Chernigov
Collegium
At
the
end
of
the
17th
century,
on
the
territory
of
the
cathedral
Boris
and
Gleb
Monastery
-
the
residence
of
the
Chernigov
archbishops,
on
the
initiative
of
the
Chernigov
Archbishop
Lazar
Baranovich,
a
two-tier
refectory
was
erected
for
the
brethren.
In
1702,
Chernigov
Archbishop
John
Maksimovich
consecrated
the
bell
tower
attached
to
the
monastery
refectory,
which
had
the
Church
of
All
Saints
in
the
eastern
part.
Unfortunately,
two
domes
of
this
church
have
not
survived.
In
the
bell
tower,
built
at
the
expense
of
Hetman
Ivan
Mazepa,
there
was
a
church
named
after
the
hetman’s
patron
saint,
John
the
Baptist.
The
upper
part
of
this
bell
tower
was
decorated
with
ceramic
icons
of
“The
Savior
Not
Made
by
Hands”
and
“Our
Lady
of
the
Sign”,
which
have
survived
to
this
day.
At
the
end
of
the
19th
century,
in
the
western
part
of
the
bell
tower,
the
“Red
Porch”
was
added
-
the
main
entrance,
in
the
style
of
Moscow
architecture.
From
1700
to
1786,
the
Collegium,
the
first
higher-level
educational
institution
in
Left
Bank
Ukraine,
was
located
on
the
territory
of
the
monastery,
and
a
philosophical
class
was
taught
in
the
monastery
refectory.
During
the
Second
World
War,
the
building
was
almost
completely
burned,
and
it
was
restored
in
the
fifties
of
the
last
century,
according
to
the
design
of
the
Kyiv
architect
N.
Govdenko.
Today,
this
building
houses
ongoing
exhibitions
of
Ukrainian
icon
painting,
an
exhibition
dedicated
to
the
history
of
the
Collegium
and
Chernigov
and
Chernigov
people
100
years
ago.
The
Chernigov
Collegium
is
part
of
the
national
historical
and
architectural
reserve
"Chernigov
Ancient"
(its
administrative
building)
and
belongs
to
the
architectural
monuments
of
national
significance.
