I had this place to myself, a combination of being a weekday and fine sunny weather outside. If you're interested in the history of the Lanna Kingdom who's Capital City was Chiang Mai, then this is the place to learn about it. Additionally you can learn about all the different "Art Styles" that have influenced the design of Buddha images and architecture styles through the Centuries. There is also a section here on Prehistoric finds in the area. There are three very good, informative videos with English play option you can watch, one on the ground floor and two others on the 2nd floor. It's 100Bht foreigner entrance fee, easily worth it. Note that opening times are Wednesday to Sunday from 9.00am to 4.00pm.

Visiting this museum was a good choice as it added context to many of the sites you see in Chiang Mai. It gives a chronological tour of history with exhibits - some are multimedia sound and visuals - from early stone tool humans in the area to present day. I was surprised to learn how long humans have been in this area and the two archaeology dig pits in the exhibition give a sense of what they have found from around the same time period as the Java man found in Indonesia. Interesting was a gallery highlighting changes through time of shapes and styles of Buddhist sculptures. The shape of the face, body, and head changed with different eras and dominant kingdoms at the time in what is now Thailand. A very good walk through of the production methods used hundreds of years ago for a massive bronze Buddha head used baked clay made of hay, dung, earth, and wax to create the mold, and when the hot bronze was poured into the cast, the wax melted away, creating a gap to remove the clay and be left with the bronze sculpture. Not crowded, it was a good stop to better understand the history of modern Thailand.

This is a museum that focuses on the history of the Lanna Kingdom. Also explores the log coffin culture and shared Asian heritage. -only open on Wednesdays to Sundays (9 AM-4 PM.) -closed from Monday to Tuesday and holidays. -only allowed to bring the phone, they will ask you to put the bags in the locker -not allowed to take a video

Plenty to see here, and take in! From caveman to Buddhism, the story of Lanna Kingdom and Chiang Mai is told here, as with most museums, there is too much to digest all at once I was particularly struck by the similarities between European early man, and Asian early man, both using very similar stone tools etc, and the history of the Lanna kings backed up by a video was worth seeing. And loads of Buddhist artifacts some of the votive tablets are really tiny 100 baht admission, definitely not overcrowded, and cool on a warm day

A very interesting museum. I came with one other person and it had us questioning a lot about religion, culture and a lot of different things we hadn't thought much about. Ancient inscribings, pottery, statues, everything I came to see was very awe inspiring. I'm not much of a museum person myself, but this was a great place to start off with in Thailand. Definitely worth a look around.

Pleasantly surprised! Spacious, well arranged, ventilated, well lit, great exhibits providing information in Thai and (decent) English regarding the history of the Northern (Lanna) Region, the arrival and spread of Buddhism into the different parts of Thailand, and more. Personally, as it was my first visit, I was very impressed by some of the displays, and the English translations - while containing some errors, was reasonably well done. Thoroughly enjoyed my time there, depending on how you enjoy your museum visits, this one could range any where between 1-3 or even 4 hours. As I was visiting with elders, I was also very impressed at the availability of an elevator (there are 2 levels), and I noticed ramps with handrails connecting some of the display areas that were set apart from the main areas. Highly recommended for people who are interested on learning about the North. 😊👍

It is unfortunate that there weren't more visitord to this main museum of north Thailand. We had the place all to ourselves, literally examining the artefacts on display. The buddhism ceremony items on display were intricate and impressive, not behind glass panels. Made for very nice photos!

My visit was December 2016. There was renovation work going on at the time. I found it to be very interesting as I wondered around reading the information and looking at all the items on display. Some videos to watch also. Free entry which is always a winner. Any bags etc you put into a locker.

One of the best museums of its type I have visited in Thailand. The collection of Buddha images from 8th to 19th centuries is particularly wonderful. The English language exhibit labeling is impressively well done, and very helpful for non-Thai speakers.

Museum covers 3 main topics: Buddhism, archaeological findings in Northern Thailand, and history of the Lanna Kingdom. The narrative can be improved as significant portions of it require some (local?) background knowledge to make sense of. There was a lack of a linear timeline, with some related articles describing events taking place in separate times. The amount of English writing was sufficient to occupy a visitor for about 2 hours rounded up. Overall not too shabby for a small museum, but the articles could be polished to make them easier and more interesting to read.

