A little confused by some of these reviews we visited yesterday and all there was were the walls and tower (Β£2 entry) there was no actual castle to go in? Anyway the view from the castle walls is lovely but even better from the top of the tower, the tower however is not available for anyone who isnt confident on their feet as the spiral staircase is uneven. We spent about 30 minutes on site all together

Another nice castle from the 11th century. For me it was the highlight of the trip when travelling around the UK, back in 2001, to see all these old castles and fortifications everywhere in diffrent designs and sizes. Many still in good condition and maintained, both small once and other massive.

You have to visit with guided tour. I couldn’t book online as it was full but luckily the guide said i could join if someone doesn’t come and so I was able to join. The tour takes around one hour and the history of the castle as well as the weapons inside the castle was explained.

Loved our experience. Been to quite a few better preserved castles before, but this visit was the most enjoyed. The props on display could actually be handled. The staff here were very pleasant. They seemed very passionate and were very well versed with the history of the castle - part of why we enjoyed the experience so much. A special thanks to Gary, who took the time to talk us through weaponry, carpentry and stonework today.

Its a beautiful castle that's seen some rough time. I can't wait to go back once it has been restored and refurbed in a way. The volunteers there are doing a great job. Keep an eye open on the english heritage website to find out about the opening days and ticket fares (if any).

Chester walls are amazing. They are in such good nick and well looked after. Everything is within and the city itself has all the most important aspects scattered around them. Impossible not to compare to London where there is practically nothing left of the original Roman settlement. The city evidently takes this historic footnote seriously and so it should. Cannot wait to revisit and tread around the city perimeter again.

They had a really nice early era styled display today, with musket firing and information about traditions at the time. All people were very friendly and informative.

What a nice place to visit, the volunteer was great, he explained to us the history and showed us in the main tower. Kids loved it

Nice little thing to see if you are having a walk around Chester, unfortunately we couldn't get close up, so could only admire from afar which is a shame, especially if you have young kids that might want to explore

the wall is a great opportunity for a nice walk around the city. minuses: not pram/wheelchair friendly, some parts are in repair.Chester is a nice town, and a fun place to visit if you want to walk the walls. The castle itself is OK. Nothing special.A little confused by some of these reviews we visited yesterday and all there was were the walls and tower (Β£2 entry) there was no actual castle to go in? Anyway the view from the castle walls is lovely but even better from the top of the tower,

You can see where the original castle was and mostly its only the Tower left. However, it only costs Β£2 to get into the Tower and its worth a look with a good view of the city. The castle was closed when we visited, but we were able to get some nice exterior photos from our vantage, walking the old wall.

A lovely and historically interesting if small castle, worth taking a look at and going up into the tower, staff exceptionally welcoming, helpful, and informative

The 12th-century Agricola Tower was the first stone gateway to Chester Castle, which had been founded by William the Conqueror in 1070 in the south-west part of the city. On the first floor is the chapel of St Mary de Castro, which contains some exceptionally fine wall paintings from about 1240. By climbing the nearby stairs to the wall-walk, you can appreciate the castle's position within the city.
