Being a professional entomologist specialising in southeast Asian bugs, I couldn't visit Chiang Mai without checking the place everyone had asked me about. So here we go. This Thai couple dedicated their life studying insects and it shows. The exhibit takes place in their house and displays tens of thousands of specimens of insects, other arthropods and small vertebrates collected or purchased from all over the world over decades. The sheer numbers are impressive for a private collection. But. It appears the place was frozen in time a decade ago. Lots of specimens are in bad state, few have collection data, there's very little information, everything is mixed up, even mixing orders, families, continents. If you're a professional, you'll get upset. If you're an amateur, you won't learn a thing. If you just want to show bugs to your kids, it may work to impress them with giant insects and lots of diversity. While I have a lot of respect for the tens of thousands of hours of work to build the collection, I just can't get over the fact that this is a capharnaüm of specimens and such a missed opportunity to educate people by displaying correct information and sorting specimens according to taxonomy and countries.

Bit difficult to figure out how to get in, but if you just click the buzzer to the left of the big gate, a lovely lady will come out and let you in. Admission is 200 Baht, so be prepared with the money. There's a very wide array of different insects to view, and it's a good little archive of the animal kingdom all within this small space. Worth a trip if you want to learn about Thailands smaller animal kingdom. ✌️

A very large collection of insects but you can also see there, shells, stones and fossils. You can feel a love for nature and the aim to pass a message of respect for nature (of which we are only a part of) which is nice. The high entrance price (500 baht for a family) could perhaps in this way be justified so this collection can continue to be looked after. However such a large collection could really benefit from a larger space, better lighting and overall a much more organized structure. Please also note that the museum may seem closed but that ringing on the door is required. Photos are allowed but no video and that there is no climatisation.

Great little museum. Lots lots lots to see. Amazing how much they fit in here. Mostly bugs and insects. Interesting to see and lots of information provided in English. Also a good bit of history. We would recommend a visit. Worth the money and we would go again.

A very important museum that nobody should miss when visiting Chiang Mai! The artifacts are magnificent and the paintings are wonderful. At the end I was gifted with a beautiful souvenir

Very kool place. No air conditioning but free fans to borrow. Easy enough to enter despite other reviewer’s complaints. Read the story of the vulture egg while you are there. Great displays of insects, fossils, wood growths. Much reverence paid to mosquitos. A bit pricey but worth it. Would have stayed and read everything offered but my gf got a little too hot. Overall very interesting & neat experience

So much beauty and wonder in one place! I really enjoyed my visit and I learned so much. You can genuinely feel the love and appreciation for nature while you walk through. It is very warm, but they turn on a few fans. Take some cold water with you! It takes about an hour to walk through and we took our time to read everything and awe at the marvelous collection of creatures. A wonderful museum and worth the visit!

The museum looked closed when we arrived, as there was a closed gate. We rang the doorbell, and the proprietor came out to let us in. It's a fairly eclectic two-story former home, packed with insects, a few fossils, and some very nice woodwork.

This is in a house, but the collection is awesome. Collections of bugs, stones, geodes, petrified wood and bones, and paintings by Dr Rampa. Dr Rampa is an amazing individual. It's a little pricey for Thailand compared to the wats, but it's a unique experience. Worth it.

About 3.5 stars It’s really complicated because right when you get to the building there is no door. After reading the reviews about the place, you need to ring a door bell which is fine. I was expecting a whole lot more since we paid about 6 dollars per person for a museum but it was quite limited and underwhelming. I’m addition, some of the specimen were not taken care of properly . BEWARE there is no air circulation, no AC, be prepared to sweat. ( sweat so much that you want to leave early😭) Overall it was interesting to see insects, fossils, and more. I probably would not go again but it’s nice to see the first time.