Wonderful museum with English signage on displays and also narrations from the engaging audio visual presentations. It deserves much more visitors than its getting now but the upshot is a tranquil and unhurried visit for those in the know. Our two hours passed by in a breeze. Free lockers for your bags. Highly recommended!

Excellent local museum. Showcasing the amazing and rich history of the region from prehistoric cave paintings and stone tools, to 13-15th century kingdoms and royal marriages between the Chiang Mai ruling family and the kingdom of southern Thailand. Really well curated with informative labels in both Thai and English.

Reasonable museum with good English translations about historical artefacts found in the local area. It costs 100 baht to enter and is found over two floors. Anything larger than a purse needs to be stored. Will take most people around 30 minutes and is good for a wet day

Interesting museum in a beautiful old Western style building. The museum gives an overview of the history of Chiang Mai and information on modern and traditional lifestyle. Nice mix of movies, replica and informative texts. There are also some temporary art exhibitions. The cafe in the courtyard looks lovely.

Hello, sorry to say I had a club sandwich here and it really was not so good. The place seems nice and clean and the staff were pretty friendly and took care fairly well. But the club sandwich was just not good. It had 3 thick sliced toasted white bread. So far so good. But on the first layer of club sandwich it had a cold and what appeared to be previously cooked egg. And on the second layer of sandwich was one maybe 2 very thin sliced pieces of ham. There were 2 pieces of lettuce and 1 slice of tomato on the side more as a garnish than part of the actual sandwich and that was there club sandwich for I think i paid 125 Baht. So basically you gave me an old cold fried egg and ham sandwich with an extra piece of bread and called it a club sandwich. I think it will take a long time for me to forget this sandwich and return here. I have eaten here in the past a couple of times and the food was ok not great but certainly not bad, Today was certainly not good. Sorry for the bad review and I do hope that this will give you a chance to review the way you make your so called club sandwich and improve for the future!

I’m lucky enough to live in Chiang Mai City where there are tons of museums, aquariums and historical places like Buddhist temples, gates to explore and new exhibits to see. Still, one of my favorite things to do whenever I visit a new city is to get lost in a great museum. So, I went the Chiang Mai National Museum.🥳 Yay!!! There are so many of Buddha image of Lanna and 2 floors with 16 display rooms. They told me that Museum is a new permanent exhibition. There are 8 display rooms on the upper floor and the further 8 display rooms on the ground floor. 8 The topic of ground floor display rooms: Topic 1: Development of Buddha image of Lanna Topic 2: Phra Saenswae Topic 3: Lanna votive tablets Topic 4: Buddhism ceremonies utensils in Lanna Topic 5: Archaeological objects found in Hod District, Chiang Mai Topic 6: Lanna ceramics Topic 7: Lanna paintings Topic 8: Art in Thailand 8 The topic of ground floor display rooms: Topic 9: Buddhism Belief Topic 10: Buddhism in Lanna Kingdom Topic 11: The Relationship between Chiang Mai and the Court of Siam Topic 12: Lanna during the Rattanakosin Period Topic 13: Lanna under Burmese rule Topic 14: Lanna Kingdom Topic 15: History in Northern Thailand : Proto - History in Northern Thailand Topic 16: Prehistory in Northern Thailand All the above facts that I mentioned are imagined in the journal which will give to you when you enter the Museum. Entrance fees: 100 baht per one adult ppl In conclusion, I just wanna highly recommend to go there when you have arrived to Chiang Mai, Thailand. Best, Bryan.

Wonderful museum, very well curated, showing exhibits relating to Lanna history. The most stunning collection of Buddha statues I've ever seen in one place. Ranging in size, age & the material used to make them - many of them priceless antiques. The atmosphere in the building is quite remarkable - very peaceful & calm. You can easily spend a day at this impressive collection. The staff are extremely courteous & helpful. This is mandatory viewing for anyone visiting Chiang Mai who wants to learn about the history of the region. Highly recommended.

I liked the museum because it does a good job of explaining to a forener the lst 3 to 400 years of history in Thailand. The artifacts were mostly potery and wood. I expected to see more xrystal and gold artifacts. I thought the presentation was done well and the descriptions were a little lacking. The exhibit on ancient man Is out of date a we know more about our past now that that would challenge how we lived 10000 years ago but that is not what the museum is realy about. I would recommend seeing if you are in Chiang Mia.
