Really neat monument with a special story behind it. Some of the people who worked on the 4th reactor, known as "liquidators" constructed the monument themselves after the government refused to fund a monument for them, I guess because that would require them to acknowledge that some of their deaths were caused by the accident? So they physically made their own monument, using some real world gear to make the sculpture.

It is very touching and emotional being there. It is “just” a sculpture, but what it represents means so much more. You can only visit with a permit, but if you are on a tour, you will visit anyway.

A tribute to those who gave their lives to save others. This monument is here to honour those that went in to the plant knowing they were essentially doing a suicide mission, yet they still went in to face the horror.

Standing in front of this monument and listening to the history of its meaning will leave you in awe of those it represents. One of the details revealed during our visit is that certain objects within the monument are real items covered with cement.

This is an impressive monument to the firemen, scientists and engineers who tried to help after the Chernobyl accident, poor souls who mostly died horrible unimaginable deaths. All deserve thanks especially the few men who went on a suicide mission underneath the reactor to drain the water that would have caused an even more devastating and wide reaching explosion.

Greatest sacrifice one can make - I really recommend the stories about the firefighters from Voices from Chernobyl from Svetlana Alexievich - they are absolutely stunning.

Dramatic monument, our tour guide told us that part of the clothes of the first Fireman brigade are build in the monument.
