Price: 50 Baht. One of the main temples of the city. Once, was the tallest building of the kingdom, but the upper part of the pagoda fallen with an earthquake. Still, the structure is impressive, specially the elephant in the second floor of the structure. In this place you can also see the pillar of the city, is near the entrance, it’s a important place, one of the biggest festival is about this structure. You can also see a copy of the Emerald Buddha (here was the original place of the icon until was moved to Luang Prabang and Bangkok)

My favourite temple to visit in Chiang Mai. Chill vibe. Not as busy and commercial as the other temples. Really huge ground to spend some quiet moment walking and sitting around. Very beautiful 600 years old temple. Entrance fees 50 baht is well worth it.

One of the biggest temple complex located at the heart of Old City, Chiang Mai. At the center lies the remains of centuries old ancient temple building surrounded by many newly built structures. This is a very touristy place so not much serene like other Chiang Mai temples. But worth a visit.

The main temple hall was under renovation while we were there. Which was a shame as we have been told that the main hall is the highlight of this temple. However, we still enjoy this temple overall. Nice to see ancient ruined that reminiscent of ancient Northern empire that used to rule in this part of Thailand. Similar to other temple in the city, there are multiple smaller temple hall that you could go wondering around and learn about the meaning and teaching that each temple has to offer. Note that it does get very hot and humid during the day, so best try to plan to avoid this.

If you stay in Old City, I recommend you to go for a walk in the evening and feel a different charm from the daytime. It's like a gift that we meet by chance. When you meet a magnificent old tower, you will be amazed without realizing it. It's also good to go around the huge tower and enjoy the various Buddha statues around you.

Went there in the evening. While the sanctum sanctotum was closed, i could still roam around. A surreal experience with scenic lighting on the dome. Against the moon background, it was a spectacular visual treat. Though right next to a main road, it was still very silent across the campus. The lying pose of Buddha in the dim light and silence is a visual i could carry as a souvenir. The place has good number of parking lots, very neat campus with clean toilets. It's also near to good hotels and cafe's. A great temple for a serene and divine feeling within walking distance from city.

So far my favorite place in Chiang Mai. In the heart of the city and you can spend a couple of hours slowly enjoying each and every little corner of this complex. The main building is right now under renovation, but it doesn't make it less spectacular somehow. Stupa, trees, shrines, there is a bit of everything and everything feels very mystical

Peaceful temple with amazing centuries old architecture. Main hall was closed for renovations but still plenty to see. I did not have to pay entrance fee and did not see the ticket booth as other mentioned. Monks are around if you want to drop by and ask about Buddhism, meditation or culture. Great place to visit.

Beautiful and intricate temple in the centre of Chiang Mai's old town. The design and the creativity is quite unique and detailed. Good place to take pictures or sit around a bit to escape the heat

An indescribable experience! I had found it on the list of attractions ....and was intrigued. But it is one of those things - you can never really experience it until you have been there physically. The grandness of this monument is simply stunning and left me utterly speechless. And I must mention these absolutely grand and mammoth trees that left me awestruck. They were one of the most beautiful things I have seen.

One of the top Temples to visit in Chiang Mai. Very impressive collection of buildings within the grounds together with the 15th Century Chedi. One building also houses a number of Golden Buddhas including a reclining Buddha. Plenty to see here, the Grand Hall is unfortunately closed due to restoration work.

Iconic ancient temple, construction started in the 14th century, when King Saen Muang Ma planned to bury the ashes of his father there. After 10 years of building time it was left unfinished, later to be continued after the death of the king by his widow, it was finally finished by the mid 15th Century. If you love ancient architecture definitely one to visit and probably makes every recommend sites to see list for Chaing Mai. Remember to be respectful as the site is still being used as a place of worship and you will see Buddhist monks going about their usual business.