This is a Thai National Treasure. I was enchanted by my 2-hour visit, and I love insects even more than before. The product of a married pair of emminent mosquito researchers, this private collection in their home is both a record of their lives and work, but also their collection of insects and small creatures from Thailand and around the world. Upstairs is a traditional presentation of a shocking array of similar-species insects pinned inside glass cases in several aisles. You can see them very close-up, with descriptions for most. I was enthralled. If I had seen just one of those insects in the wild, I would have lost my mind. There are thousands!! Downstairs is a mix of outreach presentations regarding mosquito-borne diseases, stories of their lives and work, and some insect dioramas, and art. Messages about their holistic spiritual beliefs about nature pepper the upper walls. The host - their daughter - answered the gate bell quickly and was very welcoming. Many electric fans kept me cool during my 2-hour visit. But really this collection and modest business is too much for one person to keep going every day. You should visit now, and support a most unique and valuable national treasure.

SUCH a cool place. Please go here if you're near Chiang Mai. There's lots of information about insects and other creatures, with a focus on mosquitos and malaria especially. They have so many neat specimen and nik-naks. It was ฿200 for adults, cheaper for kids. Ring the doorbell on the left so they can let you in.

Large collection of Insects, bugs and Natural gemstones for you to feast your eyes on. Unfortunately you cannot photograph the whole top floor as it is prohibited, which is a real shame as I am an illustrator and wanted to use the photographs to paint from. One part of the bottom floor is also prohibited, I accidentally took a photo and the woman made me delete it. I'm giving it the stars because of the high ticket cost and photography prohobition. If I could take more photos, I'd be happy to pay 200 baht per adult and 100 baht per child. No wheelchair accessible whatsoever. There are steps leading to the entrance and steps within the building. Also no seats at all once inside.

So cool to see the passion of someone's life! An eclectic, entertainingly curated collection of creepy crawlies of all shapes and sizes. Learn more about the much-maligned mosquito, see giant paper sculpted wasp nests and a collection of rocks and oddities collected more from the heart than the head. No air conditioning, so time your visit. It does smell (understandably) of paradichlorobenzine. I loved it - so happy I got a chance to visit this little gem of a private collection. And don't worry - nothing is moving here!

Very detailed and unique experience. Much like the insect museum is located in America, but a little more thorough in my opinion. It was very cool to see the story behind the museum and what started it. I also learned more than I ever knew about mosquitoes and saw the oldest petrified wood I’ve ever seen!!

(Translated by Google) Chiang Mai is a very powerful private toll collection museum, because the son is an insect fan, especially to take him to see. A collection of 56 years of specimens collected by two doctors' husband and wife files in Chiang Mai. The two scholars are doing research on "mosquito" and "malaria". Their story is very exciting. The man encountered World War II at the age of 9 and fled to Chiang Rai, where he was infected with malaria. Death), he was sick for a long time, was taken to the local witch doctor treatment (said that the medical needle constantly stabbed his anus for 2 months) he miraculously survived, when he was young, he did not know what he had at the time. It is a malaria with a very high mortality rate. When I grew up, I learned that I should have malaria at the time, I felt miraculous for myself to survive, and I was committed to research on mosquito diseases and malaria! Mrs. is a very powerful mosquito doctor Technician who collects and installs mosquito specimens for the US Combat Mission (USOM) malaria control program. Because it is a museum that scholars have made, the first floor is very hard to explain on mosquito sampling research and malaria introduction. The second floor is an amazing number of insect specimens (there are too many categories to look at) We stayed for two hours and still had no idea what to do. Have the opportunity to go back to Chiang Mai and want to see it again!

This museum may not be interesting for everyone, especially kids, but I ended up spending much longer than I thought here. They have an unbelievable number of specimens, especially beetles and butterflies. I really started to enjoy the museum once I read the stories of the two founders and understood their passion.

If you can't find the beauty in insect then maybe you can in the various collections from fossils, nest, nature items, and art. Take a minute to appreciate a single mans' collection and see the beauty from his eyes. Worth the stop and not expensive.

There was a lot of convenient information, about diseases caused by mosquitoes, about insect plagues. There was art work and there were poems, all very inspiring. Not everything was focused on insects, there was some art focused on the abuse of elephants, there were some bats and birds, the second floor had a lot of rocks and shells. There is a lot to read, I would spend at least an hour there. Maybe kids can't concentrate for too long but there are a lot of insects to see so it would still be fun for them. There is a little gift shop, I bought a little bag to keep my money in. The place felt authentic and exclusive and I walked oit with another view on insects and the world. Visitors are not allowed to take pictures on the second floor.

