An
entire
museum
is
dedicated
to
Shevchenko’s
most
famous
book
“Kobzar”.
It
was
opened
in
1989
in
the
Tsibulsky
house,
in
the
center
of
Cherkassy.
The
poet
lived
with
this
family
for
four
days
in
1859.
Visiting
the
museum
is
free,
but
you
have
to
pay
10
UAH
for
taking
photographs.
The
museum
seemed
intimate
and
soulful
to
me.
The
attendant
offered
to
call
a
research
assistant,
and
this
employee,
a
nice
girl,
not
only
explained
it,
but
also
gave
a
full
educational
tour.
Never
in
my
life
have
I
been
given
individual
excursions,
and
even
free
ones.
The
museum
has
three
halls,
in
them
are
lifetime
and
posthumous
publications
before
1917,
an
exhibition
about
Shevchenko’s
stay
in
Cherkassy,
as
well
as
Soviet
and
modern
Shevchenko
literature,
translations.
It
seemed
to
me
that
the
museum
should
have
a
lot
of
ancient
publications,
but
no,
there
are
more
modern
books
published
in
different
cities
and
countries.
During
the
poet’s
lifetime,
Kobzar
was
reprinted
4
times,
and
during
the
USSR
its
circulation
totaled
8
million
copies.
It
is
interesting
that
the
first
“Kobzar”
of
1840,
which
Shevchenko
himself
prepared
for
release,
included
only
eight
works,
each
of
them
has
a
separate
showcase.
Then
he
expanded
the
book,
and
the
lifetime
edition
of
1860
already
contained
seventeen
works.
This
“Kobzar”
was
printed
at
the
expense
of
sugar
factory
and
philanthropist
Platon
Simirenko,
who
donated
1,100
rubles.
And
posthumous
publications
with
the
title
“Kobzar”
were
published
both
in
two
volumes
and
in
multi-volume
editions.
For
example,
I
also
have
a
very
thick
“Kobzar”
with
a
large
number
of
works.
The
collection
has
been
translated
into
more
than
140
languages,
and
these
multilingual
editions
are
also
presented
in
the
museum.
There
is
even
Kobzar
in
Japanese,
although
I
can’t
imagine
how
the
Japanese
understand
the
Ukrainian
realities
of
the
19th
century
such
as
corvée,
serfs.
This
cannot
be
understood
without
comments.
And
then
the
museum
staff
kindly
showed
me
a
spacious,
restored
basement
room
where
temporary
exhibitions,
literary
meetings,
and
scientific
conferences
are
held.
I
am
very
touched
by
their
attention
and
hospitality.
