Beautiful Vegan Cafe with good purpose. You can donate your used clothes and belongings and buy the second hands to support refugees and donation.

Great little cafe and shop that supports Myanmar refugees, and provides hospitality training for some of them too! All food is plant based (and there are quite a few gluten free options too). I had the Khao Soi, which was lovely! A nice variety of places to sit, inside and out, and a very chilled out playlist!

Great dishes w/GF options! Well decorated, hip music, fountain makes for peaceful dining. Inside and outside dining very comfortable. Inside also perfect for digital nomads. I am GF diet and found it easy to pick great dishes for myself, the flavor was vibrant. Some parking available but limited. Small thrift shop with nice clothes and bio-products; samples smell great. Give your order at the cashier, they give you a number and you find a seat. They will bring everything to you. Make sure they took your order correctly. Water available for free inside.

Lovely place. Peaceful with all the plants and chimes. Conscious place that offer more than a place to sit and have a coffee or a meal. They think fair and sustainable. I stayed there a while just to enjoy the calm, laying down on one of their mattress by the low tables outside. I ate their rainbow pad thai. Unfortunately, I had yesterday an amazing one. This one was not at the level so I wouldn’t recommend it. Maybe their other meals are better. For example, I had a roti, a flat piece of bread. This was absolutely delicious.

Not Thai flavor. The taste is super mild (probably for foreigners). I wouldn’t recognize Pad Thai at all if I didn’t know it is lol. Juice is great. Smoothie bowl …I don’t enjoy the taste it’s so mild.I enjoy Khunkae more. All the food has quality ingredients tho. Quite pricey.

Great and cozy atmosphere, but if you are after a yummy northern Thai food, better look for some other place. For my taste the food was ok, but don't order Khao Soi if you don't want to get a western variation of it, which you usually have in your home country. Way too pricey.

I was really excited when I found this place - the menu has a lot of healthy, vegan, and gluten-free options. And they have a great mission I can get behind and was willing to pay their high prices for. However, I had an unfortunate encounter with the owner. I ordered the GF pancake, which was quite bland and dry, and when I told the owner, rather than try to solve my issue by offering me some toppings, she became quite defensive of the dish. The conversation was very unpleasant and ruined my experience here. I then looked at the reviews on Google and it’s clear that every time someone leaves feedback the owner replies quite defensively. It’s a shame, she could turn the feedback into improvements, but seems she is stuck in her ways.

I’ve been here three times now - twice was brilliant but the last time was disappointing. They do great smoothie bowls for 250 THB. I like these for the fresh fruit toppings. Last time, my smoothie was not very cold and was a little too thick. I’d still recommend though.

This place has a really casual but lovely feel, and the food is wonderful. I had the homemade lemonade which was refreshing, the rainbow pad thai, and the mushroom gyoza which was my favourite. Very reasonable prices and all profits for a great cause. There is a guess boom on each table. I loved the entry in the pic that I have posted

Truly amazing menu filled with variety and creativity. Hard core vegans and conscious livers will be delighted. Expats and those used to Thai prices may not be so thrilled. I enjoyed my meal. Played YouTube version of Free Bird while I waited. Groovy.

Wow! Truly heaven for a vegan. The food was delicious. I had the Khao Soi and it was amazing! The ambiance of the place is also great. They have many vegan products for sale as well as a secondhand shop. I recommend entirely! Edit: I have since tried other foods: -Vegan Tofu Scramble: delicious, I recommend if you want a lighter but nutritious breakfast.

Cute little cafe that offers good selection of food and drinks! Food is fresh and authentic, Shan noodles is a bit bland but there are sauces that you can use, coffee is strong and aromatic, highly recommend the popchick (I think that’s the name). Good food, great cause - can’t beat that!

Wonderful restaurant with many choice of hot food on the menu. Every dish tasted AMAZING!! The Minty chocolate and samosas are my favourite so far. Food with such quality and price are not expensive at all. Also love the laid back atmosphere which allowed us to have a relaxing lunch. Can’t love this place more.

