Amazing cathedral, its even more beautiful when seen from the bell tower. this make climbing the wooden steps of bell tower, worth it. Architectural beauty from inside out. the paintings depicted on the walls are something to be mesmerized with. the atmosphere is so clam, its wonderful to be there. The entrance is chargeable given it also attracts tourists, the fee is nominal at 60 UAH. have cafe and washrooms inside with beautiful garden. can spend hours if one wishes to.

The visit of the cathedral was a nice experience. We were a but disappointed by the side buildings / museum which didn't add too much value to the day (but are very cheap to access) but entering the main cathedrale Sainte-Sophia and going on top of the entrance tower was a wonderful experience. The inside of cathedrale is very rich in decoration and the view from the bell is astonishing.

(Translated by Google) It just became horror for me when I wanted to go to the temple, and the voice of a security guard behind me, girl first take a ticket, 25 UAH to walk inside the neighborhood, 30 UAH to climb the bell tower. No words .... I am a believer and I do not understand why I have to pay at the entrance to the temple, I can understand that you can voluntarily donate money for the development of the temple, but excuse me not to print tickets and not put a turnstile and a guard at the entrance. This is simply unacceptable.

Differently from the church of Saint Andrews, in Andreevski Descent, this is a real cathedral. Founded in 1037 (and finished 20 years later), it was the first Ukrainian site included in the Unesco World Heritage List since 1990 and it is, of course, one of Kiev's main touristic attractions.

It has a breathtaking structure. Those who want to climb the bell tower will experience the feeling of height after the first floor. There's enough space upstairs on the first floor. The view is spectacular especially in the evenings and cristmas time. The cathedral is one of the oldest and best examples. Mysterious architecture is a marvel. It is already under UNESCO protection. Narrow doors, arched passages, wall frescoes take you on a journey through time.

Big complex of churches and museums with a panoramic view on a square. Highly recommend to visit the Bell tower (75m high), which is right on the main enter. It’ll cost 60 UAH and it’ll definitely worth it

I headed over to St. Sophia’s Cathedral, which was massive and enchanting, but also super dark, cold and fascinating. The nuns were everywhere to be found and the big entrance was really lovely, but the star of the show is the giant egg display upstairs. It’s a 15,000 painted egg mosaic made in about 10 years ago. The coolest part was that the artist enlisted the help of schoolchildren in order to paint all the eggs needed for the project.

Also included in the same World Heritage Site, Saint Sophia’s Cathedral is Kiev’s oldest surviving church and has architecture and ornamentation dating back to the 1000s. Like the Pechersk Lavra it’s been elected one of the Ukraine’s Seven Wonders. The cathedral, famed for its 13 gilded domes, was initiated in 1037 by Prince Yaroslav the Wise whose sarcophagus is on display. You have to take your time shuffling around the interior because of the sheer quantity of medieval frescos and mosaics that have survived since the cathedral was built. The pinnacle is the Orans of Kiev icon in the chancel vault, standing six metres high and depicting the Virgin Mary. In the monastic buildings there’s a museum showing medieval artefacts from the cathedral and a model of Kiev before it was annihilated by the Mongols in 1240.

All Kiev itself speaks for the people of this country - you can see their devotion and love for their God and religion. Architecture is their primary language, a beautiful one indeed! To see this thousand year old church and to learn about their millennial city organizing skills makes us, 21st century mortals wonder, how we will be present in the life of those people in a short 100 year from now? The Cathedral and the surroundings are beautiful, worth to immerse yourself to the atmosphere even for a short time!

Come here to experience Byzantine Architecture and some history. Note that you are looking at a mishmash of time periods and styles in one “frame”. The faded and stylish drawings are the originals, the simpler style ones are much more recent renovation efforts. The QR codes directing to an online guide are helpful. Go upstairs to see an original, vivid old-style mosaic taken from another church before it was demolished. Visit the balcony and gaze down on the first floor, as the royals did at this very spot some 1000 years ago.

Very interesting place for every tourist and Ukrainian - it is like time machine, where you got back almost 1000 years back. You find there unique architecture and paintings on the wall. No words would be needed, if i will mention that this cathedral is protected by UNESCO.

Tramendous historical place to visit, built in the 11th century. Several buildings with excibitions and fresco on the religious topics. I would advise to explore it with the guided tour and buy souvenirs. As I was born in this city, I have visited it many times. Attached are 2 old historical photos that I liked and my photos :)

(Translated by Google) I was surprised to learn. that someone else was paying to climb the bell towers. A couple of years ago I climbed completely free of charge, and the entrance to the temple is free. as now I don’t know, I will not argue, but if the prices, as people write for 20-30 hryvnias, it’s still worth it. As for me, this is a purely symbolic payment for the salary of a cleaner or someone else who monitors cleanliness and order, since people are different and there are a lot of pigs among them.

St. Sophia Cathedral is famous for its architecture and interior. Initially, it was built as the main temple of Russia, so it is very difficult to find similar buildings, for example, in Byzantium. Although the builders were discharged directly from Constantinople. In terms of symbolism, the high dome of the temple reminds parishioners of Jesus Christ. Twelve small domes are about the apostles, and four of them symbolize the evangelists who preached the teachings of Christ.