Wonderful place of interesting items mostly insects as the 2 husband & wife, were high level biological scientists who collected thousands of bugs mostly mosquitoes, leading to improvement in mosquito control worldwide getting many awards through the years. Now the parents are gone, & the wonderful daughter faithfully opens the museum with restricted hours due to after effects of Coronavirus. One of the essential places to visit in Thailand. A wonderful collection of insects, rocks, and other fauna. It felt like a cabinet of curiosity, and you got to learn about the creator of the collection–a biologist specializing in mosquitos–and learn about why it started. To note, you need to go to the gate with the mosquito metal design (it's pretty cool) and then hit the buzzer to let the people know that you are there and want to see the collection. I am unsure of the hours but it didn't look open from the outside. If you have this problem then use the buzzer.

I think I agree with someone else's 3.5 star as being the most accurate. Really lovely museum to visit and obviously a work of passion by the couple who owns it. It's displayed over two levels of their home and there is a vast array of mosquitos, butterflies, moths, beetles, and other insects. There is also a more modest but nonetheless impressive collection of fossils, shells, and crystals. While there is a lot of information about mosquitos, as this is one of the owner's specialties, there is less so about the rest of the collection. I wish they would spend some time and add more information about the different species on display so that you would be able to learn some things as well as just looking. I think the price is fair at 200B, as I understand it they were offered $4 million for the entire collection some years ago. No doubt this would be more in 2022. So paying 200B to see over $4 million dollars worth of insects doesn't seem like much. It would probably be nice if there was a family discount but as I was alone this didn't bother me. I think if you have kids and are limited on time, then perhaps better to check out the insect zoo as there will be live insects and more interactive activities there for you. Also one small note about the gift shop - there isn't much in the way of insects. You can buy some gem beetle wings here for the lowest price I've seen so far in Thailand. But apart from that, it's nothing special. Being run by insect collectors, I would have loved to see some dried butterflies and insects for sale or some books about insects to further educate myself.

So many bugs! This is a really cool private museum. It has an extensive collection of bugs of the world, all collected ethically, and many precious stones, wood carvings, fancy driftwood and a display of the curators life work in mosquito borne diseases. Great place to burn some time

Not worth the visit or the ticket price. It' a small museum in a private home. No air-conditioning inside and it's very worm, humid and uncomfortable to walk inside. We had to ring the bell so someone would open and let us in. Also it's little dim and all the display are chaotic and you can't see what is inside them. Even if you walk by the museum accidently don't go in. It's a scam.

This place is a passion project from scientists that have dedicated their lives to the study and conservation of insects and all of nature. Great place to visit, even with my 4 year old who loved looking at the incredible amount of different insects and objects in there. We spent about 45 minutes but I would have personally spent at least 45 more just to read every single piece of history they have on there. Very interesting! Bravo.

Ignore the people who couldn’t even get past the gate! Ring the bell and a lovely lady shows you in and then you can browse at your leisure. It’s a small museum and one of the best I’ve ever been too with a heat warming backstory from the founder. The lower floor is mainly dedicated to mosquitoes as that was the founders job though there are also incredible preserved giant bees nests, termite moulds and more insect homes. Upstairs was really stunning. A gigantic collection of hundreds and hundreds of insects laid out neatly and professionally. Beautiful crystals, shells and even ancient dinosaur eggs! There was a very personal feeling to this museum as his art work and stories were everywhere. Worth 200 baht.

While i appreciate the work of everyone involved in gathering all the insects here, the place is too crammed, too expensive and it does store some insects illegally since there are threatened and nearly-extinct insects there. The lady who ''welcomed'' me in was panicked when I took a picture of such an insect and demanded I delete the pictures. Very dodgy, wouldn't! No step-free access, no elevator etc, just lots of stairs.

👍👍 Today we went to all the temple's in Chiang Mai. In one word just beautiful but you've to see them for your self. The best one was for sure Wat Chedi Luang. Only at this you've to pay 40 bath entry fee when most of them are free. Still worth it though. In some of temple's women are not allowed to go...
