Kozelets
The
town's
main
cathedral
and
architectural
attraction
is
the
Cathedral
of
the
Nativity
of
the
Blessed
Virgin.
The
cathedral
was
built
in
the
mid-18th
century
in
the
late
Ukrainian
Baroque
style
by
architects
Ivan
Hryhorovych-Barskyi
and
Andrei
Kvasov,
according
to
a
project
by
imperial
architect
Francesco
Bartolomeo
Rastrelli.
Funds
for
the
construction
of
the
cathedral
were
provided
by
Alexey
and
Kyrylo
Rozumovsky
(the
latter
was
appointed
Hetman
in
1750).
The
Cathedral
consists
of
two
tiers.
The
first
one
is
the
Church
of
Adrian
and
Natalia
–
Rozumovsky
tomb.
The
second
is
the
Cathedral.
The
interior
design
is
represented
by
carving
and
gilding.
The
decoration
of
the
cathedral
includes
a
five-finger
iconostasis,
carved
out
of
wood
by
the
Italian
masters
from
drawings
of
the
architect
Rastrelli.
There
is
an
interesting
story
about
how
the
iconostasis
appeared
in
Kozelets.
He
was
made
for
the
St.
Petersburg
Smolny
Convent.
But
Rozumovsky
brothers,
being
in
Elizabeth’s
good
graces,
have
transported
the
27
meter
high
iconostasis
to
Kozelets.
However,
the
attempt
to
install
it
in
the
cathedral
in
one
piece
was
not
successful.
It
was
decided
to
send
the
parts
to
the
church
in
the
native
village
of
Rozumovsky.
The
iconostasis
consisted
of
80
icons,
50
of
them
have
remained
until
now.
And
divine
force
invites
you
to
enter
the
cathedral,
to
pray,
to
light
a
candle
and
to
think
about
the
life.