Our absolute favorite vegan cafe in Chiang Mai! Amazing menu with breakfast options, appetizers, soups, salads, sandwiches, smoothies, fresh juices, bowls, and entrees. They also sell beer and cocktails. You order and pay at the entrance, and the food usually comes out quickly. They have comfortable indoor and outdoor seating areas, and WiFi is available. We have never been disappointed and always take our friends to this restaurant when they are visiting! They also have a great little store with vegan food options, organic foods, and even bulk soaps and cleaning supplies, personal items, etc. There is also a thrift store attached, and they will accept donations of clothing or other items. We will keep going back and keep supporting this business!

Nice place! And from what I understood, the proceeds go to a charity helping refugees? There’s also a cute second hand store and a zero waste, eco friendly shop right next to the cafe. I bought a pair of reusable cutlery for 100 baht which is a good price. Nice fruit shake too.

I love everything about this place. Amazing food and relaxing atmosphere! When I'm there to eat, I give myself extra time to browse the zero waste store and secondhand store. There's always something new and fun to buy to support this social enterprise for Burmese refugees. Check out their page on Facebook. They often have great workshops and events happening at their space!

I loved Free Bird cafe; it’s the first place I headed to when I got to Chiang mai. The all vegan menu is massive with tons of choices, including classic Thai dishes. The place itself is also a donation and thrift shop with tons of stuff. They also sell some vegan products, cruelty free stuff, bamboo straws, etc. Plus they are supporting refugees and women and educating the community about these issues and more.

There's a weekly Wednesday women’s lunch, held in the air-conditioned side dining room. I enjoyed a hibiscus ginger soda, a bowl of khao soi (delicious) and a piece of deep-fried banana (great!). They also sell some grocery items, ethical chocolate and frozen takeaway foods, and they operate a used-clothing shop.

Free Bird is a thrift shop/ second hand shop, cafe and a zero waste shop: 'My Best Life' all in one. Relaxing place to lie down on the tri fold cushions in the front near the pond. Buy Bulk foods. Reuse items. Reduce plastic at my best life. Buy clothes and other household items at Free Bird. If you like to reduce your waste or buy second hand you will love this cute little shop. A must visit when you are in the area.

Really nice vegan meals, some western food in the mix, I specially love the umami lemongrass soup accompanied by a roti! I haven’t tried that many dishes because many have peanuts (which I don’t like) and I found a couple of things I want to have basically every time. Staff is nice and room is cozy. Be patient if something gets lost in translation. Portions might be a tad small if you’re a hungry bird like me.

Awesome vegan restaurant with a big heart! The food is delicious, my favorite is the green tea fried rice! Lots of toys for your kids to play with while you eat too! On top of the great and extensive menu, they have a no waste, non toxic station selling cleaning products so that you can maintain a healthy and safe environment at home😁 Cant recommended this place enough! Oh! The super food smoothie bowls are on point as well! Too much good great stuff to list!

Such a wonderful place and wonderful people running it. Not only an amazing plant-baded cafe, pre-loved store and zero waste health store but also a place for community coming together and sharing experiences and joyful moments. And the best is that all profit goes to Thai freedom house, a place helping Burmese refugees with education, food and a safe place. Thank you for all the work you do!

This place is a total gem! Great food, friendly staff, cozy decor, and it's all for a good cause. The quality of the ingredients are higher than most places because the owner is passionate about only putting good things in the food. You can really taste the difference! The best part of it all is that 100% of the restaurant's proceeds fund various programs supporting refugees. Thank you Lisa and the team for this amazing place, it's a home away from home for us in Chiang Mai.

Cool vegan cafe with outside seating and indoors. Random second hand clothing store attached. The smoothie bowl is delicious! I had the lemon cheesecake version. It has nice outdoors seating shaded in the morning and wifi. The staff are super friendly and the menu is very creative. There aren’t many non-sweet breakfast items which is a downside.