Beautiful temple area. You'll get some lovely photos and there are lots of shady areas under the trees on a hot day. You cannot fail to be impressed here. Some parts of the complex do not allow Women in. There is a small entry charge and you can hire trousers and tops if you forget to dress appropriately. Well worth a visit

Very nice temple to visit. 700 + years worth of history. Many buildings have interesting architecture if you are interested in them. I visit in April thus very hot as there is not much tree shade.

Very solemn place and I appreciated it because it was not very crowded. I was able to enjoy the place. Unfortunately a lot of the temples are under renovation. But I’m sure once the construction is done, the place will be more majestic. There’s a clean toilet which is very rare in a very touristic place.

Beautiful temple, very chill vibes all around the site. Not to crowded. They encourage you to talk to the monks at the “monk chat” area which is a great way to learn about their culture.

I was mapped to the side gate that was closed. Had to take a detour to the main gate. the place was huge. the architecture was nice. however some of things may take awhile to understand, we were lucky as there was a tour guide who was explaining to his tourists in front of us and got some idea what the item was about. As mentioned a few times in this review, one of the buildings was only for male.

Stunning temple worth visiting. Didn’t spend much time here other than to quickly admire it. Other beautiful temples, monuments, and HUGE trees around the grounds. 50 baht per person. There are tuktuk drivers around the area to easily get a ride to the next stop.

Beautiful temple with a small entrance fee for kids and adults. Free for 2 years old below. easily accessible by grab or tuk tuk at the old town. The smaller temple near the ticket counter is where women are not allowed. The main building when we came was under maintenance. There is large gong where my kids were so excited about. You can see some parts of the temple were ruined. We got a better picture behind the temple where most of the elephant structures were still intact. Nice garden around it and you can see monks walking around.

Visited for the last evening of Loy Krathong and happened to walk in just as the night time light projection show started on the temple, and what an unexpected treat! Truly a beautiful way to celebrate the festival with a vivid display of lanterns, water, Buddha and mandalas. Only 50 baht entry for tourists which is worth the walk around the complex alone. Fun to see the young monks letting loose and having fun with bangers and sparklers 🧨🏮🕉

Beautiful temple complex of many kinds. With a small entrance of 50 baht we enjoyed a tour of many different types of temples. The most spectacular for me was the ancient one. Totally worth a visit.

Because of the epidemic, there are very few tourists, and now there is no need for tickets. The ancient city walls are spectacular, with some Cambodian style. Worth a visit! Recommend!

Now is the time to go. The tourists are gone and it's back to being a peaceful temple/chedi. Some construction on the temple currently.

A 14th century temple. It has the largest Buddhist chedi built featuring 98 meters tall and 54 meters in diameter. Simply amazing!

an iconic temple with a huge chedi at the top of the tiered foundation, together with the large square around, it was a magnificent landmark in the past; too bad it was ruined in an earthquake. the huge wihan at the front is so grand, and the tall ceiling is decorated with beautiful northern Lanna style ornaments. today the wihan is still being used as a preaching hall for monks; audience is allowed at about 17.30h. at the back of the chedi, there are some Lanna styled chapels, one of it houses a small golden reclining Buddha too. this is a MUST-GO destination in Chiangmai.

A nice change in the style of Thai temples. Not as bright, gold or boisterous as the ones in the major cities but definitely has its own charm. It's really quiet and serene here, with little smaller temples dotted around. An understated, but extremely beautiful temple. If you love elephants, you'll love it here! There's literally elephant motifs everywhere. Note: Visited prior to COVID, so things may be slightly different.

What a beautiful place! I was lucky enough to get here during the festival. Live music, celebration, praying, food in the street. Everything is amazing, and new for something coming from a different continent. Everyone is nice and respectful, and it’s a universe of culture and events of interest. Thanks for the great moment!!

Very beautiful template and ruins! The entrance is 40bhats which is fair enough. I really like to see such beauty in the middle of old city. The elephants going off the ruins walls are stunning. I also liked the fact that this temple holds Monk chats every morning. There is a monk university which allows monks to practice English while talking to tourists and it allows people (without gender distinction) to sit with them and ask whatever one wants to know about their life, their choice, religions, beliefs, etc. I shyly approached them thinking I’d be there for some minutes and ended up talking to them for +2hrs. So interesting to hear from their experiences and their philosophy of life, very enriching! Highly recommended! There is also a meditation center at the template where they do meditation every Sunday, if interested in that.