The murals and mosaics of this church are some of the oldest and finest artworks surviving in Kyiv and are well worth the visit. St Sophia Cathedral is entered through a gate running beneath the high bell tower where one can purchase tickets. The church itself is probably the oldest surviving church of the Kievan Rus, dating to the 11th century. The interior has survived mostly intact, but some additions have been made. In certain places the plasterwork on the exterior has been removed to allow the original stone and brickwork to be seen. The bell tower can be climbed and gives great views, but is tricky for those who are afraid of heights. It was one of the very few buildings to survive the Mongol destruction of the city in 1240. It is unclear why the church was spared. Legends recount that the praying figure of Mary turned back an arrow of the Mongols and that this persuaded them to leave the church intact (the golden mosaic of Mary is in a curved aperture that might have deflected arrows oddly). But it is more likely that the Mongol commanders wanted to preserve some churches, to leave some measure of organisation behind them. It is interesting to think that Mongol commanders like Batu Khan, or Subutai Bahadur (perhaps the most successful general in history) had almost certainly walked here. The walls are deeply scored with old Cyrillic writing, not graffiti in the usual sense, but records of transactions. The princes, merchants and nobles of old Kiev would use the walls of the church as a place to scratch records of their marriages and sales. For those who can read it, the church itself is a historical document, probably the oldest primary source of the history of the Rus. A coffin lay to the left of the icon wall, supposedly the resting place of Yaroslav the Wise. Yaroslav had taken the throne from his brother (the wonderfully named Sviatopolk the Accursed) and created a law code for the Rus. His body no longer rests here however and may have been stolen during the Second World War.

A quiet sanctury from the hussle and bussle of Kiev. The walled compound (coupled with the deep snow) made it incredibly peaceful. I overheard a tourguide mention it was the first Orthodox church in Kiev. When I was there an old man was busking with a guitar harp hybrid instrument (Ukrainian apparently) singing what I can only assume were Russian songs of unrequited love. It was incredibly moving in the stillness and quiet surroundings.

What else to see in Kiev? The amazing St. Sophia Cathedral will be the best place for lovers of religious and historical monuments. The building was erected in the 11th century in the central part of the capital by order of Yaroslav the Wise. Later, the cathedral was rebuilt and given elements of the Ukrainian Baroque architectural style. Having visited the temple, you will see a large number of ancient frescoes, unique mosaic images, including the legendary mosaic called Our Lady of Oranta.

Çok özel bir katedral gerçekten. İhtişamlı ve çok yüksek. Çan kulesine çıkılabiliyor, epey bir merdiven çıkıyorsunuz. 1000 yıllık bir yapı. Yavaş yavaş gezin ve keyfini çıkarın. Bahçe girişinde dolaşan ve elinde şahinle fotoğrafınızı çekmek isteyen ufak gruplar var, para kaptırmamanızı öneririm, cüzdanınızda TL veya USD falan görürlerse iştahları kabarıyor. (Translated by Google) The Cathedral of St. Sophia (St. Sophia Cathedral, Kiev St. Sophia Cathedral) is a temple built in the first half of the 11th century in the center of Kiev, according to the chronicle, by Prince Yaroslav the Wise at the site of the victory over the Pechenegs in 1036. At the turn of the 17th-18th centuries, it was externally rebuilt in the Ukrainian Baroque style. Inside the cathedral, the world's most complete ensemble of original mosaics (260 m² [1]) and frescoes (3000 m²) [2] from the first half of the 11th century and significant fragments of murals from the 17th-18th centuries have been preserved. In Soviet times, it was a functioning temple until 1929, in 1934 it became a museum - the Sofia reserve. Nowadays it is the heart of the National Reserve "Sophia Kievskaya" [3], one of the largest museum centers in Ukraine, which also includes the Golden Gate of the 11th century, St. Cyril's Church of the 12th century and St. Andrew's Church of the 18th century in Kiev. In 1990, St. Sophia Cathedral, like the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, became the first architectural monument in Ukraine included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Since the building of the cathedral is part of the National Reserve "Sophia Kievskaya", and is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, it is forbidden to transfer it to any religious organization and to perform divine services in it. The exception is the day of August 24 - Independence Day of Ukraine, when representatives of religious organizations pray for Ukraine (was introduced in 2005); On November 22, 2006, the Holy Synod of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate) declared that it was impossible for itself to participate in such events [4]. The ensemble of St. Sophia Cathedral includes the monastic buildings of the 18th century included with it in the UNESCO list: the bell tower, the southern entrance tower, the refectory, the bread house, the bursa, the Metropolitan's house and the Zaborovsky gate.

(Translated by Google) One of the oldest cathedrals in the world! The preservation of the cathedral is very good, in the middle of the cathedral, on the side of the altar part, restoration work is underway, clean and very large, the staff are extremely nice people, when visiting the cathedral I learned a lot from the history of Kievan Rus, I was very shocked, I will definitely come back again!

(Translated by Google) When we said we are students, they made a discount of half the price. The cathedral is beautiful from the inside as well as from the outside. The historical paintings on the walls are fascinating. There are also areas inside that have been turned into a museum.

Adorable place, full of quite atmosphere and greens. You will feel peaceful there, just in the middle of noisy center. Inside, you could visit old church and also step upstairs - to have a look at old city from the high. The fee entrance is not high. Sometimes - some events are organized inside, but also outside.