My favorite latte in the world! I will come back for the Almond Milk Lavender Latte for the rest of my life!! The Khao Soi is so delicious and I am obsessed with the sesame tots for dessert. The new vegan Mac and cheese is so unique!! Nothing else like it...in all of Thailand. I also purchased so great jewelry, hats, bags and shirts from the see one hand shop. There’s also home goods like cups, plates and decor when you’ve just moved in. When my mom visited me in Chiang Mai this was a must-go stop and she loved the Shan Noodle Soup. The events here are so much fun and in the winter I became obsessed with the Hot Cacao drink. Mmmm. So chocolatey!

I heard about the Free Bird Cafe from Culture Trip but I had no idea what to expect upon arrival. When I stepped through the gate, I was already in awe by the adorable patio decor and water fountain. The inside was even better with their gently used thrift store and all natural products. Finally, the menu was extremely extensive and I couldn't decide what to get so I got a mix of everything such as Lavendar Latte, Rainbow Pad Thai, Soaked Oats in coconut milk, Potato Hash, Scrambled Set and iced coffee. My faves were the Lavendar Latte, Soaked Oats and Rainbow Pad Thai. I PROMISE that you will not be disappointed here, everything is so tasty!

Comfortable vegan friendly dishes in a chill atmosphere. Local favorites done vegan, which is nice since northern Thai cuisine is high on pork. We had the green tea salad, Burmese noodles, and curry with black rice. Delicious! We also had an almond milk chocolate and coconut milk latte.

My first meal in ChiangMai! The vegetarian meal was fresh, colorful, tasty and nutritious! I love the ambiance of the place too. Decoration is young, trendy, and creative. Food price is at high side comparing to other local restaurants. Some of the vegetables is too hard to chew.

  • 5/5 Mercedes J. 4 years ago on Google
Delicious organic vegan fare. Proceeds fund a school for Burmese refugees, so I'm happy to pay the premium prices. There are other vegan restaurants where the food is just as good but the profit goes into someone's pocket, so at least this is a good cause. I have a sensitive stomach to oil and sugar and nothing I've eaten here has thrown off my digestion, so that's a good sign. They have amazing salads if you want super-healthy, and they also have vegan versions of your favorite comfort food. The broccoli-"cheddar cheeze" bites (nooch-pumpkin plant based) are out of this world, and even though they're deep-fried I didn't feel uncomfortable after eating them. Win!

A small vegan place , cozy vibe , AC was provide but wasn't turned on all the time even warm sunny afternoon but only 2 tables and not too hot so only fan on seems reasonable . Bernese salad was mild flavor , very nice vegan brownies. A bit too pricy in my opinion . Love the idea of healthy goods in their small vegan shop .

Zero Waste store is pretty cool. Coconut gelato was excruciatingly sweet and impossible to eat. Watermelon shake was okay. They could have just given watermelon juice without the frills of coconut blossom syrup and a ton of ice. I did ask for that but they said cannot. Oh well.

FreeBird Cafe is a MUST visit in Chiang Mai! It’s just outside the Old City and has the cutest dining areas. You can’t go wrong with anything on the menu. My personal faves are the Mac N Cheese (all vegan, plant based, and not made from fake cheeses that are bad for you) and the Stuffed French Toast. I can’t pick a single smoothie bowl that’s my favorite, I just love them all! FreeBird Cafe also has a Zero Waste store (where I refill all my hygiene products), as well as an awesome second hand clothing shop! As a traveler on a budget, you can find the cutest pieces that another traveller probably couldn’t fit in their suitcase! 😂 On a final note, the owner, Lisa is absolutely inspirational and pours her heart out into keeping this business running as 100% of their proceeds go to Burma refugees 💕

I've been a patron of Free Bird Cafe since 2011. I've seen them through several locations, an expanding menu, and the addition of their zero-waste store. The atmosphere is bright, colorful, clean, and relaxing. The food is beautiful, vivacious, and delicious. The cause is notable and necessary, and the owner is a powerhouse with a heart of gold. I highly recommend you do not leave Chiang Mai without visiting Free Bird. It's also home to weekly nomad luncheons, open mic sessions, and other events where you can connect with others while keeping your finger on the pulse of issues affecting northern Thailand and migrant communities. Free Bird Cafe singlehandedly makes the best cacao smoothie bowls I've ever had anywhere. They are absolutely to die for. I highly recommend the samosas, khao soi, and tea leaf salad as well. And don't forget the butterfly pea iced tea!