It's the main city temple with old temple from the ancient time.. so good , if you're in chiang Mai shouldn't miss out this place. Its so relaxing and when you see the temple with your own eyes , you will feel the vibes around.

While Chiang Mai is the city of Temples (and the U-Turn), this temple is iconic due to its location in the old city and the number of self-esteem taken here. On a serious note, it is iconic Buddhist temple well worth the visit. The main assembly temple is currently being renovated with no access, still a magical place to see.

An historical and breathing taking temple, I would recommend visitng during the evening / night to enjoy more quiet time. The place is beautifully maintained and the ambience of the tall trees and nature giving you serenity.

Ancient temple built in 15th century. It emphasizes the historical buddhist architecture. It is located in the central area of the old city in Chiang Mai. Visited the place during new year and buddhist monks were chanting sermons. Lights were lit beautifully around and on the steps of ancient chedi surrounding the Lord Buddha. It is a sacred place where most thai people visit for spiritual upliftment. Nearby is a museum which describes the buddhist civilization. The temple is a historical monument in Chiang Mai. The route towards the temple is very easy to find on google maps. Entrance is free and no charge for foreigners. Must pay attention to not to wear revealing clothes as it is a buddhist temple. Felt so peaceful sitting looking at the chedi and chanting sermons. A must visit place if you ever being to Chiang Mai.

this is one of the temples in Chiang Mai and it is so beautiful. It's more of a an old kind of temple but you can see that it's has been there for so many years. I like the style as it is very ancient

Admission fee is 50 bahts. An important historical spot in Chiangmai, but the main temple was having maintenance and didn’t allow tourists going in to visit.

Wat Chedi Luang is the famous temple in town of Chiangmai, is a Buddhist temple in the historic centre of Chiangmai. On the temple grounds is the city pillar (Lak Mueang) of Chiang Mai, named Sao Inthakin. It was moved to this location in 1800 by King Chao Kawila, that was originally located in Wat Sadeu Muang. He also planted three dipterocarp tree there, which are supposed to assist the city pillar to protect the town. A festival in honor of the city pillar is held every year in May and lasts 6–8 days for merit with the flowers. In a wihan near the entrance to the temple is the Buddha statue named Phra Chao Attarot (Eighteen-cubit Buddha), which was cast in the late 14th century. On the other side of the chedi is another pavilion housing a reclining Buddha statue. Wat Chedi Luang hosts monk chats every day and tourists are invited to speak with monks and ask them anything about Buddhism or Thailand.

Beautiful temple, 50 baht cost, make sure you are dressed accordingly as they do check. Old temple very nice to see, washrooms on site. 3btraveler

Visited in the evening and got to see Wat Chedi Luang with the sun setting in the sky, which made for a memorable view. There is a huge night market around Wat Chedi. If you are there already have a walk around. The goods are pretty standard but there’s plenty of local foods to try out if you are so inclined.

The construction of the temple started in the 14th century. While in 1545, some part of the temple collapsed after an earthquake. It’s my favorite temple in Chiang Mai and I think it should be the most beautiful one. It costs me 50 baht to enter but really well worth it. It’s an attractive site to wander around. I actually spent 2 hours here.

The main temple was under construction during my visit in October 2023. Pros 1. Free parking but on the road side 2. Entry ticket is about 40-50 THB 3. The temple complex is big 4. The older temple is similar to those in Ayutthaya. It might be as high as a 10 story building. 5. There is a man only temple. The temple is quite intricate with details. 6. Clean toilets 7. Located inside the old city in Chiang Mai. Considerations 1. Please wear full length clothes 2. Might visit in the evening to avoid the Sun. Also have dinner at any nearby restaurant, there are several.
