth the half-day visit

Tatio Geysers are a volcanic geothermal field, where water and steam columns spring up violently from deep under the ground. These are the highest geysers in the world. The Geysers reach their peak of activity between 5:30 am and 7:30 am, when water columns reach up to 10 meters (32.8 ft). But the temperature can go as low as -20°C then, hence dress warm

Fantastic place! Had to get up really early (4am) to get there in time, but that was well worth it!

This is a five-star review for the drive to get there. The geysers themselves are a bit underwhelming as most of them tend to only be one foot or 2 ft tall. Maybe they look taller earlier in the morning when most people go, but we went during the day which was just fine. It is still nice to walk around and see them and relax a bit. We did a self-drive all the way up and the road is fine although it is about 40 miles of gravel road. You would have no problem in a small SUV or a car. On the way up there is a lagoon filled with flamingos that was truly amazing. There was also another marsh area with plenty of animals including donkeys and guancano and other animals. There are also some surreal desert landscapes unlike any that I have seen around San Pedro. The final altitude at the geysers is just over 14,000 ft. Only downside to the geysers is it really is kind of overpriced. At 15,000 Chilean pesos per person that can put the hurt on a family of four. Also swimming is currently not allowed due to what they claim are COVID restrictions, although there don't seem to be any other COVID restrictions anywhere else in Chile

You have to wake up early to see the geysers but it's totally worth it! It's also freezing so you should put many layers before going! The negative point is that it's full of tourists...

Quite large area with active geysers. The geysers are not too big, largest eruption we saw was about 1.5m. Make sure to arrive as soon as possible, around 0730h all the geysers die down because the heat difference is not large enough anymore.

Cold in the morning, but it's the best time to see the geysers in their most active way.

Beautiful place to visit in the early morning Hours. Ticket can be purchased at the entrance 15k Chilean pesos per person. It's extremely cold, -12c when I was there and it wasn't even winter ! It is also at high altitude, 4320m. It's highly recommended to stick to the paths layed out , the salt crust's near the pools are very brittle and can break.

A must go if you are visiting the Atacama desert. The road is really not that bad, if you sleep in a van/car, I'd recommend to go there at night and sleep there (for free, access to the toilets). Then you can visit the geysers first thing in the morning. ☺️

The geysers are amazing! Get there as early as possible (7am if possible). It is extremely cold so take your best jackets with you. The price is a little steep (15,000 pesos chilenos) and it is quite far from San Pedro (1:30h drive +-).

This place is so beautiful! Best to come before sunrise even though the drive from san pedro might be quite scary in the dark. If you come early enough you get to see high activity before the tourist groups are there. Almost all activity dies out after sunrise! For us the thermal pools weren't open but they are quite small and there are many people so we wouldn't have gone anyway. Wear warm layers because it gets very cold up there! Also take some precautions because you might get altitude sickness. Keep your eyes open! We saw an andean fox ☺️ By the way! Take some time out in your schedule for the drive back to San Pedro, the route is stunning and it's lovely to make some stops on the way.

The geisers are not the most impressive part of the trip, it’s the scenery on the way there and back. Lots of wildlife in the wetlands, many flamingos, vicuña, and other birds. Many posts recommend going early to catch the sunrise but if you are driving yourself it means driving out early in the dark, which I would NOT recommend as there are many potholes, why risk getting a flat and getting stuck. The photos if the geisers from early morning aren’t that much more impressive. We drove out around 8:30 AM from San Pedro de Atacama, look our time getting there stopping along several areas to take photos of the scenery and wild life. Arrived around 11:00, there were no other tourists, had the whole site to ourselves. On the way back, couldn’t help stopping again for the wildlife.

We didn't get to see the geysers, because when we arrived at the entrance, we were informed that they had an incident as there was a lot of mud, so nobody could get through (10/02/2023). However, just the trip itself was totally worth it! Amazing scenery! Got to see flamingos and vicunas. We went with a small 2WD, the road gets bumpy however it is doable.

Beautiful area with many geysers. Come early in the morning, then they are most active. The road to this place is quite tough. We would recommend a 4 wheel drive.

Spectacular range of volcanic geysers. About 1.5 hours from San Pedro Atacama, ride is a bit rough, but worth it. Altitude at 14000+ may pose a risk to some.

Very natural hot spring. There are five pools to visit. Walk down is wonderful and private cars are now allowed to go so may have to take a walk 5 min and come up. They have toilets and changing rooms and lockers. Wonderful natural water. You can go on a further hike too.

A must go place. Don't forget to wear warm clothes

An amazing place to see geysers but the thermal pool is still closed ("due to covid") despite other similar attractions being open, hence 4*. Entrance fee is unchanged at 15,000CLP. Yeah the road isn't great - if you take your own car make sure it's an SUV/4x4. Take layers and enjoy!

I was speechless… beautiful place. Book a tour, don’t be frugal and make sure to bring your winter clothes.

Not the best but not the worst. I wouldn't go again. It's very pricey for what you see compared to all the other attractions that you can visit. It's about a 4hour round trip just in the bus over very bumpy roads. So keep that in mind if you visit. It's nice to be able to say that you have visited the highest geothermal field in the world but realistically thats about it for me.

Absolutely amazing. This place cannot be missed in Chile. It is a long drive from San Pedro de Atacama but even the road is spectacular in this high altitude desert surrounded by volcanoes. On sight, with the different light, it feels lunar, but with water around. These pictures are from 1992 taken during a 1 year South Americ tour. After the visit, don't miss the hot pools.

Amazing place. One of the most unique places I have been in the world. Highly recommend it. It’s very cold, around -6 C, so go prepared with layers, gloves and all.

Amazing place if you have never seen glaciers. 90 mins from San Pedro on a very shaky round- better on the way back as some really nice lagunes with flamencos. Area itself is busy with loads of tour vans at 6.45am. Best time to see them is before sun rise as the temperature difference allows for more dramatic vapour. Just be beware that temperatures prior to sunrise is about 0’C- so dress warmly. Could spend an hour or more walking around the various geysers. There is a toilet facility at the entrance. No food facilities at the location.

Wonderful tour, beautiful views, fantastic guide (Jefferson from Atacamazoom), great expensive, including having the can stuck in the sand. Will never forget!

A short stop here to take a look at the geysers before we started our hike of the Tatio area. A lot of nice photo opportunities, plenty of space to park. Worth a stop if you are touring the Atacama desert region.

Field of small geyser, small fountains with fast periodic activity. Beautiful mix of ice (you are above 4000 meters) and steam. Beautiful green-brown colors of the algae. Friendly white and black birds looking for some food from you.

  • 5/5 Richard scott C. 1 year ago on Google
Really interesting and fun it's fun being up in the steam from the geysers cold up there though! Best if you get there before the sun comes up

With a regular rented car the drive was 2 hours and 45 minutes each way. The road is horrible (I have driven in Mexico, Guatemala, etc and this is the worse road ever). It would have been much better to buy a tour and be driven by professional, saving time and stress. In April at 8:45 the steam was 3 people high, by 9:40 the steam was to my waist.

What an amazing place to visit. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who goes to San Pedro de Atacama. There are many tour agencies offering excursions to the volcanic Geysers and one can expect to pay around 60.000 CLP in total for a half day experience there. It's quite expensive but worth it or "vale la pena" as one would say in Chile. Enjoy!

👍👍 Unfortunately we were too late to see the geysers in their full glory. The staff was really super nice and gave us good advice. Unfortunately the thermal baths were closed. Tip: It's best to get up early and go there. The best time there is at 6am.