Free Bird is the kind of place that makes you say "THIS is why I love Chiang Mai." What a vibe! Come for the delicious food (you have to try the Burmese Tea Leaf Salad and vegan Khao Soi) and stay for the eco-friendly shopping and community events. It's the rare and beautiful kind of lunch spot where you always end up making friends with the table next to you while getting to support incredibly hard working local causes. And they need and deserve the support more than ever. Go go go!

A bit on the pricy side, but i do like their waste free program. Had their cocomocha and blue butterfly tea (Or something like that, don't remember the exact name 😂); tealeaves salad and their pumpkin ginger curry. Two drinks were good, not too impressed with the salad, the curry was good though. They also have second hand clothing shop on the back, go take a look, you might find something that fits you 😜.

My favorite place in the world!!! Vegan, organic, gluten free (options), homemade with love... And the best part is knowing that your money is going to helping people that are often overlooked and left without any decent opportunities (just because of their ethnicity). The owner of Freebird provides Burmese refugees with jobs, education, practical skills, and anything else they may need to set them up with a better life. And you get to be a part of that by eating DELICIOUS, HEALTHY FOOD... What's better than that?? My go-to meals are the cacao smoothie bowl, the gluten free pancake, the chickpea tofu salad with riceberry, and the chickpea curry with riceberry... Yummmmmm. Everything tastes so much fresher and cleaner than the other food options around! Also, all of the drinks on the menu are AMAZING... Muddy mint matcha, chai, sacred cacao... Delicious! and made with homemade plant based milks. There's also a zero waste shop attached to the cafe, and a second hand shop!! Anyway... GO TO FREEBIRD CAFE... You won't regret it :)

Free Bird Cafe is such a gem in Chiang Mai. What an amazing organization where 100% of the profits help refugees on the border of Thailand and Myanmar. Love that they have the first refill/ no waste shop in Chiang Mai, which is the best way to help the environment. The quality of the products in the no waste store is incredible. Food is great and love the pre-loved shop. Such a nice way to get something "new," without buying fast fashion and supporting an amazing cause. Highly recommend going again and again!

There are so many elements of goodness to Free Bird Cafe, but let me get you hooked by saying that you food, is... I'm drooling just thinking about them delicious little broccoli cheese bites. Or omg, the chocolate and coconut indulgent sundae. That is like nothing else I've ever tasted before. there's juices, and teas, and a dirty chai, that's right, it's next level. The menu has literally, everything you could want, whatever your feels, your fancy, whatever you mouth wants to frolic on, it's right there. Made with fine ingredients, made with love. I'm telling you, you eat it, you stuff yourself, and you still coming out feeling good. Cos its that good, and get this - 1 0 0 % of the profits go to helping people. When I found this out, I got food to takeaway. A few of these tasty chocolate energy balls, for the times I need a little pick me up.

This is must visit restaurant in Chiang Mai. Free Bird serves lovingly prepared and delicious vegan food. The best part is that it is also a social enterprise that uses the profits to educate migrants and refugees from Burma. The staff are from Shan State in Burma and by supporting them you are supporting the livelihoods and education of hundreds of migrants. Your body and mind will feel vibrant and healthy, and your conscience will get a big boost from your experience here. Oh and try the tea leaf salad... it is life-changing! I can't say enough good things about Free Bird Cafe, their owner, their wonderful staff and their humanitarian vision. It is incredible to have such a healthy and unique culinary experience while also helping a great cause. Go eat and be the change!

Best cafe I have found in Chiang Mai! It’s all vegan, profits go to help Myanmar refugees and there’s an amazing gift and second hand shop there too. I had the cacao smoothie bowl and it was well worth the price, beautifully presented and absolutely huge I could hardly finish it. The atmosphere is lovely and calm, with a comfortable outside area with floor cushions too. Wish I had found this place sooner. Thank you!
